Amazon offering students $50 off a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 all month long

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD was the company’s leading product throughout the holiday shopping season, and for good reason. The 8.9-inch version went on sale earlier last month, but if you happened to blink, the deal was gone. However, Amazon is offering the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 to students at $50 off all month long.

Amazon Student Members with an active Prime account (free six-month or $39/year plan) are only eligible for the deal. However, the company is letting students who aren’t Prime members sign up today to take advantage of the deal. In order to become an Amazon Student member, simply sign up using your .edu email address.

The offer is good towards either the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 WiFi-only model or the 4G LTE variant. The $50 discount means you’ll spend as little as $249 on a new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, which is the same price as the 7-inch 32GB model of the Fire HD. We have to say that’s a pretty good-looking deal for a great budget tablet.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 comes in four different flavors in all. The WiFi-only model comes in 16GB and 32GB sizes, while the 4G LTE version comes in either 32GB or 64GB flavors, all priced at $249, $319, $449, and $549, respectively, after applying the $50 discount. Read our full review of the device to learn more.

Oscars Voting Concerns Could Lead To Record-Low Voter Turnout

LOS ANGELES — Growing concern that problems with the new electronic Oscar voting system could lead to record-low turnout has prompted the motion picture academy to extend the deadline for members to vote for Oscar nominations.

But next week’s highly anticipated announcements looming, the extension is only for a day, until Friday. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday any votes received after the new deadline will not be counted.

Ubuntu countdown teaser hints at touch support

If you direct your web browser to Ubuntu’s homepage, you’ll be greeted with a countdown with the words, “So close, you can almost touch it.” The countdown looks like it’s set to expire tomorrow, January 2, which is when we could see an announcement from Canonical about a possible touch-based operating system.

Screen Shot 2013-01-01 at 12.07.23 PM

A touch-based OS of Ubuntu shouldn’t be a huge surprise at this point, since Canonical has recently hinted that they’re moving towards touch-based interfaces. In a Slashdot Q&A last month, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth made it clear that a cross-device OS was in the cards, with full mobile and tablet support set for Ubuntu 14.04 sometime in 2014.

Essentially, it’s the same approach Microsoft took with Windows in Windows 8 and Windows RT, and the challenges that faced Microsoft will also face Canonical — the company must find a way to unify the OS without alienating a subset of users. While we thought that Microsoft did a decent job with Windows 8, a lot of users feel that Microsoft screwed the pooch.

Either way, we have less than a day to go before Ubuntu’s mystery is revealed, and while we obviously know what it will be, we’re interested in finding out how the company will execute the software and what the interface will look like. If you’re at all interested in a touch-based Ubuntu OS, be sure to stick around tomorrow for the official announcement.

Roboy Humanoid Robot Looks Like a Teen Terminator

A group of scientists and engineers from the University of Zürich’s Artificial Intelligence Lab has unveiled a robot called Roboy. While their intentions are good, this creepy-looking robot reminds me of an adolescent, hydrocephalic, Terminator sent back in time to destroy mankind. But that’s not what it’s designed for – the team working on the project hope that it might be a sort of blueprint for human service robots.

Eventually, the robot will be covered with a soft skin and make it more comfortable for humans to touch and look at. The design uses a series of mechanical actuators to allow the robot to move around freely combined with artificial tendons. The use of these artificial tendons allows the robot to mimic human movement.

The designers of the robot say that it is still in the construction phase. So far, the team has completed the robot’s torso, leg development, a CAD model of the entire robot, and other tasks. In the middle of December, the team announced that the robot had its face and could move its arms. To finance the completion of Roboy, the researchers and engineers have taken the unique approach of selling ad space on the robot’s body.

Samsung Smart Tango Corner Clean robotic vacuum hits Flickr ahead of CES launch

Samsung Smart Tango Corner Clean robotic vacuum appears on Flickr ahead of CES launch

There’s no doubt that Samsung’s holding its juiciest bits for the stage in Vegas, but the company has been letting a few items slip on by, with an update to its robotic vacuum line representing the latest pre-CES tease. The Smart Tango Corner Clean maintains a traditional circular design, but includes the “world’s very first pop-out brush,” which enables the bot to whip debris out of corners and otherwise inaccessible spots along its mapped-out path. On the navigation front, the new cleaner appears to include Samsung’s camera-equipped Visionary Mapping System, with a front-mounted lens. There’s also a built-in LCD for programming and error code readouts, along with a handful of controls on the top and a standard removable dust bin in the rear. There’s no hint of pricing or availability — or even a model number to speak of — but if you’re in the market for an autonomous vac, you might as well hold out on your purchase for one more week.

Reddit saw 37 billion pageviews in 2012, President Obama AMA most popular post

Reddit is regarded as the front page of the internet, and with good reason. The online social sharing community ended up receiving a whopping 37 billion pageviews in 2012, and saw 400 million unique visitors. The site also claims that there were 30 million posts added during the year, and users voted for their favorites four billion times and added 260 million comments.

reddit

The most popular post on Reddit this year was no doubt President Obama’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread. It received almost 5.6 million views alone, which is more than double that of any other post on the site. In fact, that one day saw 4.4 million page views and 1.6 million unique visitors, an unfathomable number if there ever was one.

Reddit’s massive popularity and growth is no surprise, really. The site averaged over three billion pageviews each month in 2012, which is a 50% increase from the two billion the site reported for the month of December in 2011. Chances are, the site’s popularity will only continue to grow in 2013, as more and more celebrities use the site to connect with their audiences.

Some of the other popular posts of 2012 on Reddit include What’s your “picture you can’t see without laughing”?, which garnered almost 2.5 million pageviews, What’s your favorite picture on the whole Internet?, which received 2.15 million pageviews, and what do you look like before and after makeup? Is there a real difference?, which saw 2.14 million pageviews.
