LG announces new games for Cinema 3D Smart TVs

Several games that were (and still are) a huge hit on mobile platforms are making their way to LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs. LG announced today the arrival of several new games, including Where’s My Water, The Sims FreePlay, Air Penguin, Mini Motor Racing, and many more. LG says these games are incredible immersive an interactive, thanks to compatibility with the company’s motion-sensing Magic Remote.

LG has been working on adding more and more games to its Smart TVs since July, which was when the company first launched games on the platform, and for those who don’t have a dedicated gaming console, the selection of games that LG offers are certainly the next best thing, especially if you’re wanting to play something that the whole family will enjoy.

Selected titles have been specifically optimized for 3D on LG’s Smart TV line. Disney’s Where’s My Water and EA’s The Sims FreePlay are just a couple of the popular games you can grab. Where’s My Water became the number one downloaded game in 90 countries, and The Sims FreePlay sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

LG said that all the games will be demonstrated on LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs at CES 2013 in Las Vegas coming up in January. Each title will also be downloadable from LG SmartWorld beginning in the first quarter of next year. No word on if the games will be free or if they’ll cost a couple of dollars.

Apple CEO Tim Cook compensation falls 99% (but he’s still better off today)

Apple CEO Tim Cook will take away a “mere” $4.17m for work in 2012, down 99-percent from 2011, though thanks to some delayed share action the chief exec will actually be better off in the short-term. Cook became the best-paid CEO in 2011 thanks to a whopping $378m in compensation, though the bulk of that amount was in stock awards he will have to wait to see the benefit of; according to a new SEC filing, for 2012 Cook is actually sitting pretty after a more than 50-percent pay rise.

In fact, Cook’s salary has risen by 51-percent, to $1.36m in 2012. That’s combined with $2.8m in incentive plan compensation, though no restricted stock unit (RSU) awards in light of the huge chunk he was granted the previous year. Cook will have to wait until 2016 to see the first benefits from that – when half of the stock vests – and the remainder not expected until 2021.

On a salary-only basis, Cook’s pay-out has grown considerably in his time as CEO at Apple. In 2011, his base salary amounted to $900,000. Cook has also pushed through new stock ownership requirements for the Apple executive team: he’s now expected to own ten-times the amount of Apple stock as his base salary, while non-employee directors must own five-times the amount of Apple stock as their annual cash retainer. He and the others have five years to satisfy that requirement.

Apple’s share price has waved over the past quarter or so, having fallen to just over $508 apiece after seeing a high of $700 back in September. However, the company still met its net sales and operating income targets, unlocking a 200-percent bonus for each member of the operating team.

China debuts world’s longest high-speed rail line

China has always been about fast trains and expanding their high-speed rail lines, and today the country is now home to the world’s longest high-speed train line, spanning 1,428 miles from Beijing to Guangzhou. The train tops out at 186MPH and can conquer the 1,428-mile trip in just eight hours, replacing the previous train route which took about 20 hours to complete.

The new rail line is still technically slower than flying, but it’s cheaper and potentially less stressful than tackling the trip by air. It’s certainly far more viable than the 20-hour rail trip that it’s replacing, and the new rail line could encourage more people to go with the train rather than flying, which wasn’t really a realistic option until now.

A total of 155 different train rides will run on the new line each day, and alternative schedules have been made for weekends and peak travel times. There will still be 183 rides running daily on the old Beijing-Guangzhou line that runs parallel to the new high-speed line, which will diminish concerns that the new line would increase passengers’ travel costs.

A second-class seat on the new high-speed line costs 865 yuan ($138), while a ticket on the old rail line sells for around 430 yuan ($69). Riding the train is definitely a cheaper alternative to flying, especially if you’re not in a big hurry and don’t mind being confined to a rail car for a majority of the day.

With the opening of the new Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed line, China now has almost 5,800 miles of high-speed railway in operation. The new rail line is one of four north-south lines expected to serve as the country’s high-speed railway backbone, which also features four east-west lines. By 2015, China is planning to have around 74,000 miles of railway in operation, including 11,100 miles of high-speed railway.

