Google Drive gets file previews, Android app now outfitted with video streaming

Mountain View has just made it easier to peek the contents of Google Drive files on the web with a brand-new preview feature. Now, users will be able to quickly view up to 30 file types (photos, videos, PDFs and more) in a lightbox overlay, and thumb through by clicking right and left arrows within the window. When it comes to documents, folks can zoom in and out, scroll through pages, and even select and copy text. If the update hasn’t made it to your account already, Page and Co. say you can expect it to roll out over the next few days. As for the Drive’s Android app, it’s been updated to let devices wielding Honeycomb or higher stream video saved on the service. According to the changelogs, the application has also been upgraded with performance enhancements, pinch-to-zoom in the presentation viewer and a grab bag of bug fixes and assorted tweaks.

Chrome gets app launcher on Windows dev preview, OS X and Linux to nab it soon

Chrome gets app launcher on Windows dev preview, OS X and Linux to nab it soon

Chromebooks have had the luxury of an app launcher for quite a while, but now Windows users can get in on the action too, provided they download the latest version of Chrome from the browser’s dev channel. In order for the launcher to appear in the taskbar, however, those running the fresh release will need to install a Chrome packaged app — an application written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript that opens outside the browser and works offline by default. Packaged programs aren’t searchable on the Chrome Web Store just yet, but folks can code their own or head to the Chromium Blog for a pair of software suggestions. Linux and Mac OS X are penciled in to receive the launcher soon via the dev channel, but there’s no word on when it might find its way into a mainstream release of Chrome. Ready to take the feature for a spin? Hit the source link to let Mountain View point you in the right direction.

‘Arrow’: Former ‘Teen Wolf’ Star Colton Haynes Debuts As Roy Harper (VIDEO)

After Colton Haynes made an unexpected departure from MTV’s hit “Teen Wolf” series, fans were wondering where he’d show up next. It looks like he’s traded one hit for another. And if his character’s name is any indication, he’ll be sticking around “Arrow” for a while. This week, Haynes premiered as Roy Harper, and promptly stole Thea’s purse.

She did some investigative legwork to track him down — didn’t know companies were so free with their customer information — and got him brought in to the police station. As defiant as he is in the comics, Roy didn’t deny what he’d done. Instead, he told a sad story about his mother being hooked on Vertigo.

The story worked; Thea didn’t press charges. But she did track him down at his home to ask for the purse back. The two had an awkward and confrontational exchange at his doorstep, with him calling her out for being a spoiled, rich brat, and her insisting there are more layers to her than that.

Nikon unveils D7100 flagship HD-SLR digital camera

Nikon has unveiled its new D7100 flagship camera, a 24-megapixel powerhouse with a variety of features and high-end specs, including wireless connectivity. Dubbed an HD-SLR, the D7100 is aimed at professionals, and is touted as offering exceptional image quality and high-definition video. The camera is slated for release next month, and will have an SRP of $1,599.95.

The Nikon D7100 features a DX-format CMOS sensor, 51-point auto focus, and an ISO range from 100 to 6400. One of the camera’s bragging points is low noise levels, as well as a fast response time. Photographers can snap images at 6fps, or 7fps at a smaller resolution. To ensure that nothing slows the camera down unnecessarily, the device supports SDXC and UHS-1 cards.

For ensuring that images are always properly framed, this flagship device features a large 3.2-inch LCD display with a 1229k dots resolution. If LCDs aren’t your thing, there’s also an OLED optical viewfinder offering 100-percent framing. Video can be recorded at 1080p and played back on an HDTV via an HDMI cable. There are Creative Effects that can be used with videos in real time to apply customizing effects, such as Color Sketch.

Said Nikon’s Vice President of Marketing, Planning and Customer Experience Bo Kajiwara, “The D7100 blends the best creative features with advanced-level functionality to give the enthusiast exactly what they want– and that’s a great shooting experience before, during and after capture, from shooting to sharing.”

Sprint Force LTE handset leaks, due March 1st from ZTE

Sprint Force LTE handset leaks, due March 1st from ZTE

Sometimes tips come out of the blue: while one of our editors was out and about earlier today, someone sent him the Sprint product page above. Turns out it’s for a 4-inch Sprint-branded Android phone, the Force, which looks like a version of ZTE’s rumored Force that will conveniently work with the carrier’s sparkling new LTE installations. Specs are middling, with Android 4.0, an unnamed 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch Gorilla Glass adorned display, 5-megapixel rear camera, 1-megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM and a 1,730mAh battery. Still, that’ll give you quick connection speeds for $50 when it launches March 1st — presumably on a 2-year contract — joining its more upmarket 4G ZTE stablemate, the 4.5-inch Flash, at Sprint.

‘Modern Family’ Misses ‘Married … With Children’ Reunion Chance With David Faustino (VIDEO)

It was the “Married … With Children” reunion that wasn’t on “Modern Family” as Bud Bundy appeared on the same show as his TV father, Al Bundy, but neither of them shared any screen time. Instead, David Faustino played an old college classmate of Claire’s nicknamed “Tater.”

Phil mistakenly took Tater as the one person to have ever break up with Claire — making Phil her rebound guy — when it was really the dashing professor at the party. Jay was too busy being a better parent to Manny than Ed O’Neill had ever been to Kelly and Bud on “Married.”

Stil, it would have been nice to see them share at least one scene. Maybe now that Faustino’s Tater is in the show’s world, he can run into Claire again, and this time she could be with her father. Even without the “Married” reunion, Screencrush enjoyed all the cameo appearances in this week’s episode. TV Equals was less impressed, using words like “flimsy” and “floppy” to describe the juggling plotlines of the week, but overall felt that the episode served the purpose of entertaining its fans.

GEO Group Wikipedia Page Controversy Erased After Football Stadium Naming Deal

GEO Group Inc., the nation’s second-largest private prison conglomerate, has until now mostly kept its brand far from the law-abiding public’s consciousness.

But this week, as the company donated $6 million as part of a naming rights deal for a college football stadium in Florida, brand image apparently became an elevated concern. Following reports in Deadspin, The Huffington Post and the New York Times on the stadium deal between GEO Group and Florida Atlantic University, a page about the company on Wikipedia suddenly came in for an extreme makeover, with all negative references excised.

A section on the Wikipedia page entitled “controversies,” which listed state and federal investigations and lawsuits claiming mistreatment of prisoners in GEO facilities, had disappeared. In its place was a new section, headlined “Quality of Operations,” which duplicated language in company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
