NVIDIA Shield Is About Shaping The Mobile Chip Battlefield

nvidia shield preview 01 640x426 NVIDIA Shield Is About Shaping The Mobile Chip Battlefield

NVIDIA has provided some insights about how the NVIDIA Shield portable gaming device came to be (read about our hands-on time with the Shield at CES). I recommend reading the article on their website, and if you want a quick primer: it’s a great story of an ambitious idea which was turned into reality by an initial group of hardcore engineers which subsequently got company-wide support to the finish line. I think that they tell their story very well (with a hint of corporate marketing), so there’s no point in parroting it here – it’s a very good read.

Most people see NVIDIA only as a chip or graphics cards manufacturer which is remote from building gamer consoles but in my view, the company always had a “platform building” DNA that the world sees only now. Note that although I worked at NVIDIA until 2007, this post only reflects my opinion, and I don’t have any current insider information, so your guess is as good as mine. (more…)

The Blanket Chair: Who Needs Snuggies?

There’s something awesome about comfortable chairs, in which you can spend hours reading, working or simply chilling. This concept chair integrates a blanket into an all-in-one comfy package, allowing you to take advantage of its cuddliness.

The Autumn/Winter Chair was created by Polish fashion designer Aga Brzostek. The cover of this chair is like a big jumper, which is one of the reasons why it has sweater-like functions. It’s perfect to use as a cozy place during chilly winter nights. Hard foam was used for the structure of the chair. The seat and backrest were covered in softer foam for even more comfort. The cover is made from reclaimed wool to help keep you warm and toasty.

The cover is adjustable and removable, allowing users to change the look of the chair to their own preferences. It’s even got a handy pocket for holding magazines or books.

While this is still just a one-off concept piece, I suppose you could always ask your grandma to knit a similar cover for your favorite chair, but that could be quite the undertaking.

Google delivers Grand Canyon panoramas for lessthanpatient tourists

Google must take as long to sift through vacation photos as everyone else. A few months after it sent its Trekker cameras to sweep the Grand Canyon, the resulting panoramas are at last showing on Google Maps. The expansion gives us 360-degree views from paths spanning roughly 75 miles, including tougher routes like the South Kaibab Trail. The views won’t fully convey the majesty of standing on the canyon’s edge, but they’re quicker than booking a hiking expedition in Arizona — and certainly easier on the legs.

Facebook announces the Facebook Card for offline gift giving

A day after Facebook’s Q4 2012 earnings, in which the company saw a spike in mobile users, they have announced the Facebook Card. Essentially, it’s a gift card that can store multiple gift cards in one. Plus, the card will manage each balance from however many stores there are on the card. Users can manage their Facebook Card from the web or through the mobile app.

Users who want to gift a Facebook Card to a friend can do so right from the web. Just choose the stores that you want to put on the card and choose how much from each store will go on the card. Then, after checking out, the card will be sent directly to the recipient. Facebook Cards are reusable, so even after you’ve received another Facebook Card, it will instantly be added to your existing card, that way you’ll still have just one card.

The card can also hold multiple balances, and each balance can be managed independently, and when you use the card, Facebook will automatically send you a notification letting you know your remaining balance. It’s a pretty ingenious concept, and one that we’re not sure why it hasn’t already existed, but nonetheless, it’s here now.

The Facebook Card “will roll out gradually to people in the US,” according to the social networking giant, but no word on when exactly we’ll see these pop up. We’re sure this is just another revenue stream for Facebook, but we’re quite curious as to why a social network is jumping into the retail gift card business. Either way, we should definitely be seeing users eat this up once its out.

Qualcomm Roadmap Points To Android Key Lime Pie

qualcomm klp Qualcomm Roadmap Points To Android Key Lime PieGoogle’s naming convention for their Android mobile operating system has stuck to desserts that follow the alphabetical order, and just last December, it seems that the Android Key Lime Pie name has been confirmed as the next Android version. Well, here is another “confirmation” of sorts as the world continues to wait for what comes after Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was introduced at Google I/O in June last year. Apparently, a bunch of leaked Qualcomm roadmaps not only mentioned a particular “K-release” of Android, but it also spelt out the “Key Lime Pie” name to boot.

Apart from the name’s confirmation, there were also a bunch of timetables that listed down just when we can expect Key Lime Pie to arrive, with spring being mentioned a couple of times (that would be somewhere between March and June, generally speaking), with plans for Key Lime Pie-powered devices arriving in the market from the third quarter of the year. Thing is, there was some speculation that Android 6.0 will be Key Lime Pie instead of Android 5.0. Ah well, I guess we will just have to wait as the year progresses to know more.

