Mark Zuckerberg Reveals Why Facebook Is So Desperate For Your Photos

In social media land, there’s a war waging over your photos. But like so much else in the Twinstabook sphere, what you share matters only in determining what those sites can sell.

For the past year, all the major social media services have taken part in a never-ending spree of makeovers aimed at enticing users to hand over their photos, from filters and camera apps, to photo-heavy profiles and bigger pictures. The explanation for the photo frenzy has centered around the simple fact that people like to look at pictures. So, as people share more of their snapshots, the platform becomes a stickier place.

But on an earnings call with analysts on Wednesday evening, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered a clearer view of what’s really fueling the fight for your photos: social media sites want you to share your photos so advertisers can share theirs.

Watson heading to college, honing administrator-pranking algorithms

There comes a time in every young supercomputer’s life when he or she must leave the house. Having taken the world of game shows by storm and made appearances at places like Sloan-Kettering, Citigroup and the Cleveland Clinic, Watson’s ready to go to college. The advance three-year schooling will find a modified version of IBM’s computer making its way to New York State’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where it will be learning lessons in English and math. Amongst the course load are plans to sharpen Watson’s cognitive skills and ability to manage data. The residency will also offer students a chance to get to work closely with one of the supercomputers that will one day rule us all.

Take My Money: Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Action Figures

I love the classic Kenner Star Wars action figures. I still have many of these originals in my toy collection. That said, I haven’t been impressed by many of the Star Wars action figure lines since. Some are too muscular and look silly, others just seem cheap looking to me. But the new Star Wars Black Series looks ridiculously awesome.
Star Wars Black Series
The first wave of this new line of figures will be released in August of 2013 and the image above should be enough to get your attention. Look at the detail on Luke and his X-Wing pilot suit. These figures are 6″ tall and have added articulation, and removable accessories to go with that extra detail.

Star Wars Black Series1
They aren’t priced super high either. We’re talking $19.99(USD) each. The first wave will include Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Darth Maul, and an Imperial Sandtrooper. I can’t wait to see them come out with Boba Fett in this series. Stay tuned for pre-order details as they emerge.

T-Mobile boosts its New Orleans 4G coverage ahead of Super Bowl and Mardi Gras

New Orleans is going to be exciting place in February, with the Super Bowl coming up in a few days and Mardi Gras coming a couple weeks later. The city will be inundated with people, most of whom will be wielding smartphones, a fair number of which will probably be T-Mobile customers. In preparation, the carrier has given its 4G in the region a boost, ensuring more customers can access and utilize the network.

T-Mobile customers wanting to tweet, status update, upload, download, and otherwise share their real-life Super Bowl and Mardi Gras experiences in the digitalsphere will be happy to note that the carrier has determined areas around New Orleans where data and voice activity is expected to be high and has given the network a boost to ensure it can handle the extra load.

Likewise, to make sure that the T-Mobile users both inside and around the Superdome have access to the network, the carrier has installed a DAS (Distributed Antenna System) unit. The Weidenberg Park area will also benefit from what they refer to as COWs, which stands for Cells on Wheels. This will increase both voice and data load capacities in that specific area.

T-Mobile has also erected what it calls a Command Center, which is tasked with monitoring the network to make sure that all runs smoothly. Finally, it also has implemented special event parameters that will boost voice and data based on the fluctuating demand during the big events. As a service to customers, the carrier will also be provided a T-Mobile branded SUV that will roll around and serve as a charging station, as well as offering TVs and video games.
