LG Optimus F5 And Optimus F7 Officially Announced

LG Optimus F5 And Optimus F7 Officially AnnouncedLG has just announced the Optimus F5 and Optimus F7, which are a couple of smartphones that intend to help incase the 4G LTE footprint for the masses. I know, I know, both of these were leaked earlier this morning before the official announcement, where the Optimus F5 and Optimus F7 will debut globally at the upcoming Mobile World Congress that is happening early next week.

First of all, the Optimus F5 would be a 4G LTE smartphone that sports a 4.3-inch IPS display, powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and a 2,150mAh battery, with the LG Optimus F7 carrying a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display alongside a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, which are accompanied by a large capacity 2,540mAh battery. Both of them will ship with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, and you will also be able to check out advanced user interface features such as the upgraded QSlide and Live Zooming, stuff that were available previously only in LG’s premium devices.

No idea on pricing, but the Optimus F5 will arrive in the second quarter this Europe, with the Optimus F7 arriving in selected markets afterwards.

Sony announces PlayStation app for iOS and Android, will expand games to the second screen

Nintendo isn’t the only gaming outfit playing around with a second screen — Sony has plans of its own. The aptly named PlayStation app promises to expand gameplay to a player’s iOS or Android device, propagating in-game maps, social networking tools or simply an easier way to access the PlayStation store. The application’s functionality sounds an awful lot like the Wii U GamePad, though Sony hasn’t mentioned if off-screen play via tablet will be a possibility. Even if that function doesn’t come to your smartphone or tablet, it’s definitely available on PlayStation Vita, which fills out the rest of the company’s second screen plans with its remote play feature. Looking for official details? Skip past the break for the relevant excerpt from Sony’s official PS4 press release.

Sony details PlayStation 4 specs 8core AMD 'Jaguar' CPU, 8X Bluray,

So we didn’t see the actual PlayStation 4 console on stage at Sony’s press event tonight, but that doesn’t mean we can’t know what’s inside it. A press release reveals that the PS4’s PC-like configuration will include an 8-core 64-bit x86 “Jaguar” CPU built by AMD, with a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 “compute units” capable of cranking out 1.84 TFLOPS to process graphics and more. Its Blu-ray drive — yes, it will still have one of those — spins at a brisk 6X (8X for DVDs) and as mentioned on stage, it packs 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM capable of 176GB/sec of bandwidth. 802.11n WiFi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, optical out and even a legacy analog AV out make up the inputs and outputs, although the potential amounts of storage are still unspecified.

Also mentioned are the new software features, which include long-awaited additions like cross-game chat, and PSN Sony Entertainment Network accounts can now connect to Facebook. Other details we’ve already heard plenty about, like its instant-on “suspend mode”, preloading of content, cloud gaming and shared game experiences. There are still many unknowns about Sony’s next game console, get filled in on the facts as they are after the break.

PS4 Eye promises to unlock your PlayStation at a glance, tips hat to Kinect

Just finished watching Sony’s “see the future” of PlayStation event? We hope you didn’t blink, you might have missed a quick reveal of the next PlayStation Eye The optical sensor was overshadowed by the reveal of the DualShock 4, but it’s nothing to scoff at — the second generation Eye features two 1280 x 800 cameras, four microphones and an 85-degree field of view. Put together, the setup promises facial recognition, player positioning and depth sensing and enhanced PlayStation Move support. The Kinect-like camera is designed to work with Sony’s new controller standard too, recognizing each player by the color of the DualShock 4’s LED light bar. Sony says the Eye will allow the PS4 to use face login, and the collection of microphones might make voice control possible as well. No word yet if the new camera device will be a PS4 pack in or sold separately, but if you’re interested in mining press releases for details, you’ll find one after the break.

ZTE and NVIDIA announce world’s first Tegra 4 Super Phone

The world is about to get its first Super Phone working with NVIDIA‘s new Tegra 4 quad-core processor, and the manufacturer of this masterpiece has been announced as ZTE. This will be the first time the Tegra 4 will be available on a smartphone in the world according to ZTE and NVIDIA, with a release time set for somewhere before the half-way point through 2013. This announcement does not include a name for the device, nor many specifications or a price, but it does let loose that one important bit – first ever!

ztewowzers

With ZTE once again joining up with NVIDIA to bring a “first” to the market, we’ve got to wonder how much of it we’ll see at Mobile World Congress (coming up in just a few days). ZTE generally brings quite a show to the international mobile event, but with an announcement set so close to the actual reveal, we can’t imagine a real bit of hardware really ready for the public so quick. Regardless, we will be seeing something big from NVIDIA and ZTE separately without a doubt.

Check our SlashGear 101: NVIDIA Tegra 4 in detail guide for more information on Tegra 4 as well – pump up your brain!

As far as this first Tegra 4 Super Phone from ZTE – whenever we do get to see it – it’ll be working with Android and will have the full-fledged NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor rather than the NVIDIA Tegra 4i we saw earlier this week. This means that the i500 LTE modem will not be integrated in on the SoC and the amount of GPU units inside will be higher as a result. While the Tegra 4i works with 60 GPU cores, the full Tegra 4 works with 72.

You’ll also be seeing the Tegra 4i in action with the Phoenix Reference Platform before too long as well. No release date has been mentioned with that device either, but we’re crossing our fingers for soon!

With ZTE bringing another hit to the market in 2013, we can’t help but hope that it’ll enter the USA this time around. ZTE is responsible for such cool devices as the ZTE Grand X with the first Tegra processor / Icera modem combo – we saw that last year at MWC as well. There’s also the ZTE U950, a Tegra 3-toting smartphone for less than $160 USD – an undeniably enticing combo.

Stick around in our Mobile World Congress 2013 portal for more information from the NVIDIA and ZTE teams in the near future – we’ll be flying in this weekend!

FCC takes step towards opening up more of the 5GHz spectrum for unlicensed use

The FCC as launched a proceeding over its plan to open more of the 5GHz spectrum to alleviate wireless Internet congestion. This is a rule-making proceeding, and although there’s still no word on when the expansion will roll out, it’s a step in the right direction. In doing this, not only could wireless congestion ease up, but speeds could also increase to 1GBps.

Earlier today, the FCC approved an NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking), to look at opening up parts of the 5GHz spectrum to unlicensed use; presently, it is reserved for government and similar use. Specifically, the agency is looking at opening up 195MHz of the 5GHz, increasing the unlicensed access to the spectrum by 35-percent.

Said the FCC’s Chairman Julius Genachowski: “Wi-Fi congestion is a very real and growing problem. Like licensed spectrum, demand for unlicensed spectrum threatens to outpace supply.” Wi-Fi congestion is particularly high as cellular carriers unload some of their tasks onto wireless networks, in addition to the growing number of mobile users and the increasing demand for data and speeds.

In addition to this issue, the FCC also approved earlier today a measure to set rules concerning signal boosters. The rules give carriers, which have complained that signal boosters can cause interference, the ability to block use of certain boosters, as well as requiring consumers to register their boosters before using them.
