ouya developer kits shipping Ouya Begins Shipping Out Developer Kits To Kickstarter Backers

When the Ouya was introduced this summer, nobody knew it would not only be well received by the gaming community but also ended its Kickstarter campaign with over $8m in funding. Many gamers believe in the little console that could and it looks as though the Ouya is finally making its way out to customers who backed their Kickstarter campaign.

The Ouya developer kits, which were expected to be shipped out tomorrow, should be in the hands of some lucky customers some time tomorrow as a number of people have taken to Twitter and Ouya’s forums to shout from the top of the Internet mountain to announce they’ll be one of the first to receive this potentially game-changing console.

If you’re one of the lucky few to have received confirmation your Ouya is one its way, feel free to let us know what your experience is like once you receive it in the comments section below. We’d love to hear what you think of it.

Blizzard starting over with Diablo III Team Deathmatch mode

We’ve heard a number of complaints about Diablo III over the last few months, and the lack of a PvP mode seems to be one of the most common. Blizzard was touting Diablo III‘s PvP mode long before the game even released, but we’re now seven months out from launch and there’s no PvP mode to speak of. It seems like there won’t be one for some time yet either, as Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson said that the team is starting over on the game’s Team Deathmatch mode.

Diablo-3-artwork-580x325

One of the reasons Blizzard is “going back to the drawing board” with Team Deathmatch is due to the mode’s lack of depth. Wilson admits that the mode gets boring pretty quickly when there aren’t any objectives outside of hitting your opponents with the biggest weapon you can find, so the team will attempt to flesh out the mode with more features in this second attempt.

Team Deathmatch as it existed at Blizzard also wasn’t going work because of issues will class balance. A big problem is that Diablo III is a PvE game before anything else, and since Blizzard wanted to bring over as many skills, items, and abilities as it could while changing as little as possible, it put too much of a focus on class balance. While Wilson said this is okay for games like World of Warcraft, it wasn’t the kind of focus the studio wanted to put on Diablo III.

So, it sounds like Team Deathmatch won’t be arriving for quite some time. If you absolutely can’t wait for PvP in Diablo III, you’re in luck, because Wilson closes his post by saying that dueling will be going live in the game with update 1.0.7, which is due sometime early next year. Blizzard will be sharing more details on the dueling update soon, so we’ll be keeping an ear to ground for those.

Pebble smartwatch stops by FCC, tries to prove it's not vaporware

The Pebble smartwatch missed its original September target ship date. Then, it failed to ship in time to stuff stockings this holiday season. And, while we’ve seen them in person and the company claims a release is imminent, you’d be forgiven for being a bit skeptical. But there is reason to hope: the connected wristwear has officially received a thumbs up from the FCC. What’s more, the e-paper timepiece gets the full teardown treatment and comes complete with an owners manual. There’s no surprises here, but if you’re the impatient type, there should be a few things to keep you occupied until the next delay.

Instagram’s Top Location Of 2012 Is An Airport in Bangkok

instagram locations top 2012 Instagrams Top Location Of 2012 Is An Airport in Bangkok

The end of 2012 may not have been Instagram’s most successful time with a week of its terms of services drama nearly ruining the company altogether. But users of Instagram had quite the adventurous year as the company reported this year’s most popular locations, with the top spot going to an unexpected location.

According to Instagram, its most popular location on its service is Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport with over 100,000 photos taken within the last year. The second most popular location seems to be another location in Bangkok called the Siam Paragon, which is one of the biggest shopping malls in Asia and approximately 30 minutes away from the airport. The third place spot is where we finally get into the U.S. as Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California is the third most popular location on Instagram.

The rest of the list is U.S. dominated, although France’s Eiffel Tower sneaks in between Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium and Staples Center. We’re not entirely sure what that means, but we’re sure there’s some kind of conspiracy going on somewhere in there.

Here’s the full list of Instagram’s most popular locations of 2012:

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ in Bangkok, Thailand
  • Siam Paragon (สยามพารากอน) shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand
  • Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California
  • Times Square in New York City
  • AT&T Park in San Francisco
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles
  • Eiffel Tower in Paris

Dark Knight Bookshelves: When Your Kindle is in Ruin, You Have My Permission to Buy

While most of us have converted to reading digital formats instead of traditional paper books, many of us still have a collection of reading material that deserves to be preserved in physical form – like classic comics, anime or art books. So if you have just a few books that need a home, what better place to keep them than in a Batman bookshelf?

These custom-made bookshelves from Fahmi Sani of Fiction Furniture are inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series, with the sharp-edged Bat-symbol associated with those flicks. It’s the perfect thing for keeping reading materials in your Bat-cave.

And for those of you who can’t decide if you like the old or new Batman logo better, he’s got a schizophrenic version for you guys too. Though if a bat had lop-sided wings like this, it would probably only be able to fly in a circle – if it could fly at all:

Smartphone and tablet Christmas day activations break records

Christmas is always a big day for the smartphone and tablet space, but this year, Christmas was bigger than ever. That’s according to analytics firm Flurry, which tracked activation data for the first 20 days in December and then compared it to the data it received for December 25. It probably won’t come as a shock to most to hear that the data Flurry has for Christmas Day shows a huge number of activations for both tablets and smartphones.

Flurrynewdevices

According to Flurry’s data, about 4 million iOS and Android devices were activated per day between December 1 and December 20. That formed the baseline for activations in December, and it was one that the data for December 25 shattered. Activations on Christmas Day skyrocketed to 17.4 million, climbing 332% over the December 2012 baseline of 4 million and topping the previous single day record set on Christmas Day 2011, which was a mere 6.8 million activations.

Of course, with the surge in device activations also comes a surge in app downloads. The baseline for app downloads in December came in at 155 million per day, which was again determined by watching downloads over the period spanning December 1 to December 20. On Christmas day, app downloads jumped to 328 million, doubling the baseline and once again breaking records set by any previous day.

Flurrytablets

Interestingly, a surprising number of people received tablets on Christmas day. Flurry’s data shows that smartphones accounted for 80% of the activations between December 1 and 20, but on Christmas day, only 49% percent of the devices activated were smartphones. Be sure to take a few minutes to check out through Flurry’s full report, because it proves to be a very interesting read!

BlackBerry 10 slides leak video chat and screen sharing via BBM

With the final release of BlackBerry 10 coming up in a special event scheduled for the 30th of January, it’s no wonder we’re seeing a blast of interest in everything RIM – today’s leak being a set of slides showing BBM boosts and a new task manager. This set of slides shows that BlackBerry Messenger is set to be updated in a big way with both full-on video chat and screen sharing for all. Also on the docket is a fully upgraded task manager for those of you hoping to keep your tasks in order – notes and all.

This update shows the new task manager as an element entitled “BlackBerry Remember.” Here you’ll be able to sync with Outlook for email and work directly with Evernote right out of the box. This information has been shown in the slides here and now as well as in the original gold SDK provided by RIM quite recently.

With BBM you’ll soon be able to share much more intuitively, too. You’ll be able to capture a photo, tap one of your vast collection of apps to share outright – Picasa, Facebook, Flickr, and more veing shown right here in slide form, add comments, and share. You can share to one person or to your newly forge BBM Group if you wish. You’ll be able to “seamlessly” transfer between video chat and screen sharing as well – great for directions for businesses.

With BlackBerry Remember you’re going to be able to capture and keep clean all of your notes from all different directions. You can “turn ideas into action”, so say the leaked slides here, and sync with a variety of services. Microsoft Outlook is, of course, first on the list of connections, and Evernote has been tipped more than once as well.
