PlayStation 4 announcement tipped for February 20 in Sony teaser

Rumors of the next console generation are hitting left and right as we head deeper into 2013, and today Sony may have just given us a date for the reveal of its next console. The company has released a new teaser trailer of sorts on the PlayStation Blog, and it suggests that the next PlayStation will be announced on February 20. That’s less than a month away, so the PlayStation 4 may be closer than some think.

PlayStationtease

Like all good teasers, Sony’s doesn’t give away anything. All we see are the classic PlayStation button symbols and the February 20, 2013 date at the end. The post on the PlayStation Blog is similarly short on details, but the title does invite us to “See the Future.” There’s also a link users can follow to leave their information to “Be the First to Know.” Naturally, we can’t be sure of Sony’s intentions, but it certainly sounds like the company is gearing up to announce its next console.

This event will be going down at 6PM Eastern on the February 20, and if Sony is planning to use it to reveal the PlayStation 4, it’ll probably be getting quite the jump on Microsoft. The Xbox maker has been just as secretive about its next console, but recently, Major Nelson posted a countdown clock to E3 2013 on his blog. That suggests Microsoft will reveal the next Xbox at the expo in June, meaning that Sony could have a number of months on Microsoft if it chooses to go all-in on February 20.

We’ll just have to wait and see, because you can bet Sony won’t let any new details slip out before it holds this event. We’ll naturally be covering Sony’s event, so you’ll be able to find details on whatever the company announces right here at SlashGear. Do you think Sony is getting ready to announce the PlayStation 4?

NRA Supported Universal Background Checks After Columbine Massacre

WASHINGTON — In May of 1999, under intense pressure following the Columbine High School massacre, National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre told Congress that the gun lobby supported instant background checks at gun shows. On Wednesday, back before the Senate Judiciary Committee following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, LaPierre uncomfortably withdrew his support for universal background checks.

LaPierre seemed a bit flustered this week under questioning by the senators for good reason. The NRA’s earlier support for instant background checks was not just a line that LaPierre read to the Judiciary Committee 14 years ago. It was part of an advertising and public relations campaign that the NRA organized following the Columbine massacre to show it was sympathetic to changing gun laws, according to documents and interviews by The Huffington Post.

Obama Deportation Toll Could Pass 2 Million At Current Rates

WASHINGTON — As lawmakers debate the Obama administration’s commitment to immigration enforcement, a report released last week shows that 2 million people will be deported by 2014 — more than the total number of deportations before 1997 — if they continue at the current rate.

Tanya Golash-Boza, an associate professor of sociology at University of California-Merced, found that interior immigration enforcement has expanded rapidly as border-crossings have slowed down, leading to more families being separated by deportation.

Her analysis found that 2.1 million people were deported between 1892 and 1997. From there, the rate of deportations swelled, hitting a record in the 2012 fiscal year with more than 400,000 removals. Apprehensions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement went from 10 percent of those in the Department of Homeland Security overall in 2002 to nearly 50 percent by 2011, the report says. And she found that nearly a quarter of the total deportations between July 2010 and the end of September 2012 involved parents of children who are United States citizens.

These Chinese Knockoff DVD Movies Are Hilarious

I may have a bad memory, but I don’t remember Matrix Reloaded to be about “white men wanting a stud to breed slaves.” Or Arnold Swarchenegger starring in Star Wars. Or a Tom Cruise movie called Pepe Likes Tacos. But, if you are in China, that’s exactly what happens. More »

Senator Mark Udall ‘Strongly Inclined’ To Support Chuck Hagel Secretary Of Defense Nomination (VIDEO)

Senator Mark Udall told HuffPost Live Thursday that he is inching closer to supporting Senator Chuck Hagel’s nomination for Secretary of Defense.

Udall, who has been critical of Hagel’s stance on the discrimination against LGBT service members, told HuffPost Live’s Alicia Menendez that he was satisfied with Hagel’s response to his questions on the topic during his confirmation hearings.

“I was satisfied with Senator Hagel’s answer,” Udall said. “He’s evolved in his views. I tip my hat to him. America’s evolved in its views when it comes to our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters.”

Super Bowl Ads: Controversial 2013 Commercial From Volkswagon Joins Groupon, Go Daddy (VIDEO)

While all Super Bowl commercials aim to be memorable, there are usually a few that garner attention for all the wrong reasons or tap into some heated debate.

Last year it was GoDaddy.com, Kia and Teleflora that drew criticism for their racy commercials. In 2011, Groupon was criticized for a commercial that appeared to make light of the political unrest and human rights abuses in Tibet.

Ahead of Super Bowl XLVII, Volkswagen and Coke ads have already been accused of being racist. The list of controversial 2013 Super Bowl commercials will likely grow before either the 49ers or the Ravens hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
