ZTE’s 5.7-inch, 8mm-thick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC launch, we go hands-on

ZTE's 57inch, 8mmthick Grand Memo teased ahead of MWC, we go handson

Huawei may have its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate for the convenience of hiding your face, but ZTE’s also prepping its very own tabletphone to go head to head with its main rival. Dubbed the Grand Memo (V9815), this 5.7-inch 720p device made a surprise appearance at a ZTE event in Hong Kong today, and we got to snap some photos of it. The device looks identical to the P945 leaked earlier this month but packs some slightly different specs: 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (same as the more premium Grand S), 13-megapixel camera, 8mm-thick body and Android 4.1.2.

While the specs aren’t too shabby, our colleague Stone Ip said the choice of finish on the body didn’t feel as nice as the Grand S’, and the silver bezel made the Grand Memo look worse, but in ZTE’s defense it was a prototype and the design may improve in the retail version. On a more positive note, the new phone does include a microSD slot despite its slimness, and it comes with a “one-hand” T9 keyboard that can stick to either side of the screen for better single-handed typing, just too bad we were asked not to take a video of the device at the time. That said, the Grand Memo will be officially unveiled at MWC next month, so stay tuned for more.

[Hands-On] 10.1″ Xperia Tablet Z – the world’s slimmest tablet

“This is the Xperia Tablet Z SO-03E. It’s the world’s slimmest tablet, and Japan’s lightest, too. Until now, tablets have been heavy and thick, so they end up getting left at home. But this one’s light and slim enough to carry in a bag, without it feeling like a heavy load.”
“For this tablet, we’ve used what’s called the Omni Balance Design. This looks very sleek, because it eliminates all unnecessary features.”
“This tablet …

Samsung Did Not Infringe On Apple’s Patents Willfully

apple vs samsung Samsung Did Not Infringe On Apple’s Patents Willfully In the hotly contested Apple vs Samsung case, Judge Lucy Koh has finally handed down a number of the first rulings in the case’s post-trial proceedings. While Apple was granted its motion to invalidate several claims of a Samsung patent, Koh also denied Apple five others. One of the key denials was a request for a new trial that will have willful infringement on Apple’s patents by Samsung. This is a significant victory for Samsung, as having overturning the jury’s finding that Samsung acted willfully in infringing on Apple’s patents, it would mean Apple is unable to claim not double, but rather a mind blowing triple damages that were associated with the suit.

The ruling stated, “Here, the jury found that there was no subjective willfulness, and the Court agrees that this finding was supported by substantial evidence in the record. Therefore, even if the Court were to find the objective prong satisfied, there can be no ultimate willfulness determination. Accordingly, the Court need not reach the objective analysis.”

Fujifilm unveils F850EXR and F900EXR ultra-zoom compact cameras

Fujifilm has unveiled two new additions to its F-series compact camera line, the F850EXR and the F900EXR. Both cameras bring long zoom to the table, as well as lightweight, easily-pocketable compact designs, with each being hailed as a travel camera for the on-the-go consumer. We have pictures of both models after the jump.

First up is the F850EXR, which features a 16-megapixel EXR-CMOS sensor, EXR Processor II, and 20x optical zoom. With the EXR Processor II, which is said to have double the processing speed of the first gen processor, the F850EXR has a focus speed of 0.21 seconds, startup time of 1.1 seconds, and 0.5 second shot interval. Videos can be recorded in full HD at 60fps via a dedicated recording button. Sound is recorded in stereo via an integrated stereo mic.

Meanwhile, the F900EXR has some upgrades over the 850, offering a 16-megapixel EXR-CMOS II backside illuminated sensor and EXR Processor II, which offers a 1.1 second startup speeds and 0.5 shot interval. The F900EXR offers Phase Detection auto focus as part of the Intelligent Hybrid AF system, allowing for focus speeds of only 0.5 seconds.

One of the 900 model’s best features is its support for wireless photo transfer to mobile devices and computers. Both PC software and mobile apps are available for photo backup syncing to devices. Image recording is similar to the 850, offering full HD video at 60fps utilizing Phase Detection AF and a dedicated recording button. For now, there’s no word on when we’ll see these two models on store shelves.

