Google Applies For Touch-Based Full Finger Keyboard Patent

Google Applies For Touch Based Full Finger Keyboard Patent The touchscreen revolution has certainly come a long way since the Apple iPhone brought touchscreen goodness to mainstream viability back in 2007 (has it been more than 5 years already? Time sure as heck passes by all too quickly when you’re having fun). Google has a veritable pool of talented folk running the show, and it seems that the Internet search giant has set their sights on a new kind of touch typing experience which has been mapped to a full, two-handed physical keyboard.

Yes sir, this bit of patent application news was revealed earlier today, although it was filed all the way back in September a couple of years ago. In fact, the USPTO doc outlines a method that helps display “geometric shapes on a touch-screen display… [that correspond] to a respective finger of a user” while enabling the possibility for text entry through the implementation of a “sliding movement.” In a nutshell, you might soon be able to type on glass using all your fingers, although we have seen a vague precursor to this idea in the past with a projected keyboard before.

Google updates Play Music app for Android, adds new art and more

Android users running a relatively recent version of the mobile OS will recognize the gold headphones immediately – it’s Android’s music app that comes pre-installed on mobile devices. An update for the app has just been rolled out, taking it to version 4.5.9 and adding a handful of new features, among them being new default album art and a bug fix for the freezing issue experienced by Galaxy S III owners.

First up is the bug fix, which corrects an issue experienced by far too many Samsung Galaxy S III owners. When used, the Music app would cause the handset to freeze, something that should stop happening once the update is installed. That’s the only bug fix that has been rolled out with this update, with the rest of the changes centering around new features and improvements on existing elements.

Instant mixes that contain more than 25 songs can now be set to continuous play all the songs, something previously unavailable. A “previous” button has been added to the widget, while album and playlist pages both now show pinning progress. Music can now be shuffled by album, artist, or playlist, and the default artwork has been updated with some new stuff.

If you have your mobile set to automatically install updates, you might have the new version already. If you don’t, you can manually grab the update at Google Play. The app is 5.3MB in size and runs on Android 2.2 and higher. The Music app works along with Google Play to automatically sync music purchases with the handset, and can be used in conjunction with a personal library of songs.

This Emergency Condom Delivery App Is the Reason Smartphones Were Invented

When you look down at your smartphone and think about how much it’s made your life easier and better, you’ll probably think about how the Internet is at your fingertips or how you can share filtered photos with friends or send texts without ever having to speak to anyone. You’ll probably think that’s why the smartphone was invented. You’d be wrong. The reason we have smartphones? For an emergency condom delivery app. More »

Verizon HTC Thunderbolt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Verizon HTC Thunderbolt Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich UpdateIf you happen to still hold on to your HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon Wireless, we feel your pain. We know that this is the first LTE-enabled smartphone from Verizon wireless, where it was originally meant to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update at the end of August last year, making the jump from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but unfortunately, Murphy happened to strike, and it started to feel as though the HTC Thunderbolt was going to remain in Gingerbread land forever.

Now that Verizon has already ensured that the support page for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Thunderbolt is live, you can bet your bottom hard-earned dollar that the smartphone will soon be on the receiving end of this long anticipated update. Some of the new features that will accompany the update include Face Unlock, Lock Screen Notifications and a Usage Center which will allow you to monitor your data usage and set alerts.

Apart from that, Verizon Remote Diagnostics will be part of the update bundle, where a technician will be able to take a peek within your Thunderbolt remotely. Sounds scary if abused, but hey, it beats making the trip to the service center, right?

Joe Biden: Gun Laws Won’t ‘Guarantee’ End To Mass Shootings

WASHINGTON — Curbing guns can’t ensure an end to mass slayings like December’s killings of 20 first-graders in Newtown, Conn., but it will reduce firearm deaths, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday.

“Nothing we’re going to do is going to fundamentally alter or eliminate the possibility of another mass shooting or guarantee that we will bring gun deaths down to 1,000 a year from what it is now,” Biden told reporters.

