Billboard redesign brings charts streaming into the 21st century

Back in the old days, music charts were mostly good for hit single montages in movies about struggling bands. These days, chart-making stalwart Billboard’s looking to offer up something more, bring its services into the era of streaming media, with a redesign that harnesses Spotify, Rdio and Myspace functionality, letting users listen to the day’s tracks in order of popularity, the way they were meant to be listened to, we guess.

Acer hints at budget quad-core tablets to take on Google and Amazon

Acer‘s budget-minded Iconia B1 tablet has been turning some heads, mostly thanks to its competitive $150 price tag, but it looks like Acer isn’t stopping there. The company has hinted at the prospect of releasing 8- and 10-inch quad-core tablets sometime this year that will also be aimed at the budget market in order to take on Google and Amazon.

IconiaB1A71-346x500

According to the China Times, Acer CEO Linxian Lang spoke about the possibility of expanding the company’s tablet lineup with more size options and price points to compete with other tablet manufacturers. These quad-core tablets the he speaks of are said to be ranging from 150 to 175 Euros, which puts them at about $202 to $236 in US dollars.

While that’s certainly on par with other budget tablets currently available, the quad-core processor may make Acer’s upcoming tablets more of a bargain buy compared to the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD. Lang also discussed the company’s projections as far as sales go. Acer expects to ship 200 million tablets this year, 80 million of which will be higher-end models.

Of course, there’s no word on when these budget tablets will appear exactly, but seeing as the Iconia B1 isn’t planned for a US release, we’re sadly expecting the same thing from these upcoming slates. Either way, we’re looking forward to seeing what Acer has up their sleeves this year, and if they’ll release budget tablets that can compete.

U.S. Catholic Church And Protestant Denominations Agree To Recognize Each Other’s Baptisms

In a monumental occasion for ecumenical relations, the U.S. Catholic church and a group of Protestant denominations plan to sign a document on Tuesday evening to formally agree to recognize each other’s baptisms.

Catholic leaders will join representatives from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Christian Reformed Church in North America, Reformed Church in America and United Church of Christ at the ceremony in Austin, Texas, to sign the agreement, which is called the “Common Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Baptism.” The event coincides with the national meeting of Christian Churches Together in the U.S.A.

Currently, the Protestant churches recognize Roman Catholic baptisms, but the Catholic church does not recognize theirs. The mutual agreement on baptisms, a key sacrament in the churches, has been discussed between denominational leadership for seven years.

Occupy Wall Street Actually Not At All Representative Of The 99 Percent, Report Finds

The Occupy Wall Street movement captured public attention while speaking for the so-called 99 percent, but those who actively participated were drawn from a much narrower, more elite slice of American society, according to a new survey.

Those who described themselves as “actively involved” in the Occupy movement were overwhelmingly white, highly educated and employed, according to a new report from the Joseph F. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies at the City University of New York.

“When people are saying, ‘Occupy Wall Street is a white, middle-class thing,’ I can’t really fight them because it’s not true, but then, it’s not necessarily false either,” Michele Crentsil, a 23-year-old African-American Occupy participant said in the report.

Harry Reid: Replace Sequester With Alternative Spending Cuts And Tax Cuts

WASHINGTON — The top Democrat in the Senate says that lawmakers should redouble efforts to replace looming across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs with alternative spending cuts and tax hikes.

The comments by Majority Leader Harry Reid came amid increasing resignation among both Democrats and Republicans that the across-the-board cuts will soon take effect. The cuts were an element of the so-called fiscal cliff that was partially averted this month with the extension of Bush-era tax cuts.