Temple Run 2 beats “fastest growing mobile game” record by 22 days

Today the developers at Imangi Studios have announced that they’ve reached the 50 million app download mark for mobile devices, reaching this point a full 22 days earlier than the previous record holder. That previous record holder was Angry Birds Space, having crowned itself the fastest growing mobile game in April of 2012 by reaching 50 million downloads in 35 days. This of course means that Imangi Studios will be picking up the tab tonight when we all go out to celebrate their victory.

runnin

Can you imagine? That’s 50 million downloads of the Temple Run 2 app between the iTunes App Store, Google Play App Store, and Amazon Appstore in just 22 days. Massive amounts of love from the greater mobile gaming community for this next-generation runner without a doubt. Temple Run 2′s shot clock began on the 17th of January when it was released exclusively on the iTunes App Store for iOS devices.

Considering the 6 million downloads Temple Run 2 earned in just 24 hours as it was released to the iTunes App Store exclusively, one must wonder how many more downloads the game would have had if the Android versions came out at the same time. The Android version of the game was released the week after the iOS iteration, quickly rising to the #1 most popular app in the Google Play App Store within the first day as well. Temple Run 2 was the top free app in each of the app stores it was available on all at once.

Meanwhile the original Temple Run has been announced to have broken 170 million downloads at this point as well. And the Temple Run: Brave game also reached the #1 free download spot for a period after its release in the summer of 2012 too. And Imangi Studios make other games as well – mind you – but Temple Run has proven itself to have “performed beyond our wildest dreams”, as co-founder of Imangi Keith Shepherd noted this week, “Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us.” How about that?

Have you downloaded Temple Run 2 for your mobile device yet? Let us know if you’ve given it a tap or plan to in the near future – or why you’re avoiding it altogether!

Twelve South’s New SurfacePad Gives Your iPhone A Smart Cover

SPiPhone_stand_gallerymain_1

Twelve South announced a new iPhone accessory today, one that probably looks familiar if you’re aware of Apple’s Smart Cover and Smart Case products. The SurfacePad for iPhone is a sheath of Napa leather that wraps around your phone and provides basic level protection while adding a minimum amount of weight and thickness.

The company is clearly selling this as a fashion accessory, given the way they’re marketing it. It’s a nice looking addition anyway, and the thin cover should protect both front and back from scratches and scrapes, something that the iPhone 5 could use. It adds only 1.77 mm to your device’s thickness, and sticks onto the iPhone with a residue-free adhesive to make sure it isn’t going anywhere once applied. The front cover also folds back and doubles as a stand, hence its resemblance to Apple’s Smart covers and cases for iPad.

The SurfacePad comes in black, white and red, and is available for both iPhone 4/4s and iPhone 5 form factors. It’s less bulky than most folio type cases, if that’s your thing, and it retails for $34.99, which hardly breaks the bank, especially for a genuine leather case. It’s available to order now from TwelveSouth.com.

Gameloft Optimizes Popular Titles For BlackBerry 10 Platform

gameloft hd Gameloft Optimizes Popular Titles For BlackBerry 10 PlatformDo you think that the recently introduced BlackBerry 10 operating system is set to be a success? The quick answer from me would be yes, although the size of its success is surely far more difficult to predict. However, Windows Phone 8 might want to look over their shoulders, and it is encouraging to see and hear that developers too, want in on the BlackBerry 10 pie, and leading global publisher of games, Gameloft, has announced that they intend to bring over some of their most popular titles for the new BlackBerry 10 platform.

The list of titles that will be optimized include Shark Dash, N.O.V.A. 3: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, Asphalt 7: Heat, and UNO, as Gameloft believes that these will benefit from the features which are found in the BlackBerry 10 operating system, where among them include multiplayer capabilities which will enable users to have a completely immersive gaming experience.

The games mentioned will be available somewhere right after BlackBerry App World is launched, while other titles such as Oregon Trail American Settler, Ice Age Village, Real Soccer 2013, The Amazing Spider-Man, Six Guns, Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, The Dark Knight Rises and Let’s Golf! 3 will be thrown into the mix a few weeks after that.

LG Optimus L7 II Dual Rumored

lg optimus l7 2 LG Optimus L7 II Dual Rumored Has it been one year already? Apparently so, and we are referring to the introduction of the L-Style family of smartphones from LG, namely the L3, L5, and L7, which were introduced at last year’s edition of Mobile World Congress. Well, the next edition of MWC is about to happen in under a month’s time, and you can be sure that as the event’s date draws ever closer, more and more rumors will be accompanied by news reports to keep the entire industry buzzing, where it requires a keen mind to tell which is true, and others need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Word on the street has it that LG has an L7 successor in the pipeline, calling it the LG Optimus L7 II Dual.

This rumored smartphone is touted to come with a dual-core 1GHZ dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch IPS-display, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back, dual-SIM support, running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a 2,460 mAh battery in tow. It is also speculated that the LG Optimus L7 II Dual will arrive in Russia sometime in the second half of next month for approximately $430 a pop. That’s mighty pricey for a mid-range handset, don’t you think so?
