Facebook introduces 'a new type of gift card', is a lot like the old types

If you’re still desperate to get that Facebook acquaintance something for their birthday or some kind of anniversary, the Social Network has instituted a new way to take your money give. You’ll be able to pick up gift credit for the likes of Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora and Target, plucking what you’d like from the “gift cards and digital” category inside the existing Gifts tab, and stating an amount and the name of the lucky gift-getter. The friend will be immediately notified and a lovingly Facebook-branded card will be sent to their residence. The credit can be used immediately, reused and even hold multiple balances for the differing providers — ideal for the times you need fragrances, electronics and … olives. Balances can be monitored direct from your Facebook page or app, even updating and sending notifications when credit is being used. Facebook says the cards will roll-out gradually across the US, though wasn’t specific on any launch regions. Expect to hear more in the next few days.

Temple Run 2 Outpaces 50 Million Download Mark

Temple Run 2 Outpaces 50 Million Download MarkImangi Studios sure as heck has a hit on their hands with Temple Run 2, where it continues to outpace all the other competitors on the mobile gaming front when it comes to the number of downloads. It seems that Temple Run 2 has already been downloaded more than 50 million times across three platforms – iOS-, Android-powered and Kindle devices.

Going beyond 50 million downloads in a matter of 13 days meant it had pushed Rovio’s Angry Birds Space to second place, where the bird slinging title tool 35 days instead to achieve the 50 million milestone. Temple Run 2 was first released over on the App Store on January 17th, where it peaked at the #1 slot in Free Apps in no time at all as it picked up half a dozen million downloads in under 24 hours.

Following that, Google Play and Amazon Marketplace releases saw this gold-chasing sequel of a game continue its run of success (pardon the pun), hitting the #1 spot on both stores. Will Temple Run 2 surpass its predecessor’s total amount of downloads that stands at 170 million times (and counting) in due time? I am quite sure that it will, the question is, how long will it take? [Press Release]

GRID 2 arriving May 28 with pre-order bonuses

The sequel to the popular simulation racing game GRID now has a solid and confirmed release date of May 28 in the US, while other countries can get it on May 31. The game will hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on these dates, and all three platforms will have pre-order bonuses for its users, including a special edition.

grid-2

This has been a long-awaited sequel, and ever since the original GRID came out over four years, diehard gamers have been looking forward to a continuation of the game since. You can pre-order the game now at any number of locations, including Amazon, but each retailer has their own exclusive pre-order bonus, so choose wisely.

When you pre-order from GameStop, you’ll get the “Super-Charged Edition,” which includes the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Special Edition, plus two-new circuits around the Brands Hatch GP circuit, as well as the Nissan GT-R SpecV road car (pictured above), plus all five Yas Marina routes during the day. Pre-ordering from Best Buy will get you the “IndyCar Edition,” which comes with the Dallara IndyCar and IndyCar Pace car, plus two new routes at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Finally, pre-ordering on Amazon will score you the “HeadStart Edition,” which comes with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT car, as well as discounts in the car upgrades store in online game modes, and a “unique” RaceNet bonus. Overall, it sounds like either Amazon or GameStop have the best pre-order bonuses. As far as the Special Edition version of GRID 2, the game will come with “extra content” that’s redeemable through your console’s online store.

Vertu Smartphone With Android Not Confirmed Just Yet

vertu rumor Vertu Smartphone With Android Not Confirmed Just YetElizabeth Kranz, an Assistant Account Executive for Sharp Communications, Inc. who happens to have Vertu as one of their clients, has reached out to us after we commented on the very real possibility of a new Android-powered Vertu luxury phone that is set to hit the market sometime this year.

Here’s what Ms. Kranz had to say about the situation, “Thank you for your interest in Vertu’s upcoming product releases. We are unable to confirm any new product details at this time. However, Vertu has recently referenced a ‘strong product road map’ and we can confirm that we will be making an official announcement to the global media on the 12th February. The announcement will mark the beginning of a series of international events held by Vertu, starting in our home market, London, England.”

Well, I guess all we need to do now is to wait for a couple of weeks more before knowing more about the situation as the official details look set to break a couple of days before Valentine’s.

