Sony’s Yoshida: ‘used games can play on a PS4’

In news that should keep parties going until the early morning at Gamestops everywhere, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida tells Eurogamer that used games will still play on the PlayStation 4. Despite some issues with the translation, he stated clearly that “used games can play on a PS4.” That appears to clearly put the issue to bed, despite rumors or patent misinterpretations passed around the internet recently. Now, we wait for our own chance to ask a few questions of Sony about its upcoming console like “what does it look like?”, and the competition over at Microsoft goes on the hot seat with secondhand-loving gamers.

Google’s next task for Glass? Making it look like something you want to wear

Google's next task for Glass Making it look like something you want to wear

Google’s Glass augmented reality project opened itself to a few thousand more potential wearers with the #ifihadglass promotion, but according to the New York Times it’s already addressing the question of if people want Glass. One major obstacle to introducing such a new type of product is making it look good, and the paper reports Google is negotiating with online glasses seller Warby Parker to help design better looking frames, citing unnamed sources. Of course, we ran to the counter, $1,500 in hand to get a taste of the future of wearable computing — and take first person pics of that group skydiving we’re always doing — but we can imagine any efforts to take Glass mass market will need some refashioning first.

Sony unveils PlayStation 4 specs, Dualshock 4 controller and PlayStation 4 Eye camera

It has been an eventful day for Sony, which just wrapped up its PlayStation 4 event a bit ago. Although it didn’t show off the game console, the company has released its specs, along with information about its Dualshock 4 controller and PlayStation 4 Eye camera. Check out a gallery of pics, as well as the specs and other details after the jump.

The PlayStation 4 is said to “center around” a custom GPU and (8) x86-64 cores on a custom chip. The GPU contains 18 compute units for a total generation of 1.84 Teraflops of power for simulation and graphics. There’s 8GB of GDDR5 memory offering 176 GB/second of bandwidth. Video compression and decompression is described as “always on” for seamless gaming.

The rundown of the specs looks as follows: x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU with 8 cores, as well as an AMD Radeon GPU. There’s a 6xCAV BD and an 8xCAV DVD drive, as well as one USB 3.0 port. There’s Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 2.1. Audio/video connectivity includes HDMI, analog A/V out, and optical digital output.

This is accompanied by the Dualshock 4 controller, which is an updated version of the Dualshock 3 that gamers have enjoyed for years. The Dualshock 4 features a new, sensitive six-axis sensor, plus the obvious and alluring touchpad on the front of the device. There’s a distinct tri-color LED bar on the top of the controller that illuminates with the gamer’s color, making it easier for players to locate and track their own controllers.

Finally, there’s the PlayStation 4 Eye camera system, which contains two wide-angle cameras capable of depth perception and 85-degree views. With these features, the Eye can perceive a gamer from both sides, and when combined with its four microphones, can detect the player’s voice. Even better, however, is its ability to identify the Dualshock’s LED light to identify each player and his or her position. The PS4 Eye is compatible with the Move motion controller.

MIT imaging chip creates natural-looking flash photos

MIT imaging chip blends photos with and without flash, keeps detail in noise reduction

Mobile image processing in itself isn’t special when even high dynamic range shooting is virtually instant, at least with NVIDIA’s new Tegras. A new low-power MIT chip, however, may prove its worth by being a jack of all trades that works faster than software. It can apply HDR to photos and videos through near-immediate exposure bracketing, but it can also produce natural-looking flash images by combining the lit photo with an unassisted shot to fill in missing detail. Researchers further claim to have automatic noise reduction that safeguards detail through bilateral filtering, an established technique that uses brightness detection to avoid blurring edges. If you’re wondering whether or not MIT’s work will venture beyond the labs, don’t — the project was financed by contract manufacturing giant Foxconn, and it’s already catching the eye of Microsoft Research. As long as Foxconn maintains interest through to production, pristine mobile photography won’t be limited to a handful of devices.

George Heymont: The Odd Couples

Many years ago a friend of mine asked me why, when attending gay film festivals, he didn’t see movies about people like himself and his lover. They were a happy couple, aging gracefully, living comfortably in suburbia, and blessed with a circle of loving friends. Why, he wanted to know, was he only seeing films about gay men who were suicidal drug abusers, liars, thieves, and whores?

I tried to explain that playwrights and filmmakers look for dramatic conflict as they try to highlight differences between their characters that might provoke tension and move a story forward. Although he and his lover were perfectly delightful people, compared to what producers and filmmakers were looking for, they were kind of boring. Think for a minute about the kinds of couples we see paired up on stage and screen:
