Audiogalaxy music app will shut down services entirely January 31st as its team joins Dropbox

When music streaming app Audiogalaxy announced its acquisition by Dropbox earlier this month and closed signups we feared the worst, and now it’s been confirmed: the service is shutting down entirely on January 31st, 2013. It had previously announced subscribers would have access to their mixes until the end of this month, but after another month they’ll have to move to a service like Google Play Music, or possibly self hosting with Subsonic or something similar. The original blog post mentioned a desire to bring “great new experiences” to Dropbox’s 100 million plus users so we may see some of those features again, soon. As for the service itself, Founder Michael Merhej relaunched it just over two years ago after version 1.0 — a web-based music file sharing service that eclipsed its competitors during its run from 1998 to 2002 — was squeezed out by RIAA pressure, so we figure anything is possible in the future.

Department of Justice opens investigation of the HP and Autonomy acquisition

HP acquired Autonomy for $11.1 billion, only to take an $8.8 billion writedown due to alleged fraud on Autonomy’s part. HP states that Autonomy is guilty of “serious accounting improprieties,” and that it fraudulently inflated its apparent worth to make HP bid accordingly. Now the U.S. Department of Justice has gotten involved, opening an investigation in the matter.

The issue picked up speed fast, with HP getting slapped by a lawsuit via its shareholders. Both the auditing firms – Deloitte and KPMG – were listed as defendants for failing to notice red flags hinting at Autonomy’s skewed accounting. Also listed was HP’s executives, officers, and board of directors for negligence and breach of duty.

Rumors that Autonomy was up to no good were circling before HP acquired the company, and according to inside sources, HP wanted out of the deal. The company failed to find any evidence of fraud on Autonomy’s part, however, giving it no legitimate excuse to back out. HP is said to have been aware of the allegations about Autonomy’s “creative accounting” methods.

As for the DOJ investigation, HP both confirmed it and stated that it would fully cooperate. Meanwhile, Autonomy’s founder Mike Lynch has created a website where he counters HP’s claims, stating that HP has failed to substantiate its allegations, among other things. Lynch has also stated that Autonomy would cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation.

‘Once Upon A Time’ Season 2: Extended Preview Teases Confrontations And Reunions In January Return (VIDEO)

With a little over a week to go until “Once Upon a Time’s” return (Sun., Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. EST), ABC has released an extended preview trailer for the fantasy drama’s upcoming episodes — and it looks like there’s plenty of action ahead.

The midseason finale saw Emma and Mary Margaret finally return from Fairytale Land, but unbeknownst to our heroes, the villainous Hook and Cora also managed to cross over to our world — and they’re both looking for revenge.

Not only does the new promo highlight long-overdue confrontations between Rumple and Hook, and Regina and Cora, it also teases that the curse keeping our fairytale characters trapped in Storybrooke is about to be broken — but how? We’ll have to tune in on Jan. 6 to find out, but in the meantime, watch the video for a hint of what’s ahead in the second half of the season.

White House Petition Calls For David Gregory To Be Charged Over Gun Magazine Use

A petition on the White House website is calling for David Gregory to be charged for his use of a gun magazine on last Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”

It seems that a White House petition is now de rigueur for any media controversy; twin petitions about Piers Morgan (to eject him from and keep him in the United States, respectively) accompanied his anti-gun comments on CNN. Now, over 11,000 people have demanded that Gregory face the consequences of his potentially illegal wielding of the empty magazine during an interview with the head of the NRA.

“David Gregory is not above the law; he is a journalist, and must be held accountable to the same law as every other person,” the petition reads in part. It has not reached the 25,000 signatures necessary for the White House to respond.

ZTE to show off Grand S, world’s thinnest phablet, at CES

ZTE has announced that it will unveil its ultra-thin 5-inch phablet, the Grand S, at CES 2013, the upcoming mega tech event. The Grand S is only 6.9mm thick, making it the thinnest phablet to (eventually) hit the market. This comes shortly after it announced its other high-end phablet, the Nubia Z5, a sleek device that is unlike the Chinese company’s typically lower-end devices.

