Audible updates iOS app to version 2.0, adds iPad support

It has taken quite a while, but Audible has finally released an update to its iOS app that adds support for the iPad. Previous to this, the app was iPhone-only and rather difficult to use regardless, with the most basic functions you’d expect in an audiobook app – such as the ability to track progress – pretty much absent. That changes with version 2.0, which both adds iPad support and introduces a new user interface that is altogether more intuitive.

use

Users can now use the Audible iOS (version 5.0 and higher) app on the iPhone (3GS and later), iPod Touch (3rd generation and later), and iPad, giving them access to the service’s entire catalog of audiobooks. In addition to the revamped user interface and iPad support, there are a handful of new features and improvements that build on the previous offerings.

One of the biggest new features is the ability to toggle between listening and reading with Whispersync for Voice the Kindle app or a supported device. Likewise, there’s a new library filter that allows users to hide completed titles from their library after finishing them, keeping things neat and orderly and easy to sift through.

Start-up has been simplified, with users now being able to sign in with their Amazon account. Downloads are also optimized, with users being able to pull up to three hours of audio data over a mobile data network (3G and 4G). Navigation is also easier, with progress bars included on each book to make it easier to monitor how far through a book one, as well as improved search and thumbnails.

Orbitsound Releases The M Series Soundbars With Bluetooth Connectivity

Orbitsound Releases The M Series Soundbars With Bluetooth ConnectivityOrbitsound, a UK based audio company, has announced the release of its M range of soundbars.  The latest offerings are the M9 and M12 soundbars with Bluetooth connectivity and a wireless subwoofer. Both models come with Orbitsound’s propitiatory spatial sound technology.

The newest Soundbars look somewhat the same as the T series, but the M series comes with upgrades to the soundbars. The biggest update is the Bluetooth capability, allowing users to connect a smartphone, tablet or any other Bluetooth enabled device to the Soundbar. Previous models included a docking station, which has been removed. Also with the M series is a wireless subwoofer that uses a bespoke low-latency 2.4GHz connection. It has volume control included on the back of it. The M series comes with settings memory, which basically saves the volume, the source and other settings, so that the next time you plug in your favorite device, you do not have to manually change the settings.

The system comes with a Bluetooth remote control. Priced at roughly $450 for the M9 and $600 for the M12, the Soundbar is expected to hit the stores in March.

Playstation 4 Unveiled: Sony Announces Next-Generation Video Game Console

NEW YORK — Sony unveiled its next-generation gaming system, the PlayStation 4, and promised social and remote capabilities. Wednesday’s announcement gives the struggling Japanese electronics company a head start over Microsoft and an Xbox 360 successor.

The new PlayStation’s controller resembles that of the PlayStation 3, but adds a touchpad, motion control and a “share” button. The Japanese electronics giant said the console will be part of a new ecosystem focused on hardware, software and “the fastest, most powerful gaming network.”

Activision and Bungie show off Destiny for PS4

Eric Hirshberg from Activision took the stage at today’s PlayStation 4 event and is talking more about Destiny, the recently-announced fantasy title from Bungie. The game has been in the works for 10 years now, and the developer finally showed off some in-game footage at tonight’s event. Basically, Bungie’s goal with Destiny was to take the FPS and “turn it on its head again.”

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 8.00.01 PM (2)

We only saw a tiny bit of gameplay here at the event, but the developers say that Destiny will be fully compatible with the PS4, meaning that Destiny will let you enjoy the game and its content from multiple devices. Destiny will not only be coming to the PS4, but also the PS3, and there’ll be “exclusive, playable” content for just the PlayStation versions.

Bungie is calling the new game the world’s first shared-world shooter because gamers will be able to access the game and the content through the cloud via the PS4, something that will be both intriguing, as well as interesting to see in action. Overall, though, the developers didn’t reveal much about the new game, but we’ve already heard plenty within the past couple of weeks anyway.

It’s said that Destiny will arrive on the PS4 and the next-generation Xbox sometime in 2014, and since it will also be arriving on the PS3, it may also show up for the Xbox 360 as well, but that has yet to be confirmed. Since Bungie’s Halo series was so successful, Destiny may certainly have the same fate.

