Sprint To Carry 128GB iPad 4

ipad 4 Sprint To Carry 128GB iPad 4It was just yesterday that Apple announced the 128GB iPad 4 and if you were planning on picking one up for yourself, it seems that Sprint will be one of the places that you will be able to get your hands on it. This was confirmed by Sprint’s Vice President of Product Development, Fared Adib in a statement released to iMore where he was quoted as saying, “Sprint is delighted to confirm that we will be offering our customers additional iPad options with the new 128GB iPad with Retina display.” For those who missed the news, the iPad 4 with 128GB was announced just yesterday and apart from the upgrade in storage, everything else remains pretty much the same.

The price tag on the other hand saw an increase and if you are planning to get the WiFi + Cellular option, be prepared to fork out a whopping $929 for it! Of course with the Retina display, apps, ebooks and digital magazines are getting noticeably larger in terms of the amount of memory they take up, so for iPad users who rely on the tablet heavily for their reading needs, perhaps the price tag might be justifiable although personally I think at $929 Apple might be asking for too much.

Blackberry 10 Z10 Retail Box Caught On Camera

z10 retail box Blackberry 10 Z10 Retail Box Caught On CameraIn a few hours, RIM will be officially taking the wraps off Blackberry 10 and hopefully share additional details about the operating system, accompanying hardware, apps, availability dates and maybe even pricing, but until then we guess we will just have to contend with leaked images and whatnot. Now if you were planning on picking up a Blackberry 10 Z10 device for yourself, a photo spotted in the Crackberry forums has revealed what appears to be the retail box for the Z10 which appears to be a typical Blackberry-styled packaging except with a colorful Z10 wording on the front. It is unclear as to what sort of accessories RIM will be including in the box i.e. earphones, charger, casing (probably not) and etc., but given that the announcement is only hours away, hopefully more will be revealed then. It is also interesting to note that there is no carrier branding on the box either suggesting that this box could be an off contract device – either that or the carrier sleeve for the box was not shown on purpose.

Angry Birds Star Wars Available For Blackberry 10

Angry Birds Star Wars 602x255 Angry Birds Star Wars Available For Blackberry 10We know that RIM plans to have at least 70,000 apps at Blackberry 10’s launch which will be taking place in a few hours and while having a larger quantity of apps is one thing, it’s another to have quality apps. After all no one really cares for an app store full of subpar apps and hastily thrown together ones, right? While it remains to be seen as to which quality and big name apps will be making its way onto Blackberry 10, those planning to get their hands on a Blackberry 10 device might be interested to learn that Rovio has revealed that they will be supporting Blackberry 10 with the Angry Birds Star Wars game which is currently priced at $0.99 on Blackberry World.

Of course we’re not saying that customers will be flocking to Blackberry 10 just for Angry Birds Star Wars, but given that the Angry Birds franchise has to be one of the most popular mobile games since its launch, having it attached to Blackberry 10 is at the very least a good sign of quality, big name apps that we might be able to expect. Either way hopefully RIM will be announcing some of these big name apps at its event which will be taking place at 10AM ET, so check back with us then for the details!

Nissan drops Leaf price by 2,500 pounds in the UK

Nissan Leaf to cost 2,500 pounds less in the UK

Just a few weeks after Nissan dropped the price of the Leaf in the US, eco-minded car buyers across the pond will be able to snag theirs for a little less as well. Indeed, the popular Japanese EV is now £23,490 ($37,115), which is £2,500 less than the initial sticker price. As with the stateside version, some of the cost reduction stems from local manufacturing — Nissan hopes to start churning out the latest Leafs from its Sunderland UK factory in a few months. The company has also introduced a 6.9 percent financing rate, plus a lease option of around £239 ($375) a month to sweeten the pot. If that sounds like an enticing proposition, then check out the press release below for more details.

Starfish smartwatch to debut at MacWorld

There are a number of smartwatches on the market that promise to interface with smartphones and perform various other tasks. A company called Starfish Technologies is set to unveil a new smart watch specifically designed for the iPhone, iPad, and Android user at MacWorld kicking off tomorrow. The watch is called the Starfish.

The company isn’t offering up a lot of detail on hardware ahead of the official unveil during the MacWorld conference. What we do know is that the company is promising the world’s first truly interactive iPhone and Android compatible smartwatch. The company claims that the watch is the result of patent pending technology that allows it to communicate with the iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

The watch promises interactive features and feedback that are unavailable in any other smartwatch. It appears that the majority of interactivity with the watch has to do with mirroring alerts and other information from the screen of your smartphone or other device. The watch will offer updates and alerts for incoming calls, text messages, e-mail, reminders, whether, breaking news, and stock market updates.

The Starfish watch also promises to allow you to answer calls, open text messages and e-mails, and access your music library. It will also run GPS or any other apps and has an integrated compass and G sensor. Those sensors allow the watch to gather information during workouts. The watch promises to last 24 hours per charge and there will be an SDK and API allowing users to create apps for the watch. The Starfish Smartwatch will sell for $169.

Does RIM even realize what went wrong?

