AT&T And Verizon’s CEOs Interested In Device Monthly Installment Plans

ATT Verizon AT&T And Verizons CEOs Interested In Device Monthly Installment PlansLast year it was reported that T-Mobile would be ending carrier subsidies, instead asking customers to pay full price for their phones albeit over monthly installments repaid over the duration of their contract. Considering that many customers do rely on carrier subsidies in the US to gain access to high-end smartphones without having to pay full price, naturally this move can be thought of as somewhat risky. However it looks like T-Mobile isn’t alone on this as reports are suggesting that both AT&T and Verizon’s CEOs have expressed their interest in introducing monthly installments as well over subsidies.

According to AT&T’s CEO, Randall Stephenson, “That’s something we’ve looked at on several occasions. I kind of like that idea […] It’s something we’re going to be watching,” while Verizon’s CEO was quoted as saying that the concept is “very intriguing,” but expressed worry that customers might be put off by the idea of having to pay full price for a smartphone. The US is one of several countries around the world where carrier subsidies are pretty heavy, compared to countries such as Singapore or Malaysia where subsidies are marginal and where customers typically end up paying full price for their phones anyway.

Samsung Galaxy Pop Announced For South Korea

8429165910 63db7e3ae6 c 640x435 Samsung Galaxy Pop Announced For South KoreaA couple of days ago we reported on the possibility that the Samsung Galaxy Premier could be getting a quad-core update, at least as far as the South Korean market is concerned, and sure enough they did! Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Pop which is essentially the Galaxy Premier, with the main difference being that the Galaxy Pop will sport a 1.4GHz quad-core processor under the hood versus the Galaxy Premier which came with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. However apart from the upgrade in processor, everything else remains pretty much the same which means that customers can look forward to a 4.65” HD Super AMOLED display, 3G/LTE connectivity, 8/16GB storage options, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing camera with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on board with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz UI on top. It is expected to be priced at ₩700,000 which is about $644 after conversion. It is unclear as to whether the Galaxy Pop will be announced for US markets, but hopefully Samsung will have more to share at MWC 2013.

Apple Trademarks Store Layout And Design

apple store1 Apple Trademarks Store Layout And DesignApple’s retail stores, just like Starbucks, is pretty iconic in terms of its design, the choice of furniture, the colors and its layout, and it seems that Apple has been successfully granted a trademark over the layout of their store and its design! This trademark was originally applied for back in 2010 and was successfully granted about a week ago. According to the trademark’s description, “There are cantilevered shelves below recessed display spaces along the side walls, and rectangular tables arranged in a line in the middle of the store parallel to the walls and extending from the storefront to the back of the store.”

Most, if not all of Apple’s retail stores adhere to this layout, albeit with minor changes depending on the size of the location, but it is safe to say that regardless of which country you’re in, you can expect to find a similar shopping experience whenever you walk into an Apple retail store. In fact some of Apple’s competitors have tried to mimic the design i.e. Microsoft, and spotted in China awhile back were fake Apple stores where the layout was pretty much copied to the letter.

Samsung announces Galaxy Express smartphone

Samsung does seem to be hell bent on occupying just about every single strata of the smartphone hierarchy, ranging from entry level to mid-range and high end models. I guess they are beginning to be the new Nokia, dominating the Android smartphone market just like how Nokia used to be the final word in featurephones. Of course, the smartphone landscape is a whole lot larger compared to just Android, as there are other contenders jostling for space such as iOS, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10. Having said that, we come face to face with a new mid-range Android smartphone from the South Korean conglomerate, namely the Samsung Galaxy Express.

The Samsung Galaxy Express has been touted to be a feature-rich multimedia powerhouse which will offer 4G LTE speed to just about everyone and anybody. Being a value-driven 4G LTE smartphone that was specially designed for the young social explorer, it will also be accompanied by the unique AllShare Play feature which allows a device-to-device remote sharing, letting you share and play content freely across Samsung Smart TV and Smart mobile devices.

Apart from that, there is also the inclusion of S Beam, which lets you share and transfer whatever files you want from your Galaxy Express over to another compatible device so that you can enjoy sharing in real time. Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) functions as a simple mirroring interface so that you can hook up your smartphone directly to any HD display for convenient and comfortable viewing, while Near Field Communication (NFC) paves the way for auto-transfer of text or data wirelessly to other NFC enabled devices.

As for the other hardware specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Express, they would include a crystal clear 4.5” Super AMOLED Plus screen, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory which can be further expanded via a microSD memory card slot, all running on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. There is no word on pricing or availability as at press time.

