Why It’s Impossible to Build a Concussion-Proof Helmet

Helmets can’t stop brain injuries. It’s not a failure of equipment or technology or attention paid, it’s a simple biological fact. Our old friend Mark Wilson has a wonderful breakdown of the technologies we have, and how they’re simply not and can never be enough. More »

Acer intros Liquid C1 smartphone packing Intel Lexington, low price to match

Remember that unnamed Acer phone we caught skulking about Intel’s CES event? It’s been given a proper launch: meet the Liquid C1. True to form, the fully revealed device centers around a Lexington-based, 1.2GHz Atom Z2420 processor. The chip gives the C1 enough grunt to power an 8-megapixel camera with burst shooting while keeping the price in check, at about 9,990 baht ($335) off-contract for the inaugural Thailand release in February. Locals will otherwise get a solid Android 4.0 smartphone with a 4.3-inch display, HSPA+ 3G and a battery that lasts for nine hours of 3G talk. Other countries in southeast Asia are next on the list to get Acer’s turn at an Intel-powered handset, although we wouldn’t expect to see it everywhere — Intel’s Uday Marty warns ZDNet that the absence of LTE will keep phones like the C1 away from markets where the faster data is commonplace.

Queen Elizabeth Will Float the Biggest Marine Turbine Engine in History

The 109,000 HP Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C diesel engine is the largest and most powerful, but at 2,300 tons, any warship it’s attached to is going to have trouble outmaneuvering jellyfish, much less torpedoes. Instead, the British Navy is relying on a new gas turbine engine that, while only half as powerful as the RTA96, weighs 68 times less. More »

Google Maps The Grand Canyon

trekker Google Maps The Grand CanyonGoogle has just mapped the spectacular Grand Canyon, the steep-sided canyon carved by the great Colorado River. Today, Google is releasing panoramic imagery of the national monument. Beautiful and interactive images, covering more than 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads, were captured by Google’s very own Trekker. Google’s mapping team strapped on the Android-operated 40-pound backpack carrying the 15-lens camera system. They walked the rocky terrain on foot, endured the temperature swings, and suffered a few muscle cramps, just to capture more than 9,500 panoramas of this masterpiece of nature. (more…)

Square Mobile Payments hit Verizon: iOS and Android card readers ahoy

This week the folks at Verizon have revealed their new collaborative efforts with Square and the Square Card Reader – mobile payments made utterly easy! This little device plugs in to the headphone jack on your iOS or Android device and allows you to take payments via credit card or Square Gift Card – easy as pie. The actual device costs less than the credit you get on your Square account (good as cash, essentially) at $9.97 (with $10 Square credit on your account when you start it up) – sound alright to you?

clarity

The Square Card Reader requires no contracts, you’ll have no minimum cash transactions needed ever, and there are no set-up fees. Essentially you’ll be heading in to your local Verizon outlet, tossing down a $10 bill and some change, and heading out the door with a brand new Square Card Reader of your very own. The way Square makes cash is to get a bit of a percentage for each transaction you make with the reader from that point on.

The fees you’ll be working with here is 2.75% of every swiped transaction or 2.5% and 15 cents for each sale that’s manually keyed in. All funds moved with your Square account are automatically deposited in your real-world bank account within (or around) 24 hours, and your whole account can be managed online. In addition to squareup.com, you’ll be able to check your balance and work with basically all of your account information right out of the box with one of several Square apps.

The iOS and Android versions of this app are essentially the same, with the iPad-specific app bringing on some additional management tools you’ll only otherwise be able to access in a web browser. Verizon begins selling the Square Card Reader on the 31st of January, 2013, and you’ll be able to pick them up nationally at most Verizon Wireless stores.

Will you be joining in on the Square fun? Or are you all about the NFC payments with your Google Wallet? If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, have you found any alternatives that you’d suggest as more awesome than Square? Let us know!

Grand Theft Auto V delayed, arriving September 17

Back in October, Rockstar officially announced a “spring 2013” release window for Grand Theft Auto V. However, the company announced today that they’re delaying the game, and will see a solid release date of September 17, 2013. The game will be heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but still no word on PC or Wii U availability.

GTAV2-580x326

Rockstar didn’t give a specific reason for the delay other than “to allow additional development time.” The development team apologized for the delay, but said that the extra time needed to polish up the game will be well worth the time for those eagerly waiting. The company says that GTAV “is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.”

Rockstar has been teasing us a good amount throughout these past few months, releasing new screenshots of the game what seems like every other day. They give us a good look at what to expect in the new game, and we’re even told that Grand Theft Auto V will feature Rockstar’s largest in-game world that they’ve ever developed.

The game will feature three protagonists, and it takes place in Los Santos, one of the three cities featured in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The upcoming game should hopefully blow all other past installments out of the water. We really like GTAIV, but we’re hoping for even more with GTAV, considering it will have the largest in-game world to date.

Legend of Zelda Key Hanger: Don’t Forget Your Keys!

It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this. No, not a sword, silly. Your house keys. This clever Zelda key hanger reminds you that you’d better take your keys with you when you walk out the door.

zelda key hanger

This Zelda key hanger measures 7.25″ x 5.1″ and was made by Etsy seller April Iverson Jessi Stanfil who clearly knows how to grab her keys in style. It’s an awesome geek deal at just $17(USD). It’s available in 1, 2 and 3-hook versions. And it will hang on your wall with no damage to the wall thanks to some 3M picture hangers on the back. That makes it perfect for apartment dwellers – at least those who care about getting their security deposit back.

Grab your keys and head off to save your beloved princess.

Holograms Coming to the Toy Deparment

What was your first impression when you saw the Princess Leia hologram in Star Wars? Seemed pretty crazy at the time. How in the world (errr galaxy far far away) did they get a 3D video to be played from a droid? It does not seem quite as crazy 35 years later. Hologram technology (a.k.a. holography) currently gets used in security (currency, drivers licenses), art, data storage and many other areas. Now it is even involved in games. Yes, games!

John Adams, experienced UK toy supplier, recently unveiled a hologram “game” at the 2013 London Toy Fair. HolograFX is described as an ‘interactive entertainment show’. Download pre-recorded projection holograms through the HolograFX app. Images are then generated out of your smart phone. Yes, what R2D2 did in Star Wars your phone will be able to do with this revolutionary game. Details are still sketchy on what exactly the ‘game’ will consist of. It appears that some sort of set is available for you to utilize in solving the mysteries. Also, early indicators are that you will somehow be able to project your own image into a hologram. See the video above for a demo. HolograFX launches in the US and UK later this year and no price has been announced. Whatever the price may be it will probably be cheaper than making your own R2D2 to project holograms though.

Thunderbolt vs. USB 3.0: The Definitive Showdown

Thunderbolt has arrived on the PC after being exclusive to the Macintosh platform for more than a year. With its promise of 10Gb/s‑per‑channel throughput, what self-respecting power user wouldn’t opt for a Thunderbolt-based external backup solution? Well, before you get too excited, let’s compare T-bolt point-by-point with its natural competitor, USB 3.0. After all, there’s more to a technology than pure performance, as we found out. More »
