Strategy Analytics: Android claimed 70 percent of world smartphone share in Q4 2012

Estimate Android claimed 70 percent of world smartphone share in Q4 2012

Maybe it’s easier being green than we thought. We suspected Android would do well in smartphone market share when Strategy Analytics had Samsung surging ahead in the fourth quarter of 2012, but the firm’s newer breakdown of estimated share by OS shows an even larger jump for Google’s overall platform — from 51.3 percent in fall 2011 to 70.1 percent one year later. Apple was knocked down slightly to 22 percent, although it’s mostly other platforms that took the bruising. Collectively, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Phone and other platforms sank from 25.1 percent of the smartphone space in late 2011 to just 7.9 points as 2012 drew to a close. When just two companies’ platforms make up 92 percent of smartphones, it’s safe to call the result a duopoly, like Strategy Analytics does — even if others aren’t so content with the idea.

Strategy Analytics: Android and Apple iOS Capture a Record 92 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2012

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011. Android’s share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51 percent to 70 percent over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time. Android’s challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen.”

Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, “Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2012, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier. Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs.”

Lightning Strike Video Captures Moment Bolt Hits Ground In Western Australia (EXPLICIT LANGUAGE)

Australia has hosted some intense weather recently, from record heat to blankets of bizarre beach foam. Still, there’s no weather that will make your hair stand up (literally) like a good, old-fashioned lightning strike.

Cameraman Jeff Miles got a little too close to the action in Western Australia recently. The YouTube description for the video, which was posted to an extreme weather channel on Jan. 28, called the clip a “near death experience as a result of intense lightning.”

Judging by Miles’ reaction, we’d say he was legitimately scared. (Warning: Video contains some explicit language.)

Why Star Trek Phasers Don’t Exist Yet

The 21st century has been a real disappointment so far. Our robot servants top out at mediocre vaccums, self-driving cars are years away (and won’t be able to fly even when they do arrive), and we’re closer to inventing tricorders than phasers. A tricorder. Who wants a goddamn medical scanner when you could be blasting baddies with awesome handheld lasers? More »

Marco Rubio Slays Rush Limbaugh, Wins Approval Of Immigration Message

WASHINGTON — Marco Rubio’s plan to appear on conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh’s radio show Tuesday had seemed, a day before, like a bad idea. Limbaugh had bashed the bipartisan immigration reform plan released Monday by the Florida Republican senator and others, labeling it “amnesty.”

Yet there were early clues in Limbaugh’s show on Tuesday that he might not go as hard on Rubio as it appeared he would Monday. Limbaugh, reviled by the left but still very influential on the right, denied saying that he and Fox News would have to halt the new push for immigration reform.

“I didn’t say that. Did you hear me say that? I’m going to call on Fox News and others to join me in defeating this plan? I don’t recall saying that,” Limbaugh said.

Dish pulls out while DOJ steps in on Softbank/Sprint merger

The purchase of a controlling stake in Sprint’s business here in the United States has become a bit of a circus when it comes to companies stepping in with complaints here in the spring of 2013. The plan was first tipped back in October of 2012 and confirmed that same month with a 70% stake in Sprint being agreed upon for $20.1 billion dollars, purchased by Japan-based mobile carrier Softbank. Since that announcement, we’ve seen protests from AT&T, the Dish Network, and now the real deal US Department of Justice – it appears that there are going to be some delays, needless to say.

justice

Two new news bits are appearing this week in regards to this situation, the first being Dish “holding off” on their legal filing against the Softbank/Sprint merger. Before this week it was apparent that Dish was having none of the deal between the two based largely on their desire to purchase a controlling stake in the mobile company known as Clearwire here in the USA. If the deal went through, Sprint would be able to purchase Clearwire for a pre-discussed price – if the deal did not go through, Sprint would be unable to purchase Clearwire and the price Dish offered up for the business would likely go through. They’ve decided to cut their ties with the whole situation, noting with the FCC that they simply will not be participating in the next round of filings in the regulatory review – that’s it!

stopit

That note was according to Reuters while the following bit comes from ZDNet where they’ve attained details surrounding a brand new filing as made public by the DOJ. When the Department of Justice steps in on your business deal, you’ve usually got problems. In this case, it appears that, according to Sprint speaking with ZDNet, “this is a routine request.”

It would appear also that Sprint maintains that they’ll be completing the deal with Softbank by mid-2013 while their purchase of Clearwire has had no updated statuses – so we must assume that they’re good to go as well. The Department of Justice’s letter made clear that the DOJ, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI are all “currently” reviewing the Softbank deal for possible issues in national security, law enforcement, and public safety – and they’re just not done yet.

So hang tight, folks, as this deal continues to see as much or more scrutiny than it needs before it gets done (or fizzles.) Have a peek a the timeline below to follow this epic journey back to its source as well!

Phone unlocking ban cooks up White House petition

Just this past Saturday, it officially became illegal for anyone to unlock a smartphone without the carriers’ consent. Obviously, this fired up a lot of people, who argue that if they buy an unsubsidized phone without a contract, they should be able to do what they want with it. And now, it looks like there’s a White House petition going around that seeks for the unbanning of phone unlocking.

white-house

27-year-old app developer Sina Khanifar decided to take a stand, and created a petition that asks the White House to reverse the ruling and create legislation that makes carrier-unlocking legal again. The petition is already over a third of the way there, with more than 35,000 signatures. However, per the White House’s changes, it needs 100,000 signatures before it goes through.

It took under a week for the petition reach over a third of its goal, but it needs to reach the 100,000 mark by February 23 before it can be passed over to the Obama administration for consideration. While many White House petitions in the past were a bit farfetched and, frankly, kind of ridiculous, this is one petition that is worth your signature.

Hopefully the petition will reach its goal, and if it gets passed along to the Obama administration, we’d like to be optimistic and say that there’s a good chance that the administration will highly consider overturning the new law, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see until next month when the petition ends.
