LG Optimus L7 successor leaks in Russia with 4.3-inch display, dual-SIM ability

Successor to the budget LG Optimus L7 leaks in Russia with 43inch display, dualSIM ability

As entry-level phones go, last year’s Optimus L7 had a few pluses on its score sheet — but equally some serious drawbacks, including a reluctant touchscreen and a shoddy camera module. There’s always hope for progress in this business, however, and given that LG already hinted at a new L-series phone in its earnings report, we’re inclined to believe a leak that’s just come in from Russian site Hi.tech.mail.ru. The pictures show a much softer-edged design with a dedicated SIM-switch button down below, in both black and white. In terms of specs, we’re looking at a 2,460mAh battery that is said to last for two days, an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 720p video and a 1GHz dual-core chip powering Android 4.1 with LG’s custom UI on top. The Russian price of 12,990 rubles equates to around $430, which is a lot more than the $300 SIM-free price of the first L7 (not to mention a Nexus 4) — but then these currency conversions are often wayward.

Research company predicts US tablet market will reach 71.6 million units by 2018

The tablet market is growing at an incredible rate all around the country. Many analysts and research firms have already found that more and more consumers and business users are replacing aging computers with tablets. Many of the business users that are getting tablets are getting these devices as their first mobile computing product rather than replacing a notebook computer.

ipad2

A company called Transparency Market Research has published a new study looking at the tablet PC market in the United States. According to the company, tablet PCs shipped 34.2 million units in 2012. The company is predicting that the tablet PC market within the United States will reach 71.6 million units by 2018. That would give the tablet market in the US a growth rate of 13.1% between 2012 and 2018.

The company says that in 2010 the iPad held the largest share of the tablet market accounting for more than 80% of the US market. The company predicts that Android-based tablets will pass the iPad by 2017. The most popular tablets currently have screens ranging between 9.6-inches and 11-inches with more than 25 million tablets in this range sold in 2012.

However, the company says that the popularity of this large-screen tablet segment is declining. As the popularity of the larger screen tablets declines, the popularity of tablets with screens eight-inches and smaller is growing significantly. I’d wager this has a lot to do with the large and ever-increasing number of seven-inch Android-powered tablets that continue to come to market at low prices. The company also predicts that mobile workers will continue to adopt tablets at an impressive rate with a growth rate of 18.1% from 2012 to 2018.

Honda and Acura to take advantage of Apple Siri Eyes Free tech

The push is on for many automakers to add new hands-free technology to their vehicles to help drivers keep their eyes on the road. Some automakers, such as Ford, have had hands-free communication systems and their vehicles allowing drivers to control certain functions using the voice for a long time. Other automakers have been slower to adopt such technology.

With the federal government now pushing to reduce distracted driving, automakers are rushing to add new technology to their vehicles. One of these new technologies is Apple’s Siri Eyes Free technology. We looked at the Siri Eyes Free system in the past in the Chevrolet Sonic. Automaker Honda has now announced that some its Honda branded vehicles and Acura vehicles will get Siri Eyes Free technology in 2013 models.

It appears that Honda’s adoption of this technology was last minute; support isn’t baked in as a factory installed option. Honda is offering Siri Eyes Free support as a dealer installed option on the 2013 Accord and on the Acura RDX and ILX models. Honda also says that later this year iPhone owners using iOS 6 or higher will be able to use Siri to perform a number of tasks in the vehicle.

Honda isn’t clear if these tasks are something special that it has cooked up or if these features are basic Eyes Free capabilities such as sending text messages, making phone calls, and playing music. Honda says that it has reengineered software and its vehicle infotainment systems to integrate Siri Eyes Free using its Bluetooth HandsFreeLink onboard microphone and speakers.

iStroll Kid iPad holder connects to a stroller letting kids communicate, play, and learn

Children love technology, especially tablets such as the iPad. The huge number of educational and entertainment apps available for kids on the Apple iPad means that parents can give their kids an early start on learning all sorts of important information while the kid thinks they’re playing games. The problem for parents is that children are notoriously hard on gadgets meaning some sort of secure iPad holder is often a requirement.

istrollkid

A new iPad holder called the iStroll Kid has turned up on Kickstarter seeking the funding to enter production. The iPad holder is specifically designed to attach to a child’s stroller and securely hold the iPad while keeping it within the child’s reach. The holder has a section that is designed to hold the iPad like any other iPad accessory.

