Sony PlayStation 2 No Longer Being Shipped To Japanese Retailers

ps2 goodbye Sony PlayStation 2 No Longer Being Shipped To Japanese RetailersThe PlayStation 2 is one of the legendary consoles out there, especially having sold about 150 million units since its launch in 2000. However it seems that all good things must come to an end as reports have it that the console will no longer be shipped to retailers in Japan, meaning that once stock has run out, that’s pretty much the end of it. We assume that similar practices will be taken for other retailers around the world so if you’re looking to own a piece of history (assuming you don’t already own a PS2), now might be a good time to get your hands on one. Given that the PS2 is retailing at extremely low prices, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Having been launched in Japan on the 4th of March 2000, this makes the console close to 13 years of age – pretty impressive we have to admit.

Five Year Old Kid Finds Porn On His Nintendo 3DS

nintendo 3ds Five Year Old Kid Finds Porn On His Nintendo 3DSThe problem with purchasing second hand gadgets is that you never know if its previous owner did their due diligence by making sure to delete all their data before reselling it. Some might have forgotten, some can’t be bothered, while some assume it is the duty of the reseller to do it for them. In any case according to a report on 9News, it seems that a five year old kid got more than he bargained for when he launched his Nintendo 3DS which he received as a Christmas present this year. Yup it seems that the previous owner forgot to delete their stash of porn (nine images to be exact) when he/she sold it to Gamestop, where the retailer forgot to check its contents before putting it up for sale themselves. The retailer has since apologized to the family and in return they have received a brand new porn-free Nintendo 3DS.

Wireless Charger Built Into Floating Shelf Seems Like A Great Idea

Nokia WP8 Shelf 48 Wireless Charger Built Into Floating Shelf Seems Like A Great IdeaEarlier this month we reported that a user had taken it upon himself to install a wireless charger into his table, and it looks like the concept of a home installation is catching on as brent3000 has managed to install a Nokia Wireless Charging Plate for his Lumia 920 onto a floating shelf which only cost him $13 (for the shelf, not the charger). Depending on what kind of user you are, sometimes you chuck your phone, keys and wallet onto a table when you get home. Sometimes that table isn’t necessarily where your charger might be so we can certainly see the appeal in placing your phone on a table and have it start charging immediately. (more…)

Jonathan Kim: ReThink Review: Les Misérables — In Your Face!

The long-awaited film adaptation of Les Misérables had a huge Christmas opening, raking in over $30 million since Christmas day and generating a considerable amount of Oscar buzz. One aspect of the film that has created a lot of curiosity is the fact that the singing by the film’s actors (which includes Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe) was recorded live as the film was shot instead of the more traditional method of recording the vocals in a studio, then having the actors lip-synch it on camera.

With only a few exceptions, the lip-synching aspect of movie musicals has always annoyed me, so I had high hopes for this new technique, which involved the actors wearing tiny wireless earpieces so they could sing along with a piano player performing the music beyond earshot of filming. However, it seems that filming and recording singing this way resulted in a shooting style that made me feel like I was being attacked by giants trying to deafen me. Watch my ReThink Review of Les Misérables below (transcript following).

LG wants the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 terminated, says it breaches viewing angle patents

LG wants the Samsung Galaxy Note 101 terminated, says it breaches viewing angle patents

When Samsung came swinging with allegations of OLED patent infringements and corporate theft, LG promptly counter-sued. Samsung then escalated by broadening its list of patent complaints, forcing LG to do what any dignified electronics brawler would have to do: file for a retaliatory injunction against the “sale, manufacture and importation” of one of Sammy’s products. The device at stake today is the unsuspecting Galaxy Note 10.1, which has no direct rival among LG’s current product range but which is claimed to have breached three LG display patents concerning the improvement of viewing angles. For its part, Samsung is dismissing the attack as “unjustified” and doesn’t seem overly concerned by LG’s demand for damages — nothing less than a billion won ($1 million) for each day the Note 10.1 continues to be made and sold.

Kindle Fire HD is Amazon’s star product for holiday sales

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD was the retail giant’s best-selling product over the holiday season, with the Android-based ereader-tablet also the most gifted and most-wished-for item on the virtual shelves. The company still refuses to give specific sales figures, but says that the Kindle Fire HD has held the top spot in all three categories since it landed fifteen weeks ago.

In fact, Kindle is an Amazon success story all round, not just the more direct iPad-rivaling models. In addition to the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire, the Kindle Paperwhite and regular Kindle ereaders together hold the top four positions in the Amazon worldwide sales charts.