PS4 Is Sony’s Last Stand, And It’s Wasting It On A Tired Strategy That Ignores How The Gamer Is Changing

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 6.17.09 PM

Sony’s PlayStation 4 made its grand debut today in a presentation with all the theatrical flair to be expected from an electronics company that’s also a media company that’s also a producer and publisher of blockbuster video games. But the pomp hides a hurting heart: Sony’s FY 2012 financial results saw it swallow a $5.74 billion loss, with PS3, PSP and PS2 hardware sales all down versus the previous year. And Microsoft is playing the home media center card to perfection, hedging bets against a future where a dedicated gaming console isn’t the draw it once was.

Sony did more than unveil a next-gen gaming platform today: it answered the question of how it would adapt to this changing world. And the answer might not be what you were expecting: Sony made a point of saying it was moving away from the living room, and putting the gamer at the center of the new platform. The company then went on to talk for at least 10 minutes about hardware and specs, and after a brief interlude to discuss cloud gaming, launched into a series of gaming demos. Which, if you’ve ever seen gaming demo videos, delivered exactly what you’d expect. And that was not excitement.

There was another Killzone, which looked pretty much like the others with better graphics. There was a racing simulator that was supposedly about some innovative team play, but whose developer focused on showing suede textures more than anything else. Then there was Sucker Punch’s Infamous spinoff game about mutant, which is actually decently cool since I really liked the first two Infamous titles. There were some indie games, which were more interesting than the AAA titles if only because they offered a little variety. Then there were a bunch more games from usual suspects like Square Enix and Ubisoft, Blizzard with a Diablo III port, and Bungie’s latest. But overall the message was clear: Sony’s PS4 is an evolution, not an about-face, or a realization that being a game console might not mean what it used to mean.

Here’s a typical reaction to what Sony was showing off during the bulk of its presentation, in case you think I’m only expressing my own opinion:

Later they brought out the Move controller. That’s crazy, Sony. You’re crazy if you think the Move controller will be saved by the PS4 when across the aisle is the Kinect with its hands-free, truly innovative full body movie tracking. If you think people will build 3D sculptures with a wand with a ball on the end you’ve absolutely lost your mind. There’s something to be said for trying something different, but these are things that are already better done by existing tools, or by competitors. Cutting their losses would’ve been a better strategy with the Move.

What was missing from Sony was a discussion of anything that could’ve made it a more broadly appealing device. Sony needed the introduction of streaming media partners; cable and satellite providers willing to use it for IPTV delivery; integration that would make connections with mobile devices more than just a way to have a tiny screen for select, old games and some leftover social functions; at a bare minimum it needed a physical device, and a date beyond “Holiday 2013.” It (and we, as potential customers) needed way more than a falling back on graphics, eye candy and tech demos, which may have served the gaming industry well in the past, but which have done nothing to stem the rising tide of mobile platforms like iOS and Android.

Blizzard announces partnership with Sony, bringing Diablo III and more to PS4

Today there’s been all sorts of crazy news the last few hours regarding the new PlayStation 4. While the event is still wrapping up and we’re awaiting the good stuff, they just announced a partnership with Blizzard. The extremely popular PC game developer Blizzard took the stage and surprised everyone by announcing Diablo III and more will be coming to the PlayStation 4.

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 4.52.32 PM

It looks like Blizzard is going back to their roots, yes consoles were originally their roots. Blizzard has entered into a partnership with Sony and will be bringing many games to the PlayStation 4. One of the most popular games that I’m sure many of you are excited about is Diablo III. It will be available on both the PS3 which we already knew, and now the new PS4.

Using the PlayStation cloud service you’ll be able to enjoy classic games like Diablo III right on your PS4. Alternatively it will probably also support Remote Play for streaming to your PS Vita and more. The biggest news here isn’t Diablo III though, the big news is Blizzard has entered into a partnership with Sony.

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 4.54.36 PM

While we don’t know exactly what this all entails at this point, you can expect to see and hear plenty in the upcoming weeks and months from Blizzard. The massive PC developers behind World of Warcraft and tons of other popular titles will now be developing games for the PlayStation 4. Hopefully at E3 and PAX East 2013 we’ll learn all the details. Who’s excited?

Sony Just Had a Two Hour PS4 Event With No PS4

After showing us tons of awesome looking games, Sony straight up denied us the console. We have specs, we’ve seen the controller, but we haven’t seen the box. Or triangle, or orb, or whatever this non-existant hardware for the PlayStation 4 might look like. Oh and no price or release date, either. We don’t even know when Sony will tell us more. Sony stoked our excitement, and there’s no way to be satisfied. What a bummer. More »
