Evernote’s Penultimate 4 goes free: Adds cloud sync & handwriting search

Evernote-acquired iPad digital handwriting app Penultimate has been updated, with v4 adding smoother inking while stripping away the price tag: what once was a $0.99 download is now free. Finally getting Evernote integration and sync fully baked in, Penultimate 4 now benefits from Evernote’s handwriting search feature, using server-side crunching to hunt down any digital ink notes based on regular text search queries.

There’s also support for viewing Penultimate notes on other devices than the iPad, thanks to Evernote’s synchronization. You can now open up handwritten notes on your iPhone, on the desktop, and anywhere else you have the Evernote app installed; however, editing the apps won’t apparently be supported.

Notes themselves look better on the iPad’s Retina display, and there’s Russian and Traditional Chinese language support added too. You’ll probably get best results with a stylus, of course, and there are plenty out there which work with the iPad.

If you’re a Penultimate user who doesn’t want to sign themselves up to Evernote, meanwhile, you can keep your existing account separate, though then you won’t get the multi-device access or, indeed, the handwritten note search. You can download Penultimate 4 for iPad here [iTunes link].

Google Maps Street View ads panoramic imagery from Grand Canyon

Back in October, we reported that the Google Maps Street View team took to the Grand Canyon to capture imagery from the beautiful landmark with their new Trekker camera backpacks. Today, Google has released the Street View imagery in all of its panoramic glory. Over 9,500 images of Grand Canyon were taken by the Google Maps team.

The images cover over 75 miles of trail all around the Grand Canyon, including this scenic route, and now you can hike the trails yourself without even getting up from your desk. Of course, the experience won’t be as fulfilling as actually being there, but at least you can see for yourself through images what you’re missing out on.

Google used specially-designed “Trekker” backpacks that are Android-powered essentially include 15 camera lenses that capture 360 degrees of landscape at once. The backpacks weigh about 40 pounds, so if you can imagine walking around with that thing under the hot sun of the American southwest, then you probably have a good idea of what it was like for the Google employees.

Google didn’t say what they’ll do next with the Trekker backpacks, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing more stunning landmark Street View imagery in the future, including other trails and areas around the world where the Trekker could only do the job. On a related note, the company added more info and imagery to some of the “world wonders“, so if you get bored with the Grand Canyon, hop on over there to explore even more.

Garnet red PlayStation 3 bundled with God of War: Ascension and 500GB HDD arrives this March for $349

Garnet red PlayStation 3 bundled with God of War Ascension and 500GB HDD arrives this March for $349

Sony apparently sees 2013 as a chance to colorize its aging PlayStation 3 console, today announcing yet another new color for the superslim packing 500GB of storage. To match the blood red tattoos found all over God of War star Kratos’ body, Sony colored this one garnet red, and is pairing the console with God of War: Ascension — thusly, the bundle arrives on March 12, the same day God of War: Ascension is scheduled to go up for sale. Unlike its “Classic White” brethren, you won’t get a full-year subscription to PlayStation Plus in this bundle — a disappointment considering this one costs $50 more. It does, however, include not just a copy of God of War: Ascension, but also God of War Saga (which collects the first three God of War games) and God of War: Origins Collection (which bundles the two God of War PlayStation Portable games). That’s a total of six God of War games included in this bundle, so you’d better really be into spending time with Kratos should you pick this up.

Are Downton Abbey Fans Gamers Or Just Weepers?

Are Downton Abbey Fans Gamers or Just Weepers? In the days of Downton Abbey, class distinctions were fairly
straightforward. There were the folks that owned the Abbey, the folks
that aspired to own the Abbey and then those that slaved over hot ovens,
spit and shined boots, delivered room service and scrubbed toilets.
Today those distinctions have blurred significantly where demographics
and psychographics tend to label you by your preferences.

Picture this: you’ve reached a level that you’ve never reached before and your handheld console is slowly running out of juice.