Biden said lawmakers can take steps “that have virtually zero impact on your Second Amendment right to own a weapon for both self-defense and recreation but can save some lives.” Doing that, he said, “seems to be a no-brainer.”

Blockbuster On Demand gives streaming a second chance, with odd limitations

Blockbuster On Demand gives streaming a second chance with odd limitations

Blockbuster hasn’t had much success shifting from physical rentals to digital, even under Dish’s wing. Nonetheless, it’s betting that the umpteenth time’s the charm with a relaunch of its Blockbuster On Demand streaming movie service. The revamp ticks many of the checkboxes for a modern by-the-title rental store with 1080p and 5.1-channel surround sound as well as apps for 2012 Samsung Smart TVs, Android and Roku 2 boxes. However, there’s a number of curious choices, and we don’t just mean the omission of a subscription model. It’s missing an iOS app, emphasizes apps for desktop viewing and leaves no way to watch HD video on anything but a TV — our mobile and PC screens have advanced in the past several years, Blockbuster. Idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, the rebirth presents more of a unified front than the one-time giant has offered in the past.

WSJ: PS4 Coming On February 20th

WSJ: PS4 Coming On February 20th

You may have seen that we covered a “Future of PlayStation” tweet+video from Sony earlier tonight. The date appeared conveniently close to Mobile World Congress (we’ll be there!), so we were dubious that this would be the actual launch of the PlayStation 4 (or Next PlayStation, if you prefer).

In any case, the Wall Street Journal says that Sony will indeed announce the next PlayStation on February 20th, and that the new console would be available by year’s end (supposedly November at the latest). It is surprising that Sony would potentially stall the sales of one of its profitable business for 10 months, but that’s what WSJ believes.

Don’t forget that Sony’s CEO said that the next PlayStation would come out after the next Xbox, but again, we doubt that Microsoft told Sony when the next Xbox would will out, and it could have been a ruse all along. If you remember the initial launch of the PS3, Sony was hurt by arriving to market one year after Xbox 360, so maybe the company does not want to see that ever again. I’ve re-included the video teaser in the full post – try to find any hidden clues if you want. The question is: do you believe WSJ (link: subscription required)? (more…)

TeleGeography’s 2013 Submarine Cable Map Plots 244 Cable Systems Of The World

TeleGeographys 2013 Submarine Cable Map Plots 244 Cable Systems Of The WorldTeleGeography, a telecommunications research and consulting firm that specializes in international networks, service providers, and undersea cables, has released an updated version of its Submarine Cable Map. TeleGeography’s 2013 Submarine Cable Map features a new design that is inspired by star charts and antique maps. I got to admit that it looks pretty cool. The new map also historically hints a connection between submarine cables and cartography, plotting around 244 – 232 in-service and 12 planned – active cables including ones expected to go live next year. Office 365 Home Premium now has Bing Apps for Office

Microsoft has announced that Office 365 Home Premium now has Bing Apps for Office, which integrate Bing-powered apps in the office suite. There are a total of five Bing apps that have been added for Excel and Word, adding a handful of functionality that was previously unavailable. The apps have all been rolled out, and are available now.

0216.Maps Shadow.jpg-550x0

The five new apps are comprised of Bing Finance, Maps and Dictionary for Excel, as well as Image Search, News Search, and Dictionary for Word. Going through them one-by-one, Bing Maps pictured above allows Excel users to map data on a visual map, providing such data as location names and tools for navigating within the map, such as zoom and panning. Road view, birds eye view, and map view are all available.

Then there’s the Bing Finance app for Excel, which is currently in beta mode. The Finance app aids in generating financial portfolios within Excel, providing real-time financial data, such as stock prices, within the program. There’s the Dictionary app for both Word and Excel, which is about what you’d expect in a dictionary. Spellings and definitions are provided.

Finally, there’s News search and Image search for Word. News search, like the name suggests, allows one to search for news and videos within a Word document, particularly handy if you’re writing a report or research paper. Then there’s Image search, which allows for users to find images from within a Word document, then easily embed them in the document via an “insert” button.