That hardware has seen digital content demand jump too. Amazon says it saw its biggest day for digital downloads ever on December 25, as over 23m movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, audiobooks, apps, and games, were downloaded on Christmas day. That’s not solely to Kindle devices, of course, since Amazon also offers the Appstore for general Android devices, and streaming media to other platforms.

Kindle Fire HD sales were already buoyant. Amazon had announced back in October that the tablet was the best-selling product across all the countries it operates in.

Apple Might Have To Pay To Use “iPhone” Name In Brazil

Apple Might Have To Pay To Use iPhone Name In BrazilA little over a week ago we reported that a Brazilian company by the name of Gradiente had released a smartphone called the iPhone Neo One. It is by all accounts a rather outdated Android handset running on Gingerbread, but given that the company seems to have registered the trademark to the iPhone name way before Apple did, on the surface it would seem that they are within their legal rights to call their phone the iPhone if they wish.

As we mentioned in our previous report, this seemed like an excuse for Apple to take notice and possibly work out some settlement agreement and according to reports, Gradiente is most definitely willing to make a deal with Apple if they wish to license the iPhone name from them. Gradiente has warned that they are willing to “adopt all the measures used by companies around the world to preserve its intellectual property rights”. At the moment Apple has yet to make an official comment on the matter, but hopefully this will be resolved quickly and peacefully.

Netflix Spotted For Blackberry 10

netflix bb10 Netflix Spotted For Blackberry 10One of the reasons people choose the mobile operating systems that they do involves many factors, such as hardware of the phone running the operating system, features, user-friendliness, number of apps and etc. Well if you were thinking about picking up Blackberry 10 in 2013, you might be interested to learn that it looks like Netflix could be making its way onto RIM’s upcoming mobile operating system. This is thanks to @BlackberryScoop who posted a couple of screenshots of what appears to be Netflix running on Blackberry 10. Word has it that RIM is trying to get Netflix onto Blackberry 10 and @BlackberryScoop is said to be helping to test the beta. At the moment he claims that the beta is still rather buggy and drains more battery than necessary, but hopefully RIM will be able to sort this out in time for Blackberry 10’s launch on the 30th of January 2013.

Windows Phone Users Petition Google For Native Apps

BhWXrUpEetQKUmq 556x313 noPad Windows Phone Users Petition Google For Native AppsIt seems that while Google is eager at releasing apps for their competitor like Apple’s iOS platform, they seem to be taking a different stance with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. As you might recall, Google announced that they had no plans to build native apps for the Windows Phone platform which meant that Windows Phone users would be left without some relatively essential apps – e.g. Google+, Gmail, and etc. Apart from a rather basic search app designed for the Windows Phone platform, it is unclear as to whether Google will be changing their stance on the matter in the near future, but that hasn’t stopped Windows Phone owners from launching a petition in which they hope will get Google’s attention. If you’re a Windows Phone user, or even if you’re an Android or iOS user who thinks that Google should make apps for Windows Phone, head on over to Change.org and sign the petition and hopefully Google will do something about it in the near future.

LG Display hunts Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 sales ban in Korea

Apple isn’t the only company to bear a grudge against Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1: LG Display has filed an injunction for a ban on the stylus-equipped tablet in Korea, as well as nearly $1m in damages for every day Samsung keeps it on sale. The latest phase of an ongoing patent dispute between LG Display and Samsung Display, Dow Jones reports, the suit alleges that the screen used in the Note 10.1 infringes its technologies in the way it boosts viewing angles.

“Through this action, LG Display seeks to completely stop the sale, manufacture, and importation of [the] infringing Samsung product” the company said in a statement on the injunction, which was filed in Korea on Wednesday this week. If Samsung continues to sell the Note 10.1, LG Display says it will seek damages in the region of 1 billion won ($934,000) per day of “continued non-compliance.”

LG Display’s patents at the heart of the argument center on technology used to improve screen visibility at broad viewing angles. Samsung has paired an LCD panel with a Wacom digitizer, allowing the Note 10.1′s digital pen to be used for accurate sketching, handwriting, and other uses.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung is defiant in the face of LG Display’s allegations. The suggestions of patent infringement are “unjustified claims” the division’s vice president, Shim Jaeboo, said in a statement, promising that Samsung would respond to the suit.

Earlier this month, Samsung filed a suit against LG Display in which it was claimed that its rival infringed seven LCD patents.
