Author Ayana Mathis And Oprah Talk About Character Development (VIDEO)

Oprah and author Ayana Mathis recently sat down to discuss the newest Oprah’s Book Club pick, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. In this clip from the interview, Oprah tells Mathis, “Many of the characters in your book make bad choices. As a writer, is there such a thing as making the wrong choice as a character?”

“Oh god, yes, yes,” exclaims Mathis. “That’s what you grapple with in your sweatpants all day long…. You take wrong roads all the time, and then somehow have to get yourself back on the right roads. Or you have to throw out 50 pages… because you’ve taken someone down a completely wrong path. There are a number of ways that you can make a wrong choice for a character.”

“I think you made all the right ones [in Hattie],” says Oprah.

In Communist China, Even the Cargo Jets Are Knock-offs

In 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake decimated China’s Sichuan province, killing nearly 70,000. The disaster which was compounded by the country’s lack of large cargo aircraft, which are essential vehicles for humanitarian missions, brought on by the military’s unyielding focus on fighter jets. In response to this logistical shortfall (and the disgrace of having to accept a pair of loaner C-17s, from the Americans of all people), China’s military kicked a languishing strategic air freighter project into gear and have debuted the results: a C-17, minus the performance capabilities. ‘Our America’: Lisa Ling Reports On Childhood Obesity

For the first time in U.S. history, the youngest generation is expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents — the result of childhood obesity. In the latest episode of “Our America with Lisa Ling” — entitled “Generation XXL” — Ling travels to the state of Georgia, where 40 percent of children are dangerously overweight.

In this clip, we meet Ramsey, who is 13 years old and one of the children at risk for health problems because of her current weight. “It’s frustrating… if you can’t fit into clothes,” she says. “Or you can’t do what other kids can do.”

Her single mother of three, Virginia, says that Ramsey’s weight increased by 20 pounds in one year — and that that was the tipping point for her. She has since changed her children’s eating and exercise habits, and says, “It’s not about the weight. It’s about being healthy.”

Hitler Alive And Well, Owning Liberal Magazine

The Washington Free Beacon has a report, sourced to “Washington Free Beacon Staff,” that Chris Hughes is purging Jews from The New Republic. (Occasionally the Free Beacon publishes stories too embarrassing for any staffers to be associated with by name.) The sensationalism of the article is structured in hilariously descending fashion, with each successive addition to the story draining its plausibility until nothing remains at the end.

Lesbian Muslim Unveiled: Moving Forward For Progressive Islam Values

A good friend of mine and I were in a heated debate at Starbucks—naturally—over whether or not it’s possible to reconcile Islam with the LGBTQ community. My friend Zara was outed by her strict Muslim Pakistani family at the age of 19 when they read through her diary while she was away at work one evening. The scene awaiting her arrival was ugly. No longer able to see a place for herself in Islam, she broke ties with her beloved religion—and with her family. Why do so many gay Muslims self-segregate themselves rather than modify their interpretation of their faith to be more inclusive?

Back at Starbucks, Zara struggled to explain that letting go of her faith was the right thing to do. Irritation crept into my voice as I judged her for defending her family’s stance against her “lifestyle choice.” Don’t get me wrong—Zara is not self-loathing by any means. She has lived her life openly and proudly for the past nine years. But whatever made Zara feel like she wasn’t allowed to practice her religion struck sadness in her she has never been able to shake.

Sony unveils Laser Light Source Projector, claims brightest output in the class

Sony unveils Laser Light Source Projector, claims brightest output in the class

Sony doesn’t always break ground on new technology, but it tends to go big when it does. The company’s new installation-grade Laser Light Source Projector (similar to the VPL-FH36 you see here) serves as a textbook example. While it’s far from the world’s first laser projector, it’s reportedly the first with a 3LCD laser — enough to put its 4,000-lumen brightness toward the front of the pack, and help with visibility in less-than-dark boardrooms. Details are scant beyond the projection system itself, although Sony does tout a presentation-friendly 1,920 x 1,200 resolution as well as a picture muting option that gets the show started quickly. We do know that the well-lit output will be tough to miss when the Laser Light Source Projector hits classes and offices in the summer.

Sony reveals its first Laser Light Source Projector at ISE 2013

Basingstoke, January 29, 2013: Sony has today announced at ISE 2013 that it is launching its next generation WUXGA installation projector with Laser Light Source Technology. This ground-breaking product from Sony will be the world’s first 3LCD laser, 4,000 lumens WUXGA (1920 x 1200) projector, making it the brightest projector of its kind and a first for the industry.

This new addition to Sony’s installation projector line-up follows the award winning and popular design of the VPL-FH31 and VPL-FH36 models, part of the F series which is widely considered to be the top product within its category in Europe. The chassis is designed for optimum flexibility with a clean white finish designed to blend in with its environment.

The Laser Light Source Projector is free from the worry of lamp change with its increased durability and low total cost of ownership (TCO). With newly developed BrightEra[TM] 3LCD technology, the projector has up to 20,000 hours maintenance free time depending on the projector’s environment and setup conditions. This feature, based on market feedback, is especially important in the corporate and education sectors where the projector is used for extended periods of time.