Apple Reportedly Discontinuing Mac Pro Sales In Europe Starting In March [Update: Confirmed]

Image (1) MacPro_3D_Box_34Whit49c4ea2009c5a-620x465.jpg for post 169301

Apple’s Mac Pro has been on the chopping block for a long time according to many industry watchers and pundits, and as of March it will actually get the axe in Europe. But the Pro’s debatable market appeal isn’t what’s causing the termination of sales in that region: the existing models simply don’t comply with Europe’s new regulatory standards for consumer electronics, according to 9to5Mac.

Those revised standards go into effect March 1st, and any products that don’t comply will have to be removed from sale. That doesn’t apply to existing stock, so Mac Pros that are already in store inventory could continue to rattle around sales channels for a while and go out to consumers.

The change in regulations doesn’t prevent Apple from selling a new Mac Pro in Europe, however. Apple made some changes to its Mac Pro last year, but those tweaks were far from extensive, and in fact looked likely to have had more to do with maximizing supply chain value than with improving the lineup. Apple’s Tim Cook has said that a new Mac Pro will be unveiled later in 2013, so there’s a chance Europe will have to go without for at least a little while.

An inability to sell the existing design in Europe could light a fire under Apple’s product development cycle for a new machine, but with Mac sales down considerably last quarter, it’s unlikely that the Pro, one of the most specialized and niche Macs in the lineup, is a top priority for Apple at this point regardless of these changes to European regulations.

Update: Apple has confirmed to The Loop that sales of the Mac Pro will indeed stop on March 1.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS and 115 IS hands-on (video)

Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS and 115 IS handson video

In Japan, they’ve been coined the IXUS 255 HS and IXUS 132, but folks in the US will probably recognize them as the ELPH 330 HS and 115 IS. By any name, they’re Canon’s two mid-range point-and-shoots for CP+, and while they were joined by the A2500 during this week’s announcements, that latter model didn’t seem to make it to the company’s booth here in Yokohama. In any case, if you’ve handled an ELPH model in recent years, you know what to expect here — Canon’s design hasn’t changed much, but we’re not complaining. The 330 HS includes a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, compared to a 16-megapixel CCD in the slightly smaller 115 IS.

Cosmetically, the biggest difference between the two is the powerful 10x optical zoom lens on the 330 HS, compared to a still-respectable 8x optic on the lower-end model. Both cameras offer the same familiar PowerShot UI, and they look nearly identical with the lens retracted. Zoomed in, however, it’s clear which camera is the more capable of the bunch. Both performed very well during our hands-on at Canon’s booth, though we’d definitely opt for the 330 HS, which offers a superior sensor and extended lens, not to mention built-in WiFi — it’s definitely worth spending an extra 60 bucks to snag the $230 HS model. Both cameras are set to ship beginning in March, but you can check them out in our walkthrough today, embedded just past the break.

Samsung Mobile Super Bowl tease “El Plato Supremo”

It’s time for Samsung to start with the teasers for the commercials for the Super Bowl this week with none other than “The Next Big Thing” campaign continuing on into 2013. This first teaser commercial for the final commercial (strange as that may seem) goes by the name “El Plato Supremo” and stars legal consultant Saul Goodman as well as comedic actors Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan. This team of misfits speaks about what they can and cannot say in the actual final commercial, resulting in “The Big Plate” replacing the Super Bowl.

samsung

This advertisement has been clearly outlined by Samsung Mobile as NOT being set to cover any new products, you may be interested to know. Samsung says in their official press release, and I quote, “[The advertisement] features the Galaxy family of products including the Galaxy Note™ II, Galaxy S® III and Galaxy Note™ 10.1.” It’s been worded in a way that could mean that there’s another ad coming later on for a new product, but makes it clear that the video you’re seeing today as well as the one you’ll be seeing later this week will show the three hero products Samsung has on the market already.

The extended 2-minute ad will be coming later this week and called “The Big Pinch.” The tenor of this advertisement line has been relatively constant as far as sarcasm goes, this ever since the first “The Next Big Thing” spots came out with the Samsung Galaxy S III and ongoing Galaxy Note lineup. While the first advertisements to take off in this series were the iPhone 5-related ads with Apple customers waiting in line for the release of said phone, the tag “The Next Big Thing is Already Here” continues through 2013.

Have a peek at the advertisement above and let us know if it’s enticing enough for you to take a guess at what Samsung has lined up for the rest of 2013. We’ll be heading to Mobile World Congress 2013 around the 23rd of February with much mobile excellence in mind – so stay tuned!
