Westinghouse 110-inch 4K TV to ship alongside 65, 55 and 50-inch models in Q1

Westinghouse 110inch 4K TV to ship in Q1 alongside 65, 55 and 50inch models

Westinghouse has yet to become the premium HDTV manufacturer it one day hopes to be, and if the past is any indication, flooding the market with low-cost sets won’t drive you to the top. But the promise of high resolution might at least yield a modest bump. The company’s 2013 lineup is set to be dominated by 4K models, each packing 3840 x 2160-pixel panels for an “amazing” and “affordable” experience. The company’s flagship rings in at a massive 110 diagonal inches and will be available for custom order beginning sometime in Q1. 50, 55 and 65-inch versions will also ship within the same timeframe, offering the same resolution and a modest 120Hz native refresh rate. We’re still waiting to hear back on pricing and a hint of where you might be able to pick one of these UHDTVs up beginning early next year, but if the press release after the break is any indication, we’re about to be inundated with high-res, low-cost televisions at next month’s CES.

The Basement Collection, Cave Story+ added to Humble Indie Bundle 7

The Humble Indie Bundle 7 has been available for a week now, so that must mean it’s time for new games. Sure enough, a trio of indie gems has joined the already stellar Humble Bundle, bringing the total number of games on offer up to nine. The offer doesn’t just stop at games though, as Indie Game: The Movie and nine different soundtracks are also included in the bundle.

HumbleBundle7

To get all of that loot, however, you’ll need to pay more than the average. Since the average currently sits at $6.45, we imagine that won’t be too difficult for most gamers. That’s especially true when you see the games that were just added to the bundle: The Basement Collection by Binding of Isaac developer Edmund McMillen, Offspring Fling, and Cave Story+. Cave Story+ has been featured in Humble Indie Bundles of the past, so veterans should be quite familiar with this game by now.

The Basement Collection is actually a bundle itself, bringing together a number of indie games made by Edmund McMillen. When you remember that Dungeon Defenders and Legend of Grimrock are both also beat-the-average bonuses, then you have every reason to shell out a little more cash. How can you possibly resist when so much great indie gaming is unlocked when you pay more than average?

Unlike the last Humble Bundle we saw, all of the games in this bundle are compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. With six days left to go, the amount the Humble Indie Bundle 7 has raised is closing in on $2 million, so it’s possible it could break $4 million by the time everything is said and done. Regardless of what happens in these remaining six days, we doubt it’ll manage to top the Humble THQ Bundle, which pulled in more than $5 million by the end of its run.

Pew Research and NPD suggest tablets replacing e-readers and traditional print

According to NPD analyst Stephen Baker, it’s “the beginning of the end” for traditional e-readers, and according to Pew Research’s most recent findings, it’s full-color tablets that are replacing the segment – with traditional print dying out as well. According to Pew’s newest survey, 23% of Americans ages 16 and older say they’ve read a real e-book over the past 12 months, this number jumping 16% compared to last year. This number becomes especially significant given their finding that number of people (16 and up) that read a printed book in the same amount of time fell 5% year-over-year.

ibooks-580x378

Only 67% of the respondents questioned in this most recent survey by Pew said they’d read a real book (paper, print, that is) in the past 12 months. Take the number of Americans 16 and older that own a tablet, according to Pew, and you’ll see a possible reason why paper books are getting less popular: 25% – one in four! This number rose a whopping 10% from the same period of time surveyed in 2011.

Pew also showed that the number of respondents who said they owned an e-book reader (aka an e-reader, of course), rose from 10% to 19% this year compared to last. This tells us that though e-readers aren’t gaining popularity as well as the full tablet, they’re still on the up-and-up. Perhaps Stephen Baker is wrong?

“We are still in the early stages of the transition. It’s a big deal for the publishing industry, in the same way that the transition to digital news was a big deal for the newspaper business in the late ’90, and the same way Napster was a big deal to the music industry in the early 2000s.” – Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet Project

NPD also reports that they’ve estimated 33 million tablet computers have been sold “through November 2012″. NPD’s Baker assures the world that devices with displays smaller than 8 inches seem well suited to reading. But you be the judge: what do you think is about to happen over the next few years with e-reading in general? Will any one media be cut out entirely?

Pew’s survey is based on 2,252 Americans age 16 and older from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10 in 2012 in this case, just so you’re aware. They’ve also come to the conclusion that those that have a college degree, lived in a household with more than $75,000 in earnings, and were aged from 30 to 49 were most likely to have read an e-book. Sound about right to you?

Mercedes-Benz unleashes 2014 CLA-class promotional shots early

Mercedes-Benz fanatics are in for a treat, as the company has apparently released new shots of its upcoming 2014 CLA-class sedan. We’re pretty sure these shots – which were originally posted on AutoMonthly – are official shots from Mercedes, and at least they look the part, showing off the exterior and interior of the car with a professional flare you won’t often find outside the realm of promotional images.

CLA2

The look of the CLA might be a little jarring for longtime Mercedes owners, as the company is taking some leaps of faith with the louder design. The new car has a lot in common with the A-class series, and its risky design can be attributed to Mercedes’ desire to net some younger customers for itself. Gernot Bracht explained the shake up in design to Car and Driver, saying that the 2014 CLA is “Definitely not a typical Mercedes-Benz.”

CLA3

“The CLA is clearly informed by Asian tastes, and it symbolizes yet another departure from the traditionally purist German approach to design,” Bracht said. “But this is becoming a trend, and in a way the CLA reminds me of Opel’s approach with the new Adam.” Will this new design rub those longtime fans of Mercedes-Benz the wrong way? Perhaps it’s too early to tell, but we could definitely see this kind of car getting younger drivers interested.