Nintendo Q3 earnings show 3 million Wii Us sold, sales forecasts lowered again

Nintendo Q3 earnings report show

Nintendo’s Q3 earnings report is out, and it’s sold just over 3 million units of its new Wii U console (at a loss) along with 11.69 million pieces of software. The other big news is that it’s adjusted sales forecasts downward — again, after it announced they were being cut back in October. However, since the flagship console is sold at a loss, while Nintendo is predicting 17 percent lower revenue, its prediction for net income has actually moved up by eight billion yen ($87 million).

It’s not all bad news however, as it’s showing about $160 million in net income for the year, compared with last year’s losses. The 3DS has jumped up to 29.84 million sold, while the original Wii is within shouting distance of the 100 million number. Need more numbers? Carjackers Foiled In Corvette Hijack As They Don’t Know How To Drive Stick

manual fail Carjackers Foiled In Corvette Hijack As They Don’t Know How To Drive StickIf there is any proof that technology has made humankind dumber across time, this would be it. Randolph Bean of Oviedo, Fla., recently pulled his yellow Corvette over to the side so that he could text his wife safely one late Sunday night. Unfortunately, a couple of would-be carjackers who were armed with a gun came by, forcing Bean to the ground while the other person stepped into the driver’s seat.

Unfortunately, the carjacker wannabe had no idea how to start the 2002 Millennium Yellow Z06 Corvette, before the armed man told his partner in the failed crime, “It’s a stick!” The two assailants in the end decided to leave the Corvette alone, running away with Bean’s phone, wallet and keys instead. Stupidest thief of the year award winner? Don’t hold your breath just yet, as there are still 11 more months in 2013 to go before we see how far mankind has fallen in terms of intelligence due to technology. It does make you wonder whether the driving schools should make it compulsory for everyone to know how to drive stick, you know, not for hold-ups, but just in case of an emergency.

New Watch Could Help Reduce Rape In India

gps watch New Watch Could Help Reduce Rape In IndiaThe gang rape that happened in India on December 16th last year brought about plenty of national as well as international outrage, with the victim ending up dead. What else can be done to help offer a certain degree of protection to the girls and ladies who want to move around safely? The Indian Centre for Development of Advanced Computing is currently formulating plans to develop a new device, which they hope are able to eventually help reduce such inhumane crimes.

The first device off the bat? A possible wristwatch which is said to increase women’s safety as it will act as a SOS device, sending an alert to the local police in the form of a text message, in addition to having buttons that have been programmed to carry pre-selected numbers of family and friends. The watch itself will come with GPS capability, so that it can pinpoint the exact location of the girl when the message was sent, unless of course, she is in a place that does not have adequate coverage. It is hoped that mass production of these watches will not see its final sticker price exceed $50 to make it as affordable as possible across the board. Thing is, even if the police receive the alerts, are there enough manpower to arrive at the scene of the possible crime in time? What you see on the right is meant for illustrative purposes only.

Nexus 4 trots out in white, sets unicorn fans aflutter (update: more shots)

Nexus 4 trots out in white, sets unicorn fans aflutter

We’re pretty fond of unicorns white phones here at Engadget, especially rare ones like the white Nokia N9. So you can imagine our excitement when we came across this photo of a white Nexus 4 over at Phone Arena. While rumors of a white Nexus 4 have been swirling around the intertubes for some time, a picture speaks a thousand words, right? We took a long, eagle-eyed look at this image and didn’t see any signs of trickery. Obviously this doesn’t mean a white Nexus 4 is on the way — it could just be a dummy handset and / or a one-off prototype. Still, if last year’s white Galaxy Nexus is any indication, there’s a chance this is the real deal. We’ve reached out to Google and LG for comment, so stay tuned — it sure would be lovely to add this beast to our stable.

Update: The folks over at Tinhte managed to grab a closer look at the device. Hit the second source link for a full photo tour — we’ve added another shot of the back (in full glittering glory) after the break.
