Midwest Snow Storm Gathering Strength, Already Blamed For One Road Death This Winter

ST. LOUIS (AP) — An armada of snow plows and salt spreaders deployed Wednesday on highways across the nation’s heartland working to stay ahead of a powerful winter storm that already is blamed for one road death.

Winter storm warnings were issued from Colorado through Illinois, with as much as a foot of snow expected in several areas.

Kelly Sugden, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Dodge City, Kan., said early Thursday morning that the storm was moving a bit slower than was previously forecast but that it was “starting to get back together.”

Nina Simone Birthday: Meshell Ndegeocello Releases Cover To Celebrate The Famous Singer (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

Today is the birthday of Eunice Kathleen Waymon, better known as the high-priestess of soul, Nina Simone. The great American crooner, a broad-ranging jazz and blues singer with a contralto like no other, would turn 80 years old if she were still alive today.

Born in North Carolina in 1933, Simone produced a number of blues and gospel-influenced tunes that addressed civil rights in the South. From “Mississippe Goddam” to “Old Jim Crow,” her lyrics openly criticized the racial inequality in America, a sentiment that was echoed in her acclaimed 1966 album, “Wild Is the Wind.”

To celebrate the noted singer’s 80th birthday, fellow American singer-songwriter and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello has unearthed another song made famous by Simone — “Black Is the Colour (Of My True Love’s Hair).” The Appalachian folk song became a part of Simone’s standard repertoire, sung in the deep and muddled rhythms she mastered throughout her career.

Scott Walker Budget Proposes Cutting Public School, Healthcare Funding To Pay For Tax Cuts

Feb 20 (Reuters) – Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker proposed a nearly $70 billion biennial budget on Wednesday that combines income tax cuts with increased spending on transportation infrastructure and private education.

Walker, a first-term Republican facing re-election next year, said he would offset the tax cuts and spending increases contained in his 2013-2015 budget by redirecting some funds away from public schools and healthcare, freezing aid to local governments and selling off state assets such as power plants.

Democrats said the proposal would weaken the economic security of the state’s most vulnerable residents.

Walker, who touched off massive protests two years ago when he curbed the collective bargaining rights of public workers, said his proposed income tax cut would save residents $343 million.

“More money in the hands of taxpayers will likely drive greater demand for goods and services, which will likely lead to greater production and eventually more hiring of employees,” he said.

The proposed budget, unveiled in an address to both houses of the Legislature in Madison, included expanded state aid to private schools through voucher programs and the tightening of income eligibility requirements for recipients of publicly funded health programs.

Walker said he also wanted “able-bodied, non-elderly” people receiving food stamps in Wisconsin to be enrolled in mandatory employment training.

“I’m all for providing a temporary hand up,” he told lawmakers. “But … it should not be a permanent handout.

Democrats, who tried unsuccessfully last year to recall Walker, were critical of the proposed budget.

State Senator Kathleen Vinehout, who was a candidate for governor in the Democratic primary ahead of last year’s recall election, said, “Roads and bridges are being paid for by borrowing and raiding money that would otherwise go to schools and universities.

“These are political choices, not the choices voters in Wisconsin would make.”

Walker’s proposed budget will now go to the state Legislature, which is controlled by Walker’s fellow Republicans.

Debate on the measure is expected to continue for months.

5 Reasons Why You’re Not Getting (And Maintaining) Straight Hair

It’s taken me a very long time to embrace the way my naturally curly hair spirals and grows in different directions. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I suffer from “hair envy” every now and then. And I have celebrities like Beyoncé, Jessica Alba and Eve to thank for my sudden lust for super straight hair.

These red-carpet stunners have recently stepped out wearing straight hairstyles that make me wonder if they’re using flat irons created by NASA. Not a single strand of hair appears to curl up in spite of standing just a few feet away from hot camera lights. Just the mere thought gets me frustrated as I recall spending hours carefully detangling my thick hair, blowdrying it section by section (and going back over spots because I’ve broken into a sweat) and trying my hardest to keep this sleek look for more than five days. Yet, in spite of falling short, the appeal of straight hair remains. Am I right, ladies?

“Most women want what they naturally don’t have,” says Johnny Lavoy, celebrity hairstylist and L’Oreal Paris consulting hair expert. “Super straight hair also appears to be healthier looking, because it reflects more light. Straight hair also adds the illusion of more length, and it’s a fairly simple way to dramatically transform your look without a haircut.”