CLA4

We’ll have to wait until next month to find out more about the 2014 CLA, but for now, we have these shots to gawk at. Expect the the 2014 CLA to get a lot of attention as Mercedes-Benz reveals more about it, given that the car signals something of a departure for the famous car company. What do you think of the 2014 CLA’s design?

Hyundai concept uses smartphone NFC to lock and unlock vehicle

This week the folks at Hyundai have previewed a concept vehicle system in which you’ll be able to use your smartphone to unlock your vehicle with a physical tap. This system uses NFC tags to make the connection between your smartphone and your vehicle, taking away the need for you to use a key at all, whatsoever. This system is called “Connectivity Concept” quite simply at the moment and is being previewed at the moment only at the manufacturer’s European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany – but we’re expecting more up close and personal looks here in the USA soon.

fariafaaaaaaa

This concept is being shown on the manufacturer’s New Generation i30, using Near Field Communication to make the connection. Your smartphone makes the vehicle unlock its doors and is then placed in a center console in the vehicle for further use. Once you’re connected within, you’ve got a 7-inch touchscreen to work with up front on the dash where you’re able to access music, phone contacts, radio, and phone settings.

This system also works with wireless charging, this we must assume being compatible with all of the new devices that are working with said technology including the Nokia Lumia 920 and friends, the HTC DROID DNA (and Butterfly), and the LG Nexus 4. Of course it’s no guarantee, and the device they’re using in the demonstration thus far is none of these, but we can dream!

Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Hyundai Motor Europe, noted the following about the system as it stands today:

“Hyundai’s Connectivity Concept showcases the brand’s philosophy of making tomorrow’s technology accessible to a wide range of customers. With this technology, Hyundai is able to harness the all-in-one functionality of existing smartphone technology and integrating it into everyday driving in a seamless fashion. As the technology continually develops there will be capabilities to store driver’s seating positions and exterior mirror settings, providing customers with a comfortable and individual driving environment.” – Rushforth

This system works with MirrorLink technology for wireless connectivity and also makes it known that Hyundai is working in a joint development agreement with Broadcom Corporation to make this all possible. We’ll be seeing more of this action soon!

Christmas Day 2012 Becomes Record-Breaking For Tablet, Smartphone Activations

Christmas Day 2012 iOS Android Christmas Day 2012 Becomes Record Breaking For Tablet, Smartphone ActivationsIt shouldn’t be a surprise by now that mobile devices, including tablets, have been seen as the perfect gift to give to family, friends and loved ones during the holiday season. Every year, there’s an increase in iOS and Android devices activated on Christmas Day, but this year broke records as there were more iOS and Android devices activated in history.

A report published by analytics firm Flurry took iOS and Android device activations from December 1st to the 20th and compared that data to activations of those devices on Christmas Day. Between December 1st and December 20th, four million iOS and Android devices were activated a day. On December 25th, a whopping 17.4 million devices were activated, which is a 332% increase. The previous record was set last year at 6.8 million activations, which was easily doubled this year.

Tablets also seems to have been the gift of choice this year as 51% of iOS and Android activations were tablets with the other 49% giving smartphones for Christmas. It’s good to know the tablet my grandmother received this Christmas Day has influenced Flurry’s statistics, even though she’s currently only using the thing to play Slotomania.

American Experience “Silicon Valley” special hitting PBS in 2013

On the 19th of February, 2013, a new entry into the always-excellent documentary series AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will take on the information age: Silicon Valley. This made-for-tv documentary entry into the series will take on rural Santa Clara County’s transformation into the “hub of ingenuity” of the modern age, also known as Silicon Valley by the whole entire planet. This film will begin back and the beginning: the creation of Fairchild Semiconductor and the rise to prominence of none other than Robert Noyce.

valley

This movie will show how Fairchild Semiconductor made the integrated circuit which pushed the United States forward as the top superpower in both space exploration and personal computers – and the revolution therein. Back in 1957 is when this documentary begins, and straight forward through one of the most powerful of those directly influenced by Noyce, Steve Jobs, and the mobile age it will go.

This documentary follows Noyce and the “Traitorous Eight” who founded Fairchild Semiconductor: Gordon Moore, Sheldon Roberts, Eugene Kleiner, Victor Grinich, Julius Blank, Jean Hoerni and Jay Last. This documentary is directed by Randall MacLowry and will be making its first appearance on television in February 2013 (on the 19th, as mentioned previously). You’ll find that October 4th, 1957, will be much more significant in your mind from your first viewing forward.

“On October 4, 1957, the young founders of the newly minted start-up heard some startling news: the Soviet Union had just launched the first artificial satellite into orbit around the earth. With the United States scrambling to catch up, the timing couldn’t have been better for the upstarts at Fairchild. Eisenhower quickly launched NASA and the nation’s new obsession with technology provided the opportunity of a lifetime. In less than two years, Noyce would co-create a groundbreaking invention that would help put men on the moon. But Noyce’s innovation — the integrated circuit — would have an impact far beyond the Apollo program. The integrated circuit, also known as the microchip, would re-shape the future, making possible the invention of smart phones and digital video recorders, pacemakers and microwaves possible, and launching the world into the Information Age.”

Have a peek at the trailer above and make sure you tune in when the time comes. Let us know if you plan on picking up this epic journey on your antiquated television set or if you’re going to go mobile and see how easy it is to get this documentary about the future here in the past!