This Is the Exact Date When Our Computer World Ends

The world didn’t end last Friday just like the world didn’t end in the year 2000, with failing computers deleting bank accounts and crashing airplanes. That doesn’t mean the world isn’t going to end. It will. And if we keep our current operating systems, this is the exact date when all goes poof: 15:30:08 UTC on December 4th of the Year of Our Lord 292,277,026,596. More »

LG adding more games to its Cinema 3D Smart TVs in 2013

LG

You may wince at the idea of your TV supplanting your games console, but LG’s seen enough potential in the idea to swell the number of titles available for its Cinema 3D units. It’ll add The Sims Free Play, Air Penguin and Mini Motor Racing (amongst others) that you can control with the Magic Remote. The latter has also been tweaked to offer three-dimensional gaming, and, thanks to the company’s FPR 3D tech, two players can battle each other without having to glare at a split screen. The only downside to the announcement is that we won’t see ’em arrive until the first quarter of 2013, because LG are naughty teases.

Toshiba unveils 20MP sensor for point-and-shoot camera

Since smartphone cameras are becoming just as good as most compact point-and-shoot cameras, steps must be taken in order to keep point-and-shoot cameras relevant. Toshiba thinks they have a solution and have unveiled the TCM5115CL 20MP image sensor, and it’s the highest-resolution ever built specifically for point-and-shoots.

toshiba-20mp-camera-sensor

The new sensor is a 1/2.3-inch, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor that hits a crazy 20MP, which is a big jump from the 12-16MP sensors in many point-and-shoot cameras that are available today. To combat the noise and sensitivity issues that usually come with a denser design, Toshiba is using pixels that can absorb 15% more of a charge, and therefore more light.

Toshiba has also catered the sensor for high-speed shooting and video as well, with the potential for 1080p video recording at 60FPS and 30FPS burst shooting at full resolution, provided the camera’s processor can keep up. Megapixels certainly aren’t everything, so having a powerful camera to power the sensor is just as important.

Don’t expect this new sensor to come anytime soon. Ideally, though, we should expect new cameras with the Toshiba sensor inside of them sometime in 2014, since mass production doesn’t start until August 2013. Sadly, you won’t have one of these bad boys for your summer vacation, but it’s possible that you’ll be able to grab one by the next summer.

Sonos PLAYBAR hits FCC

A new Sonos music component, the Sonos PLAYBAR, has cropped up in FCC testing, suggesting the streaming company is readying a push into TV audio. The PLAYBAR, spotted in an FCC filing, is believed to be Sonos’ first proper home theater device, likely including support for both streaming music in the same way as the current PLAY:3 and PLAY:5, and the soundtrack from your TV.

sonos_playbar_fcc_1

It’s not clear if that soundtrack will be played in stereo or some sort of virtual surround sound; the FCC filing is sparse on details, with only the label (and its rough location on the PLAYBAR itself) shown. However, the presence of WiFi 802.11n is confirmed, though since Sonos uses that for its proprietary mesh-networking system, that comes as little surprise. The fact that it is dual-band is an advancement on current Sonos components, nonetheless.

sonos_playbar_fcc_2

Sonos hasn’t been shy about its ambitions to challenge the A/V industry. The company’s CEO confirmed last year that some sort of home theater system could be on the cards, but argued that Sonos would do so in a way that challenged traditional “straightforward” options such as from Bose with greater audio quality.

The speakerbar would make a natural companion to the Sonos SUB subwoofer we reviewed recently, and the ideal centerpiece to a Sonos home theater system. Throw in a few “PLAY:1″ satellite speakers and the setup would do equally well for music as for accompanying your big-screen TV.

Game of Thrones, Project X among most pirated in 2012

It was predicted earlier in the year that the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones, was going to be the most-pirated TV show of the year, and it looks like that’s finally come true. TorrentFreak has issued their yearly list of the most pirated TV shows and movies, and Project X received the crown for the most-pirated film of 2012.

Game-of-Thrones-game-of-thrones-17629189-1280-720

Game of Thrones topped out at almost 4.3 million downloads for a single episode, and while TorrentFreak notes that TV show downloads have leveled off the past few years, they’ve seen an increase in 2012. The biggest reasons why Game of Thrones made it to the top of the list are due to various airing delays and HBO’s choice not to make the show widely available online.

Project X ended up receiving over nine million downloads through illegal means. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Dark Knight Rises rounded out the top three. Surprisingly though, a few of the more popular movies were absent from the top 10, including The Hunger Games and the latest James Bond film, Skyfall.

Some other notable TV shows and movies that made the top 10 on their respective lists include Dexter, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad, The Avengers, and Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows. Overall, a handful of HBO and CBS shows made the list, mostly due to not being available online, as previously mentioned.
