VAWA Reauthorization Will Be Taken Up By House Republican Leaders As Soon As Next Week

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders are ready to move forward on legislation reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act as soon as next week, a GOP source familiar with the plans told The Huffington Post on Wednesday.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) still haven’t sorted out whether they plan to take up and amend the VAWA reauthorization bill that passed the Senate or introduce an entirely new bill, said the source. But either way, the Republican leaders are likely to act on some kind of legislation next week, and aides in Cantor’s office have been meeting with committee staff and member offices this week in preparation, the source said.

Cantor spokesman Doug Heye said only that GOP leaders are working on having a VAWA bill ready “in the coming weeks,” and that his office has been in regular contact with GOP staffers on the issue every week for the past several months.

Bungie's Destiny headed to the PlayStation 4 with exclusive content

It wasn’t clear if Bungie’s 10-year project was headed to a next-gen console, but now the developer has made it official: Destiny is headed to the PlayStation 4. Gamers hoping to pick up the PS4 version of the title aren’t in store for an extra-long wait either, as it’ll be available at the same time the PlayStation 3 flavor launches. In order to sweeten the pot for fans of Sony’s gaming console, Bungie’s also promising “exclusive playable content just for the PlayStation community.”

ZTE Aims To Launch The First Tegra 4 Smartphones In China By The End Of 1H 2013

zte

When NVIDIA officially pulled back the curtains on its new Tegra 4 SoC at CES, it had no shortage of praise for the thing — the company referred to it as “the world’s fastest mobile processor” — but there was something missing from the announcement. Who would be using be using it?

Sure, Vizio revealed a 10.1-inch, T4-powered tablet just a day later, but there was nary a phone partnership in sight until tonight. NVIDIA has just announced it is working with the folks at ZTE to launch the first Tegra 4-powered smartphones in China during the first half of this year.

Here’s a quick refresher on the Tegra 4 in case you haven’t been keeping up with the wild and woolly world of mobile systems-on-chips. This particular SoC sports 72 GPU cores, as well a quad-core processor that feature’s ARM Cortex A15 core, and LTE support by way of NVIDIA’s Icera acquisition.

NVIDIA’s deal with ZTE honestly seems like a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong — the Chinese company is capable of crafting some nice hardware (and we’re sure to see some of it at Mobile World Congress next week), but one can’t help but wonder if NVIDIA would’ve preferred a higher-profile partner to help usher in the age of Tegra. That’s not to say that NVIDIA isn’t getting anything out of this deal though. Far from it, actually — continued buy-in from a notable Chinese OEM will only help NVIDIA strengthen its position in a fast-growing mobile market.

For now, there’s no word on exactly what ZTE devices the Tegra 4 will find itself in, but NVIDIA is awfully fond of throwing the term “superphone” around, so I’d expect something with at least a little bit of wow factor.

Meanwhile, some of rival Qualcomm’s recently revamped chipsets have appeared in high-end hardware — HTC’s new One has a Snapdragon 600 ticking away inside of it, and it may not be alone. Rumor has it that Samsung is having some heat management problems with its newer in-house Exynos chipsets, and is mulling a switch to a Qualcomm SoC for its flagship Galaxy S IV. Couple that with the high-end 800 we saw at CES and the Snapdragon 200 and 400 chipsets that just officially got the nod and NVIDIA’s certainly got a fight on its hands.

ZTE to ship some of the first Tegra 4 phones by mid-2013

ZTE to ship some of the first Tegra 4 phones by mid2013

When NVIDIA unveiled the Tegra 4 last month, there were questions as to when it would ship in a phone, or whether it was bound for phones in the first place. ZTE has settled that question with plans to be the first company shipping Tegra 4-packing smartphones. The Chinese phone builder won’t spoil the surprise by naming the devices in question, but the first models reach China by mid-2013. An LTE “super phone” is in the pipeline, ZTE says. With that fresh ground broken, we’re mostly left wondering how likely it is that these devices will cross the Pacific — as well as guessing which other companies are lined up for NVIDIA’s fourth-generation silicon.