BlackBerry 10 makes its long-anticipated debut today, but the official hype machine is off to a stumbling start with execs from RIM struggling to deal with criticisms around delays and how the iPhone changed the smartphone market. In a pair of interviews on different BBC programs this morning, RIM Europe managing director Stephen Bates faced understandable questions about where previous BlackBerry devices stumbled, as well as being asked where RIM has learned from Apple’s device. All didn’t go to plan, however.

In a radio interview with BBC Radio 5′s Nicky Campbell, Bates refused to address questions around the impact of the iPhone, preferring to list BlackBerry 10′s work/life balance functionality and position the OS as the platform RIM needs for the next decade. In a separate interview with BBC Breakfast [region-locked to the UK], Bates faced a similar repeated question – this time, “what went wrong” in RIM’s past to bring it from, as the executive himself argued, creating the smartphone segment to having a minority share – but again pushed the party line rather than addressing the criticisms head-on.

Neither interview paints either RIM or the BBC interviewers in a particularly positive light. For Bates, the reluctance to address what are legitimate talking points – the role of the iPhone and the missteps RIM has made in the past – suggests the BlackBerry maker may not in fact know, or understand, how the marketplace changed. As for the interviewers, the aggressive and challenging tone failed to achieve anything significant in terms of real insight into BlackBerry 10.

“There’s little to show RIM understands it’s the underdog option”

Nonetheless, while there will be more opportunities for the smartphone buying public to get information about the new platform, RIM’s opportunities to show it understands the ways the ecosystem it is in has changed are dwindling. Android and iOS monopolize the lion’s share – 92-percent – of the global smartphone market, and for all rivals like Microsoft and RIM insist that carriers, retailers, and consumers want a “third contender” there’s little to show RIM has figured out how it will sell itself as that underdog option.

blackberry_10_dev_alpha_b_hands-on_322-580x427

That’s not to say the BlackBerry 10 OS is either without merit or without its differentiators. As the company itself explained to us back in October 2012, one of the key elements of the new platform is its ability to satisfy both work and personal use, while keeping a firewall of sorts between the two. There, arguably, is RIM’s biggest education from the rise of the iPhone and from watching the smartphone market as a whole: that people now carry their phones at all times, and want them to do all things, and while BlackBerry devices of yesterday may have been fit for one half of that, they fell short in the other.

Clarity of mission is all the more important when you consider that BlackBerry 10′s success probably isn’t going to be based on its strengths as a technical platform, but instead the halo of context RIM builds around it. We’ve already seen OSes with great potential rise and fall – MeeGo is a solid example, offering a far better user-experience than Nokia had with Symbian or even Windows Phone, but still eventually sidelined – because, in part, the companies behind them lacked the clarity of message that would convince consumers and businesses that they were worthy of consideration.

For RIM, with Microsoft directly aiming for its corporate audience with Windows Phone, and the mass market already addicted to the wide array of Android devices and the consistency and “halo brand” of the iPhone, it’s time to work hard on rebuilding perceived relevance. Trying to ignore the landscape of the mobile industry today – no matter how aggressive the interviewer – doesn’t distract potential customers to the reality of the market, it only leaves you looking like you don’t know where you went wrong.

SlashGear will be at RIM’s BlackBerry 10 launch today, bringing you the highlights from the new platform.

Real Racing 2 To Arrive For Nokia Lumia Devices Soon

real racing 2 640x312 Real Racing 2 To Arrive For Nokia Lumia Devices SoonIf you own a Nokia Lumia Windows Phone device and you were looking forward to playing more games on your phone, you might be pleased to learn that it looks like Real Racing 2 will be available for download pretty soon! The game was spotted recently on Xbox360Achievements which supposedly is an indication that the game should be close to being released. Real Racing 2 is also one of the 11 exclusive Electronic Arts games that Nokia has managed to secure, and at this point in time it is unclear how long non-Nokia Windows Phone devices will have to wait before the game is available for them. This is pretty cool because we have to admit that Real Racing has to be one of the better looking games available for mobile devices these days and after being available on both iOS and Android, we guess it’s about time that Windows Phone (Nokia devices at least) got some love. In any case if you can’t wait to get your hands on the game, keep an eye out for it because presumably it shouldn’t be too long before it is available!

Philips To Exit Consumer Electronics Business

phillips healthcare Philips To Exit Consumer Electronics BusinessPhilips is a brand that many of us are familiar with on the consumer front. The company has released products such as DVD and Blu-ray players, HiFi systems, audio equipment, home lighting and the likes, but it looks like its days as a consumer electronics business has come to an end as the company has announced (via The Wall Street Journal) that they have sold off their audio, video, multimedia and accessories division to Japanese company, Funai, for a little over $200 million in cash as well as a brand license fee. According to Philips’ Chief Executive Frans van Houten, “Since we have online entertainment, people do not buy Blu-ray and DVD players anymore,” suggesting that the company has been having some difficulty addressing the needs of today’s digital media consumers.

The transfer of the video division of Philips to Funai is expected to take place in 2017, and as far as the future of the company is concerned, Philips is expected to focus their efforts in the medical industry as well as its LED lighting systems, such as the Hue LED light bulb which can be controlled via a smartphone app.
