‘FlashArmyKnife’ App Secretly Lets You Tether Your iPhone 5 For $2

FlashArmyKnife tether iPhone5 FlashArmyKnife App Secretly Lets You Tether Your iPhone 5 For $2Let’s say you received an iPhone 5 this holiday season and have eventually realized tethering your phone to your other devices to use your cellphone’s data plan isn’t exactly what you thought it would be. Each carrier the iPhone 5 is available on offer its customers the ability to tether, but for a “low” monthly fee, of course. But a new app has been made available onto the App Store that can get you tethering in no time, as long as you know how to activate it.

The application is called FlashArmyKnife and, on its surface, is supposed to offer a number of features that any user would want in an application like a flashlight, calculator and a currency converter to name a few. But there’s one feature the developer hid from Apple that will certainly be well worth the $2 price for the application.

The process to unlock the tethering mode in FlashArmyKnife is highlighted in the video above. If you’re looking for a way to tether your iPhone 5 without jailbreaking it, this might be the way to go, that is, until Apple finds out about it and pulls FlashArmyKnife from the App Store.

Secom offers a private security drone, serves as our eyes away from the office

Modern security cameras are rather limited: if an incident doesn’t happen within a pre-defined field of vision, a company won’t know what’s happening until it’s too late. Secom is giving anxious offices a rare solution in what’s supposedly the first airborne drone for private security. Its customized Ascending Technologies quadrotor can take to the air if there’s a break-in and record what’s happening, even in areas that would normally represent blind spots. The automaton can also track moving subjects with a laser sensor and knows enough to keep its distance. Japanese firms wanting Secom’s robot sentry will have to wait until after April 2014, when they can rent one at about ¥5,000 ($58) per month; the investment could be worthwhile just to freak out a few would-be burglars.

Samsung Galaxy S IV “hands-on” takes a guess at the future

Samsung hasn’t even announced the Galaxy S IV yet, and already it’s one of the most anticipated phones of 2013. After the massive success of the Galaxy S III, we’re all interested in seeing what Samsung can do with its next flagship phone. We’ve seen leaked parts, sure, but nothing set in stone yet. That isn’t stopping the folks at Rozetked from having a bit of fun though, as they’ve put together a render showing off what the Galaxy S IV might look like and do once it finally arrives.

GalaxySIVrender

In the video below, we see a super slim smartphone that comes equipped with a 1080p Grand AMOLED display, a 13MP camera, and a quad-core processor clocked at 2GHz. The video also assumes that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie will have been released by the time Samsung begins shipping the Galaxy S IV, which we have to say would be pretty awesome. We also hear that the Galaxy S IV will be much thinner than the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5, which would be especially impressive considering the Galaxy S III is already pretty slim at just 0.33-inches thick.

One particularly cool feature we get to see is a laser keyboard dock. Our faceless host connects the Galaxy S IV to the dock and then slides his hand across the surface in front of it. The dock then projects a laser keyboard onto the desk and he begins typing away. Needless to say, we want the Galaxy S IV to come with this kind of functionality.

Of course, this is all just wishful thinking, so don’t take it to mean that Samsung is actually planning these features for the Galaxy S IV. Still, text at the end of the video tells us that this render is based on leaked parts, so what we’re seeing may not be too far outside the realm of possibility. We’ll simply have to wait and find out what kind of hardware and features the Galaxy S IV is packing when Samsung reveals it, which will hopefully be at CES 2013 in a couple of weeks. Keep it here at SlashGear for more.

Worf Hoodie: Don’t Let Klingons Catch You Wearing One

Confession: I’m wary of sharing anything related to Star Trek because I barely know anything about the franchise. It’s a franchise right? Right. But I do know that I’d rather wear a Worf hoodie instead of a Chewbacca hoodie. Notice how those two sound like they were named after dogs? Notice how I changed the subject because I didn’t have anything else to say?

Oh I know! If Worf ever needs to go under cover or keep a low profile, he can wear this hoodie so he can blend in. The hood will hide the ridges on his head. Oh wait.