The Future of Urbanization Looks Mesmerizingly Bleak

As more and more ozone depleting humans start crowding together, we’re going to eventually stain the entire world with concrete streets and flickering street lights. Mountains are going to glow like man-made volcanoes, rivers are going to become brown sludge and new urban cities will be carved into whatever is left of nature. This digitally created art piece by Yang Yongliang shows what that bleak future will look like. It’s mesmerizing. More »

Diablo 3 Will Be Arriving On the PS3/PS4

Diablo 3 Will Be Arriving On the PS3/PS4We’ve all heard the rumors and speculation that Blizzard could be thinking about bringing the Diablo franchise onto consoles, and it looks like those rumors were spot on! Making an appearance at Sony’s PlayStation 4 event today, Blizzard’s Chris Metzen took to the stage and revealed that Blizzard would be bringing Diablo 3 onto both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4. We’re not sure if Blizzard will be making major changes to the game for console, but right now it looks like the multiplayer mode will still support only four players and its controls have also been optimized for the PlayStation’s controllers. If you consider yourself to be a pure console gamer and have been wondering what the fuss over the Diablo 3 franchise is all about, we guess you will now be able to give it a go when it has been released. No word on when Diablo 3 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 will be released, but the game will be demoed on the PlayStation 4 at PAX East which will be held in March 2013, so check back with us then for the details, or you can head on over to Blizzard’s website for the details! In the meantime who’s excited? Granted Diablo 3 isn’t exactly a “new” game per se, but bringing it onto the console might be interesting.

Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto announces that he has a Final Fantasy PS4 announcement for E3

What a tease. Brand director Hashimoto-san, who’s worked on the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and a raft of Final Fantasy titles over the years, took to the stage. And what did he have to tell us? Could Square Enix be working on yet another Final Fantasy title for Sony’s new PlayStation 4? Well, yes. Naturally. But that was about it, adding that they are “preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title. Please be excited for E3 this year.” What’s another few months? Right?

Square Enix shows real-time rendering at PS4 event

This week the PlayStation 4 event, Square Enix’ Chief Technology Officer Yoshihisha Hashimoto spoke up about the excellence of the system as it works with their own Luminous Studio. This next-generation technology has been presented as a game-changing push for graphics and real-live action that, like many of the presentations we’ve seen today, blurs the line between cinematics and gameplay. A demonstration was shown of this engine in action with a rather odd storyline of monks with lightning powers facing off against gun-toting violence-tossers – and so very many camera angles ensued.

This announcement comes on the same day as Square Enix released info pertaining to their new title Murdered: Soul Suspect. That game will be released for the PlayStation 3 while the PlayStation 4 releases from the development company remain under wraps – for the most part.

Square Enix’ own Sinji Hashimoto, brand director for Final Fantasy, stood on stage speaking about – you guessed it – a new Final Fantasy title. While he didn’t give specifics on the title’s name nor its content, he did suggest that more information would be released at E3 2013. Tune in then!

Have a peek at the timeline below for more information on the PlayStation 4 and everything included in its release. This event has covered a collection of new games as well as some rather interesting information about the cloud gaming capabilities of the system – and showed of the controller, too!

Capcom shows off new Panta Rhei game engine for PS4

Here at Sony’s PlayStation 4 event in New York City, Capcom has made an appearance and is showing off its new game engine which they’ve code-named “Panta Rhei” for the time being. The company showed off a new game but it appears to be in the very early stages at this point. Capcom showed off and demoed the new game engine by demonstrating what the graphics look like and the potential behind the engine.

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 7.33.09 PM (2)

We’re only seeing snippets from the engine, including very detailed faces, realistic fire, and good-looking environments with great lighting. Capcom then showed off some gameplay from a new game they’re working on. The working title for the game is “Deep Down” and it looks to be a fantasy/adventure game of sorts.

The game includes dragons, and of course fire for the full effect. The dragon we’re seeing is extremely detailed and the lighting coming from above also looks really impressive. Of course, details at this point are scarce, but the company says that “Deep Down is being developed in parallel with the Panta Rhei engine.”

Since the game seems to still be in development, we’re not quite sure when Capcom will launch the game. However, we probably won’t see until 2014 at least, so if you were looking forward to grabbing it off the store shelf any time this year, you’ll most likely be disappointed.