ZTE is going all-out when it comes to phablets, it seems, pumping out two high-end, ultra-thin handsets back-to-back. The Nubia Z5 got to hold the title of thinnest phablet for a full day before details about the Grand S were announced. Not many images are available, but those that have surface over at Weibo show a thin phone with a light rounded back and dark face.

As far as specs go, they’re as impressive as the Nubia Z5′s. The display measures in at 5-inches with a full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. Around back, there’s a 13-megapixel camera, and presumably there’s a front camera as well, although that is unconfirmed. Inside you’ll find a Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. The only difference between the Grand S’s specs and the Nubia Z5′s is the battery – the Grand S has a lower capacity battery at 2500mAh.

The other difference is in price: the Nubia Z5 is priced at about $550USD, while the Grand S, if rumors are true, will cost about $450USD. This will put the handset at a lower price point than its competition. That’s all we know until CES rolls around, which we’ll be covering, so stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated as new details surface.

Darren Collison Buzzer Beater: Mavericks Guard Sends Game Into Overtime, But OKC Wins (VIDEO)

It’s unlikely Rick Carlisle drew it up this way. But it’s also unlikely he cares.

With Carlisle’s Mavericks trailing the Thunder, 98-95, with 2.2 seconds remaining, Dallas’ Shawn Marion tried getting the inbound pass to Vince Carter on the wing. But the ball was deflected. Marion pounced on the ball, quickly took one dribble and then passed it to Darren Collison, who was standing beyond the 3-point line.

Without time running out, Collison jumped as he caught the ball and threw up a wild shot in mid-air.

Orange County Register Owner Eyes Tribune Papers

SANTA ANA, Calif. — The publisher of the Orange County Register said Thursday that at an investor group he leads may want to buy Tribune Co.’s newspapers after the media conglomerate emerges from bankruptcy.

“We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we’re looking for,” said Aaron Kushner, chief executive of 2100 Trust LLC, which bought Freedom Communications Inc. and its flagship paper, the Register, in July.

Jimmy Savile Told Margaret Thatcher About His ‘Girl Patients’

LONDON — Classified documents being made public Friday detail how now-disgraced BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile was comfortable at the heart of the British government during his heyday in the 1980s, lunching with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at her country home, sending her jokey thank-you notes and lobbying for tax breaks and contributions for his charitable works.

The papers include an unnerving handwritten note from Savile to Thatcher in which he claims that his “girl patients” are pretending to be jealous because of the time he spent dining with the prime minister.

New Year’s Eve 2012: The 15 TV Characters We’d Party With On December 31

New Year’s Eve is almost upon us, which means parties, fireworks and the dilemma of who to kiss at midnight.

Primetime boasts a whole host of memorable characters — both those we love and those we love to hate — but while we’re happy to spend an hour with them every week, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’d want to invite them into our homes for a party.

With that in mind, HuffPost TV has rounded up 15 TV characters who we think would liven up any New Year’s Eve celebration — whether they can work a little magic, like Rumplestiltskin or Barney Stinson, or regale us with tales about their adventures in space or parallel universes, like Walter Bishop or a certain Time Lord. Check out our list below and hit the comments to tell us which fictional characters you’d like to spend New Year’s Eve with — and which you think would be total party poopers.

Magnetically lifted graphite moves by laser, may lead to light-based maglev vehicles (video)

Magnetically lifted graphite can move by laser, might lead to lightguided maglev vehicles

Magnetic levitation is central to the fastest trains we know today, but it’s that dependence on electromagnets and rails that limits how and where it’s used for transportation. Aoyama Gakuin University has a unique alternative: changing the material properties themselves. By floating graphite over a bed of circular magnets, taking advantage of its tendency to generate an opposing magnetic field, researchers can move the graphite just by blasting its edge with a laser. The heat skews the magnetic behavior of that area enough to unbalance the graphite, either in a specific direction or a spin. The research team believes it could lead to maglev transportation or even energy converting turbines that are steered solely by light, with no contact or outside guides: maglev vehicle pilots could have much more control over where they go. Getting to that point will require a much larger scale, but successful development could give technology a very literal lift.
