Inspiration can come from anywhere, and the classic spring snake can gag is probably where the idea for this collapsible LED lantern was born. Using a fabric diffuser and a metal spring inside, it transforms from a flashlight to a hanging glowing lantern in less than a second. And let’s be honest, there’s probably a still great opportunity for a camping prank here. More »
When General Motors and Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray last month, it received mixed reactions. Yes, it’s an amazing-looking car, and the redesign makes it more sleek than ever. However, many critics were upset that Chevrolet ditched the iconic rounded taillights in favor of a new look. Then again, this isn’t the first this has happened.
When Chevrolet was planning to redesign the Corvette starting with the 1997 model year, they wanted to stick with something conservative, which meant that a lot of design proposals were thrown out. At that time, the Corvette didn’t see a makeover since 1983, so a long-awaited redesign was definitely due, but it seems the company didn’t want to surprise too many people.
One of the design proposals that Chevrolet threw out was the one pictured above. It looks quite familiar, right? The taillights are same square shape of the 2014 model, and the quad-exhaust is all there in the middle (which showed up on the Corvette C5 actually, so that’s sort of out of the question). This particular design, though, was deemed too crazy for 1997, so it was eventually thrown out.
However, here in 2014, it seems the design is ready for prime time, and while many thought that the 2014 Corvette’s taillights came straight from the recently-redesigned Camaro, it seems that the Camaro might have actually gotten the idea from this 1997 Corvette design proposal. Plus, the 2014 model has the same overall fastback shape and the diagonal air vents towards the front. Coincidence?

An exploit was discovered last week which made it possible for anyone to access information on an iPhone running iOS 6.1 equipped with a passcode with very little effort. Days later , Apple announced it would be working on a fix for the exploit to be released as fast as possible. Today, we’re seeing Apple has kept its promise as iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 has just been sent out to developers to download.
iOS 6.1.2 was just released a few days ago to help fix issues some Microsoft Exchange users were experiencing as well as some reports of iOS 6.1 causing battery drain issues. Now that iOS 6.1.3 has been sent out to developers and beta testers, we could potentially see two new iOS updates in a single week, which we’re not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing. Either way, expect iOS 6.1.3 to be available in the very near future, which we have a feeling someone somewhere will find a problem with it as well.

John Cornyn Politely Asks Barack Obama To Join The Anti-Chuck Hagel Brigade
Posted in: Today's ChiliHere’s where the Senate left the matter of former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel’s nomination to be secretary of defense: Last week, Senate Republicans filibustered the nomination. Because: reasons. They needed more information, urgently! But first, they are going on vacation, see ya! Still, on their way out the door, there was a basic admission that when the recess was up, so was the jig — Hagel would eventually receive an up-or-down vote, and get confirmed.
Since then, the anti-Hagel forces have not enjoyed a particularly good week, what with the heaping ridicule on those who promulgated the “Friends Of Hamas” story dominating Wednesday. And now, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has announced that he’ll vote in support of Hagel’s nomination. Hagel was one vote shy of getting past the filibuster, Shelby is that one vote, and so now it’s just a wait until the Senate reconvenes.
But maybe this new gambit from John Cornyn makes sense to somebody. Today, the Republican Texas senator sent a letter to the White House asking President Barack Obama — who has known he would win this fight for many days now — to pick a new secretary of defense nominee:

I don’t always agree with the choices that Nicolas Cage makes with regards to his career, but I definitely have a strong opinion about his hairstyle – or his lack of one. Nicolas has been sporting variants of the same boring old ‘do for as long as I can remember. If it bugs you as much as it bugs me and his legions of fans and non-fans, then the good news is that there’s something you can do about it.
You won’t be able to make him change it, but you can try to convince him by showing him what he looks like with the help of a couple of dry erase markers and this handy dandy Nicole Cage whiteboard from Brandon Bird.
So you won’t be able to use it for anything else, but at least you’ll be able to have tons of fun and tons of laughs while you unleash your creativity and share it with your bestest pals.
The Nicole Cage hairstyle whiteboard is on sale for $20 on TopatoCo.

The students at ITP are constantly churning out creative projects that are unafraid to walk the fine line between art and tech. So its no wonder that Gal Sasson’s Make a Play wound up as one of the semi-finalists in our Insert Coin: New Challengers competition. It doesn’t hurt that the concept also combines two of our greatest loves here at Engadget: toys and Arduino. The name, it turns out, is actually quite descriptive. The microcontroller-driven stage allows anyone to quickly create a piece of miniature theater using handcrafted puppets and an impressive selection of buttons, knobs and switches — all lovingly handcrafted out of wood on this prototype. The control panel can move the actors using two motorized carts, cue lighting, playback voice recordings and even activate special electronics embedded in the puppets, such as LED eyes in the demo video after the break. Any action can be recorded and fed to a companion computer program, where tweaks can can be made to the automation. Honestly, sounds like the sort of thing we wish we had a as kids.
Check out the full list of Insert Coin: New Challengers semifinalists here — and don’t forget to pick a winner!