Next Generation Samsung Galaxy Tablets Confirmed

next gen tabs Next Generation Samsung Galaxy Tablets ConfirmedSamsung is certainly casting a really, really wide net when it comes to the amount of smartphones and tablets which they will be introducing to the market later this year. First of all, we have confirmation that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (which will obviously be the successor to the Galaxy Tab 2) will be coming our way, as it has been confirmed by Samsung’s very own UAPROF (User Agent Profile) files.

Apart from that, we have new information that the UAPROF files of the Samsung GT-P3200, GT-P5200 and GT-P8200 are made available. Needless to say, some juicy details can be garnered from these UAPROF files, and using our powers of deduction, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0”/8.0” will rely on a screen resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels (bah, no High Definition here!) while the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1” will have a more respectable pixel count of 1280 × 800. As for the cream of the crop, the Galaxy Tab 3 Plus, that will have a monster screen resolution of 2560 × 1600 that is the equivalent as that of the Nexus 10. Image courtesy of PhoneArena.

Murtazin: next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to Rolex-style pricing

Murtazin next Vertu blingphone will run Android, stoop to a Rolexstyle price

Our favorite Russian blogger, who’s admittedly often wrong on a few little things, says he has the low-down on a new Vertu smartphone coming in February. It’d be the first release since Nokia sold the luxury brand to a private equity firm last year, and Eldar Murtazin claims the rumored switch from Symbian to Android is definitely a go-er. He also reckons the handset will cost around $4,000, which is loose change compared to some previous Vertus — like the $27k model shown above. There are no further details to report, aside from a fleeting reference to the legacy of Nokia’s 8800 slider, so don’t go converting your Swiss francs just yet.

ZTE To Feature Firefox OS Smartphone At MWC 2013

zte mozilla ZTE To Feature Firefox OS Smartphone At MWC 2013Just in case you figured out that Android, iOS, Windows Phone 8, and even BlackBerry 10 are not good enough to keep the smartphone and tablet segments happy with their respective devices, here we are with yet another mobile operating system to whet your appetite and perhaps, pique your curiosity – the Firefox OS. Just which device will run with the Firefox OS right underneath the hood? Why, it would have to be ZTE and their upcoming device, which has yet to be named, and said device will be featured at Mobile World Congress that is set to happen later next month.

What you see above is not the upcoming device, but rather, also a rather huge smartphone known as the ZTE Grand Memo which was spotted in the past. It does seem as though the upcoming device will be a major one, as ZTE has thrown in a couple of hashtags that suggest something big is looming across the horizon – and they are #ZTEGrandMemo and #ZTEMozilla.

White Nexus 4 leaks in full

LG’s white Nexus 4 has shown up in the wild, with a teaser leak yesterday making way for a full gush of live shots of the pale-cased Android handset. The shimmering smartphone cropped up in person over at Vietnamese site Tinhte, showing off its iridescent back plate finish, as well as confirming that it will be pretty much business-as-usual from the front, with little change from the existing Nexus 4.

The fascia and bezel are stil black, meaning face-on there’s no change from the existing black Nexus 4. While an all-white finish might have been preferable, LG does at least have Samsung’s prior example to point to: the white version of the Galaxy Nexus, for instance, had a pale body but stuck with the black screen surround.

Still, the finish LG has given to the back of the phone is neat, and looks better than the black variant which has been on sale – though in short supply – for some time now. What remains to be seen if if LG can produce them at any rate that matches demand, though the company has said it will ramp up production from February.

The black Nexus 4 reappeared in the Google Play store earlier this week, though availability was patchy and some regions are back to showing the unlocked, SIM-free handset as out of stock. Meanwhile, ASUS is believed to be preparing a new version of the Nexus 7 tablet, complete with a higher resolution display.

Mugen Power offers new 1800 mAh extended battery for Lumia 820

If you’re the owner of the Nokia Lumia 820 smartphone that is desperate to get additional runtime from your device, you might like this new extended battery from Mugen. I say you might like this new extended battery, because the stock battery offers 1650 mAh of power while this extended battery offers 1800 mAh. That’s not exactly a huge amount of extra runtime.

lumia-820-battery

Mugen Power, the company behind this extended battery says that that will give you an additional 9% battery life compared to the factory battery. The good news is that this extended power battery is apparently no thicker than the factory battery. The company says that the new battery is fully compatible with the Lumia 820 and fits “well” inside the smartphone.

What that means in a nutshell is that unlike some massive capacity batteries the company offers, this one needs no fat battery door and the phone gets no thicker. The battery has been tested to ensure high quality and it is compliant with CE requirements. That should mean its safe and won’t burst into flames in your pocket.

The battery is available right now in the United States for $44.95. The model number for the battery is HLI-BP5TSL and the battery is a lithium-ion unit. The real question is are you willing to pay $45 for 9% more runtime?