“This announcement marks an exciting shift in the market. Sony’s pioneering technology delivers on the promises made to our key partners to produce innovative products that perform and exceed market demands. Installation projectors not only have to reproduce the highest quality images but also be relatively maintenance free and eco-friendly. The Laser Light Source Projector delivers on all accounts being mercury free, offering an incredible brightness of 4,000 lumens,” said Robert Meakin, Business and Education Product Manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe.

Based on Sony’s Laser Light Source Technology, the projector incorporates lasers, rather than LEDs, to achieve optimum brightness. The white light, like traditional UHP light sources, is directed into the 3LCD engine to deliver incredible picture quality. As a result, the Laser Light Source Projector has substantially brighter images, better contrast ratios and outstanding colour stability.

The projector also features a picture muting mode which allows the user to quickly start the presentation once the mute mode has been turned off. This feature enables the smooth presentation of images with high colour reproduction. The Laser Light Source Projector also delivers amazing installation flexibility as it is tilt free with an efficient portrait mode to ensure the projector is entirely user friendly for both corporate and education markets.

SimCity for Mac arriving in spring 2013

SimCity is just about a month away, arriving on PC March 5 in the US, with a Europe release on March 8. However, this is Windows only, but developer Maxis announced that the release date for Mac is planned for sometime this spring. The company also notes that both Mac and Windows players will be able play co-op together on the same maps.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-04-at-2.51.35-PM-580x3181

The reason for the delay, according to Maxis, is that the Mac port isn’t a port at all, but a “full native version” specifically for OS X. This means that the team will be making sure that Mac players get the same experience as Windows players. However, one of the key differences is that the Mac version will be a digital download only.

As far as minimum spec requirements are concerned, Maxis didn’t give any concrete details on how much power is required out of your Mac, but the company says that they “are aiming to make the game as accessible as possible,” so any user with Snow Leopard and a Core 2 processor should be able to play the game without any problems.

SimCity will be a complete overhaul from past installments. Just from the nine-minute gameplay video that we saw a few months, the new game will include much more detail and better graphics this time around, making the city-building experience more realistic for the players. We definitely can’t wait to get our hands on it.

Porn Stars Acting Out Internet Memes: The Most Confusing-Sexy Thing You’ll See Today

“Memes I’d Like to F**k” is a pretty self-explanatory idea, really. It’s internet memes, acted out by porn stars—with their clothes on, mostly. They’re by porno house Wood Rocket, and actually, they’re probably a smart way to get wider exposure for the sex-actors. As it were. More »

Who Is At the Door? Check Your Phone.

Crowdfunding has to be one of the biggest buzz words of the last year. Kickstarter and Indiegogo really put a different spin on how to create a product. Unfortunately, many good products don’t achieve funding goals. A new type of crowdfunding site began to emerge to help move these unfunded projects along, give inventors more infrastructure and feedback while also protecting buyers. Christie Street does just that and took on a product that is now funded and slated to launch this summer.

DoorBot looks to be a next generation example of how our phones continue to integrate into and control parts of our lives. DoorBot is a wireless video doorbell that links through your home network to your phone or tablet. Included on the device are a video camera and doorbell. Rather than ringing in the house, DoorBot will ring the app on your device when activated. Whether at home or away, you will immediately see who is ringing. And similar to when a call comes in, you have the chance to speak to them or ignore them. In addition to not missing instructions for delivery people or friends dropping by, DoorBot provides a perfect deterrent for warding off unwanted solicitors. And it can even help you give an illusion that you are home to not encourage thieves.

A few months ago we wrote about Lockitron, which enables you to lock and unlock your door remotely. Combined with DoorBot you can remotely see who is at the door and choose to let them in (or not!). Shipping in July, DoorBot on its own runs $189, Lockitron $179, or sign on for the DoorBot/Lockitron combo offered on Christie Street for $339 – and enter the world of remotely controlling access to your home or business.

3-in-1 Cutlery is the King of All Sporks, Knorks, and Spifes

Looking at the assortment of combination utensils in the market like sporks, knorks, and spifes – you’d think that they’d have thought of every possible combination there is. Each of the above combines two utensils, and I’m pretty sure you’ve used at least one of them a couple of times in your lifetime: spork is a spoon and fork in one; the knork is a knife and fork in one; and the spife is a spoon with a knife-like handle.

But why limit the combination to just two utensils? This was probably what designer Krisztina Bozzai wondered, which led her to come up with the 3-in-1 utensil that’s a spoon, a fork, and a knife, simply called “THIRD.”

SpoonorkBefore you complain about how unusable it looks, here’s how it works: first, you’re supposed to use it as a spoon. Drink your soup, scoop up whatever you need to scoop – and when you don’t have any food that you can only eat or drink with a spoon, break the 3-in-1 in half.

Spoonork1

This effectively splits the utensil into a fully-usable knife and fork so you can continue eating your food the way it’s meant to be eaten.
