Anthony Raines, Adairsville Tornado Victim, Is One Of 2 Fatalities As Storm Moves Eastward

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (AP) — As rain pelted down, Kandi Cash trudged through the splintered debris of her grandparents’ house, hoping to salvage photos and other family keepsakes after a day of violent storms raked the Southeast, leaving two people dead.

The demolished home was one of many in the Georgia city of Adairsville splintered by a massive storm front that punched across the Southeast on Wednesday and took aim Thursday at the densely populated eastern third of the country.

Along a path pocked by shattered homes and businesses, the storm has unleashed tornadoes and dangerous winds, easily flipping cars and trucks and cutting power to thousands.

Mental Health Solutions Alone Can’t Thwart Gun Violence, Experts Say

When it comes to preventing gun-related violence, President Barack Obama and the National Rifle Association agree on one key priority: Both call for measures aimed at preventing people with mental illnesses from owning firearms.

In the days after a lone gunman massacred 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., Obama called for an expansion of mental health services and more stringent background checks for gun buyers to screen out those who may pose a danger. The NRA proposed the creation of a national registry of people with mental illnesses to help limit their ability to purchase guns.

But public health and firearms experts assert that focusing on mental illness is unlikely to achieve a significant reduction in gun violence, because the vast majority of shootings are the handiwork of people who do not fit the profile of those deemed dangerous. Moreover, by shifting the debate away from gun control and toward mental health concerns, proponents run the risk of further stigmatizing mental illness, discouraging those who confront it from seeking professional help.

Dyson teases new product trio with fancy new motor

British brand Dyson has sucked in the home and blown in public bathrooms, but now the design darling is teasing a mysterious new trio of products for launch in February. Official info on the new products is in very short supply, but according to a launch invite sent to Australian site Current, they’ll be the culmination of seven years of development on a new digital motor.

dyson_device_invite

The motor is the handiwork of forty engineers, so the invite claims, and runs at sixteen bars of pressure and with six of Dyson’s own Helmholtz silencers. Judging by the exploded diagram it’s a reasonably compact assembly, too, all coming together into a donut of sorts, though it’s tough to judge scale.

Whispers to the Australian site claim the new products will be “primarily commercial” rather than domestic, in their focus, so think more along the lines of Airblade dryers than Dyson’s cyclonic vacuum cleaners. Dyson has already flirted with heating and cooling with its “bladeless” fans, but this new super-quiet motor might find its way into a more serious air conditioner, perhaps, or even a robotic vacuum cleaner.

Dyson’s Australian event is on February 19, though we’re guessing that it has nothing to do with HTC’s presumed M7 launch which is also scheduled for the same day. Still, the thought of a new HTC phone with a weather app that could not only tell your the forecast but forcibly blow the clouds out of the sky does have its appeal.

BlackBerry Z10 is new flagship for…BlackBerry

Yes sir, the RIM (Research In Motion) company from Canada that millions have come to know (and for some, subsequently love), has changed its name to reflect the device that made them famous – BlackBerry. Yup, it will be plain BlackBerry from now on, and this morning, the Canadian company has just announced a couple of new smartphones from their stable which will of course, run on their also recently launched BlackBerry 10 operating system. The flagship model between the two would be the all-touch device known as the BlackBerry Z10.

Of course, initial impressions of the device have proved to be generally favorable, although there are concerns about the battery life (or rather, the lack of it) for the BlackBerry Z10, but perhaps things might change in the future as BlackBerry picks up the pace in time to come (assuming they have enough time to help turn the situation around for them). Just what kind of hardware does the BlackBerry Z10 pack underneath the hood when it comes to other comparable devices that hail from the Android, iOS and Windows Phone platforms?

Right now, we do know that the BlackBerry Z10 will cost $599 thereabouts as an unsubsidized smartphone in the US, while our friends living across the pond will be able to get it free on contract. Will such a deal be made available as carriers like AT&T and Sprint have already embraced the BlackBerry Z10? Only time will tell.

It tips the scales at 138 grams and measures 5.13” x 2.6” x 0.37”, sporting a 4.2-inch full touchscreen LCD display at a pixel density that outdoes the iPhone 5, Google Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920 – barely, at 356 ppi and carrying a resolution count of 1280 x 768 which your eyes will definitely fall in love with.

The 1,800mAh battery will be accompanied by 16GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded via a microSD memory card slot, while the back carries an 8-megapixel camera with a front-facing 2-megapixel shooter that also does High Definition video recording. A dual-core 1.5GHz processor runs proceedings from within with 2GB RAM helping it chug along. Do you think that you would make the BlackBerry Z10 plunge when it arrives?

Google’s Latest Android Statue Is Resplendent in Chrome

Google’s a massive fan of celebrating Android through the medium of sculpture. Its latest, though, is a surprisingly tasteful vision in shiny, shiny chrome, strapped to the side of one of Google’s Mountain View buildings. More »

BlackBerry Link now up for grabs to sync your BB10 device and computer

Blackberry Link now up for grabs for desktop syncing of BB10 devices

If you’ve managed to score a BlackBerry 10 device already (meaning you’re likely speaking the Queen’s English), you’ll be able to sync it up with your desktop as soon as you can cable them together. BlackBerry Link, the new name for Blackberry Desktop software, is now available for download everywhere (including the US) to backup and sync content like pictures, audio and video. Legacy handsets running version 7.1 of the OS or earlier will still require the previous Desktop app, but Playbook tablets running BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 will also work with the latest version. Hit the source to grab it, and don’t forget add another revision to your RIM BlackBerry vocabulary.

Is Google’s new Chrome Android a tease for Android apps in the browser?

The new appearance of a chrome Android statue at Google’s Mountain View campus has prompted speculation that the company is nearing release of Android app support in the Chrome browser, perhaps for launch at Google IO this May. The shiny statue – snapped here by Googler Paul Wilcox – is interesting because it’s not huddling up with the usual Android models, representing each iteration of the smartphone and tablet OS, but in Building 45 across the road.

chrome_android

That has led to suggestions that it’s a hint for some new functionality Google is developing. According to Mobile Geeks‘ sources, the dressed-up ‘droid is intended to represent an Android runtime for Chrome that Google has had in testing for around six months, and which would free Android apps from mobile devices and put them on the desktop.

It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen companies pull Android software from its usual habitat and try to make it palatable for PC and notebook users. BlueStacks, for instance, has been pushing its Android app player system for some time now, allowing titles written for the mobile OS to be run as if native code on Windows and Mac machines.

Google’s approach would apparently be slightly different, so the rumors indicate, relying on a new component of the Chrome browser. That would also presumably have an impact on Chromebooks, the low-cost ultraportables based around the cloud and Chrome, and which would suddenly gain thousands of new apps courtesy of an Android hook-up.

Whether that’s actually the case, or if Google is simply getting more creative with its window furniture, remains to be seen. We’ll know more at Google IO, which begins May 15.