I Can’t Get Enough of These Pictures Taken from Airplane Windows

I used to always pick the aisle seat whenever I flew on a plane. It’s not like I’m ridiculously tall or anything, I just enjoyed the freedom of one side (preferably my right) and the easy access to the bathroom (of which I rarely use). But on a recent trip to New York, I traded my aisle seat for a window seat. And after seeing New York from above, man, I don’t think I’ll ever sit in an aisle seat again. More »

China Introduces World’s Longest High Speed Railway

China Introduces Worlds Longest High Speed Railway

By now, you probably experienced enough travel headaches to last you another year now that both Thanksgiving and other major holidays are over. Many of you probably traveled by plane, train or automobile to get back home to spend the holidays with your loved ones, and not-so loved ones, too. Traveling to your home probably became an all-day ordeal, but if you were riding by China’s newest high-speed railway, you probably could have been there and back in the same day.

China’s high-speed railway takes travelers from Beijing, which is located in there northern part of the country, all the way down to Guangzhou in the south covering a total of 1,428 miles at 186MPH. A ticket to ride the new railway isn’t cheap as it’ll cost approximately $139 for the full trip from Beijing to Guangzhou, but the travel time has been severely cut down from 20 hours to 8 hours. And 8 hours would be perfect if you’d like to catch up on your sleep, but it’ll have to be done during the day as the line currently doesn’t offer overnight service.

If you need to travel from Beijing to Guangzhou in as little time as possible, air travel is still the best option, but for those folks who don’t want to spend more money for a flight as well as worry about more security, China’s new railway seems to be the way to go.

Bangkok Is Basically the Most Popular Location on Instagram

If you’ve ever looked at Instagram’s explore tab, then you’ve undoubtedly seen a bevy of most liked photos originating from kids in Thailand. And as it turns out, the most popular location to tag Instagram photos this year came from the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. After that it was some mall in Bangkok, followed by: Disneyland, Times Square, AT&T Park, LAX, Dodger Stadium, the Eiffel Tower, the Staples Center and the pier in Santa Monica. Kudos to you, Thailand. You’re the kings and queens of Instagram. [Instagram] More »

Microsoft isn’t worried about Google stealing its Office customers

Yesterday, we heard that Google is planning to steal away a significant amount of Microsoft Office’s consumer base. Those aspirations likely won’t come as much of a surprise, as we’ve seen Google attempting to grow its influence in the business space for a while, but apparently the big G isn’t yet at a point where Microsoft is worried. Despite the fact that Google said it’s going to try to take 90% of the Office customers who “don’t need to have the most advanced features of Office,” Microsoft’s general manager of business Julia White doesn’t view Google as much of a threat.

office_logo

According to her, Google “has not yet shown they are truly serious,” in the business space, as most of its money still comes from advertising. That much is true: The New York Times spoke to an unnamed former Google executive who said that Google Apps accounted for $1 billion of the whopping $37.9 billion Google brought in during 2011. Microsoft’s business division pulled in $24 billion in fiscal 2012, making it the company’s most successful division.

So, Google has a lot of catching up to do, but it’s starting to make some serious progress. Google charges less for Apps than Microsoft does for its premium suite of Office programs, so Google is seeing more people who want to save a bit of cash give its business solutions a spin. Though White told The New York Times that Office 365 is primed to become Microsoft’s “fastest-growing business,” she didn’t get into raw numbers.

There are perks to going for Google over Microsoft, but the Office name has long been one considered essential for business. It’s going to be hard for Google to break through that, but you can bet it’s going to try and it’s more than willing to invest heavily to pull customers away from Office. 2013 should be an interesting year in the battle for business domination, so stay tuned.

Tomb Raider To Include Multiplayer Modes? [Rumor]

Tomb Raider To Include Multiplayer Modes? [Rumor]

Ever since a new Tomb Raider game was announced, we’ve been keeping tabs on its progress every step of the way. We’ve covered its multiple retail editions, its confirmed release date and its unlikeliness of becoming a Wii U title. But one thing we absolutely didn’t see coming was the possibility of Tomb Raider including a multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer mode report is coming from All Games Beta who spotted a product listing on GAME’s website indicating a multiplayer mode is a key feature for the upcoming Tomb Raider. The feature, which has since been removed from GAME’s website for Tomb Raider’s product listing, will allow players to be able to “play a variety of multiplayer modes as Lara’s Shipmates or Yamatai’s Scavengers.”

Considering Tomb Raider looks and plays a lot like Sony’s Uncharted series, we could certainly see a similar multiplayer experience being made available in the new Tomb Raider. We just didn’t think Tomb Raider would be borrowing so much from Uncharted, although Drake’s smart remarks will always be better than Lara’s. From our years of playing Tomb Raider, we don’t believe Lara is known for her razor-sharp comebacks.