That iPad holder is attached to a frame that clamps onto the tubing of the stroller. While some parents might like this simply to allow their children to play educational games or watch video while shopping or doing other things, this iPad holder can also be incredibly important to parents of special-needs children. A number of special-needs children take advantage of tablets like the iPad as their sole means of communication with parents.

The project is very new on Kickstarter and is seeking $10,000 enter production. The project has 41 days to go and at the time of writing has raised $88. The project will fund on March 13 if it hits its funding goal. A pledge of $35 or more will get you the iStroll Kid iPad holder and the designer expects to sell it for $49.99 when it goes into production. The estimated ship date for the product is March of 2013.

Nokia confirms Windows Phone 7.8 coming to the UK today, prices Lumia 620 at £149.99

Nokia 620 priced at 14999 in the UK, arrives on February 6th

Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia’s update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2’s pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that’ll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It’s available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.

You’ll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUK and Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it’ll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we’ve got some bad news — Nokia has said it’s not likely to happen.

NASA launches high-tech next-generation TDRS-K communications satellite

NASA successfully launched the next generation communications satellite called the Tracking and Data Relay Satellites, known as TDRS-K. The satellite headed into orbit atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. The rocket lifted off at 8:48 PM EST on Wednesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

NASA says the launch went off without a hitch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. NASA says that the satellite system is designed to provide tracking, telemetry, command, and high-bandwidth data return services for numerous science and human exploration missions in orbit around the Earth. NASA says the missions the satellite servers include the ISS and the Hubble space telescope.

The space agency says the launch of this new satellite has started its refurbishment of the aging space network. NASA currently has a fleet of seven satellites orbiting the Earth and the new satellite adds new and greater capabilities to that aging network. The satellite reached its planned orbit with no complications and NASA says that it will now conduct a three-month test phase on the satellite before putting it in the service.

The new TDRS-K satellite has several modifications making it different than the older satellites in the TDRS network. The modifications include redesigned telecommunications payload electronics and a new higher performance solar panel design intended to generate more power. NASA says that additional power is needed to meet growing S-band requirements. Another of the satellite’s design changes includes a return to ground-based processing of data allowing the system to serve more customers and meet growing communications requirements. NASA plans to launch the next satellite in the system called TDRS-L in 2014 with TRDS-M expected to complete the manufacturing phase by 2015.

Nokia’s baby Lumia 620 makes colorful debut in UK

Nokia’s cheapest Windows Phone 8 handset, the Lumia 620, has gone on sale in the UK, with the baby of the bunch packing a budget price tag but borrowing several of the features from the more expensive Lumia 820. Arriving on O2, 3, and Virgin today, with Vodafone picking up the 620 on February 6, the new Lumia is priced from £149.99 ($237) on O2 pre-pay agreements, or free on O2 agreements of £18.50 ($29) or above.

Inside there’s a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, along with 8GB of storage and a microSD card slot. The front is dominated by a 3.8-inch WVGA ClearBlack display which Nokia claims is particularly good for outdoor visibility.

Of course, the real magic is the interchangeable covers, something Nokia will be pushing hard on the fashion angle for the Lumia 620. Which you get in the box will depend on which carrier you go for: O2, for instance, will be supplying the black as standard but running a promotion where buyers can get a yellow, orange, green, white, or cyan cover free.

3 and Virgin will offer the black version by default, while Vodafone will be offering either the cyan or white versions. Covers themselves will be sold individually; exactly how much they’ll cost hasn’t been confirmed, but Nokia tells us they’ll be “less than £20 ($32).” Don’t hold out hope for an official wireless charging cover, however, as the Finnish firm also says the Lumia 620 is “unlikely” to get that functionality.

We’ll have a full review of the Lumia 620 soon, but until then check out our hands-on with the smartphone for more details.

Toshiba’s 2012 Q3 makes $322 million net profit, sees a future in nuclear

Toshibas 2012 Q3 makes $322 million net profit, thinks its future is nuclear

Toshiba’s latest numbers may not reach the dizzying heights of last quarter, but at least it’s not back to filling out its spreadsheets in red pen. The company is announcing profits of $322 million from net sales of $14.9 billion. A big chunk of that change came from Tosh’s “social infrastructure” division, which produces power plants, medical systems and radiation detectors — while its home entertainment and computing divisions sat and watched profits continue to decline. Toshiba has maintained the cut-back forecast it made in October, expecting annual net profits to be around $1.2 billion, more than enough for it to send you a cute bug-eyed robot for your next birthday.
