Republic Wireless drops Motorola Defy XT price to $99

Republic Wireless is one of the new kids on the block when it comes to offering pre-paid wireless service, but it’s also one of the most competitive. Republic Wireless offers its customers unlimited talk, text, and data for only $19 a month; no strings attached. However, it encourages its users to use Wi-Fi whenever they can. The Motorola Defy XT that Republic Wireless sells has a hybrid technology that allows users to make calls or texts though their Wi-Fi network, similar to that of T-Mobile’s Wi-Fi calling. If you can’t connect to Wi-Fi, nothing bad will happen, you’ll just be utilizing Sprint’s network.

Republic Wireless drops Motorola Defy XT price to 99 dollars

Republic Wireless has some great news for many of its potential customers. The mobile service company knows that the $249 price-point for the Motorola Defy XT is a bit high, especially for a phone of its caliber, so it’s now offering the device for only $99. There’s one caveat however. If you purchase the phone for the $99 price-point, you’ll have to pay $29 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data, which in the long run will cost a lot more.

The Motorola Defy XT is a less-than-stellar smartphone. It features a 3.7-inch LCD display, 1GHz single-core Snapdragon S1 processor, 1GB built-in storage, 512MB RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera, 0.3MP front-facing camera, and Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread. It’s not very appealing, especially to tech fanatics. The phone is of course popular to people who want a super-cheap wireless service plan and could care less about the specs of their smartphone. As long as it works, everything’s fine.

Republic Wireless says that over a course of two years, a family of 3 can save $2,715 over 2 years on its $19 a month plan. They also say that with the $29 a month plan, the same family can still save up to $2,445. They compare it to the $195 a month plans offered by “leading brand” competitors, which ultimately costs the family a total of $4,830.

The three maps offered in the download pack include Landfall, Monolith, and Skyline. Landfall is a map set on the world of Tribute in a massive city that has been destroyed by war. Monolith is set on a Forerunner monument adrift in an asteroid belt. Skyline is set on the rooftops of new space tether construction. All of the maps are small to medium scale and are designed to encourage close-quarters combat.

The new gameplay mode included with the map pack is called Infinity Rumble and will be exclusive to this map pack for a limited time. This play type is a free-for-all where players can earn personal ordinance, awards, and style points for their kills.

The Majestic Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points ($10 USD). Players who purchase the Halo 4 War Games Map Pass or Halo 4 Limited Edition will receive access to both the Crimson and Majestic Map Packs as well as the final map pack when it releases in April at a 15 percent savings compared to purchasing them individually.

Record-breaking 320-gigapixel panorama of London is a cause for celebration, vertigo

320gigapixel panorama of London

While the Shard might be the new darling of London’s skyline, the BT Tower’s still got a few tricks up its sleeve — such as this record-breaking 320 gigapixel panorama of the English capital. In total 48,640 images, shot with four Canon EOS 7D cameras were stitched together to create this 360 vista. Want a little more perspective? The press info claims that if this were a physical image, it would be almost as large as Buckingham Palace — or in more concrete terms — 60,000 times larger than an average iPhone photo. Of course, what good would a gigapixel image be without a where’s waldo-style hunt? So, UK residents who have a keen eye can try spotting BT’s Buzby mascot for the chance of winning some prizes. Us? We’re just trying to hunt down a cab. Set your sights on the source for big picture.

BT TOWER BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR PANORAMIC PHOTO
To see the gigapixel image and share your favourite views of London visit: www.btlondon2012.co.uk

An amazing image of London taken from the top of the BT Tower has set a new record for the world’s largest panoramic photo. The image shows a full 360 degree view of London in incredible detail.
The 320 gigapixel image, taken by expert photography firm 360Cities, comprises 48,640 individual frames, using four, state of the art Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters, provided by Canon. The cameras were driven by high end Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads, from the Clauss company in Germany. The individual images have been stitched into a single, gigantic panorama over a period of weeks by a powerful Celsius R920 workstation, provided by Fujitsu Technology Solutions Europe.

It is the first time that an image of this magnitude has ever been attempted, and it took several months to create due to the scale of the endeavour. If printed at normal photographic resolution, the BT Tower panorama would be 98 meters across and 24 meters tall, almost as big as Buckingham Palace. In comparison, the last record attempt for a London panorama was 80 gigapixels, taken from Centrepoint in 2010.
The images were taken after the end of London 2012, the first digital Games. Londoners, tourists and those who work in the capital are now being asked to share their favourite views of the capital, as a permanent record of London’s year in the global spotlight.

As the official communications services partner for London 2012, BT played a vital role in ensuring the Games were the most connected ever, with millions of people enjoying sharing their experiences of the sporting and cultural action via social media. BT Tower played its part in the celebration, sharing news of every single medal won, live stats and scores on its giant 360 degree LED screen.
Suzi Williams, director, BT Group Marketing & Brand, said, “The BT Tower is such an iconic London landmark, and became a focus for the capital’s celebrations in 2012, what better way to capture that remarkable year than with a full panoramic photograph taken from its roof. This isn’t just a world record for the BT Tower, it’s for London and the people who live, work in or visit the capital. Take a look, and share your favourite London places and landmarks.”

Steve Hercher, director, 360Cities, said, “We were honoured to be chosen by BT to attempt this world record panorama and make our own contribution to commemorating the wonderful London 2012 Games. So many unknowns and variables had to be addressed in the planning of this unprecedented shoot, really the first of its kind. Software and hardware were pushed to the limits, and rain, wind and other potential stumbling blocks had to be dealt with. Our photography team of Jeffrey Martin, Tom Mills and Holger Schulze did an amazing job and not a single individual frame from the more than 48,000 planned was missed.”

Rainer Fuehres, Head of Consumer Imaging Group, Canon Europe, said: “The goal of empowering people to take the next step on their personal photographic journeys drives every product we create, and this breath-taking image truly takes this philosophy to the extreme. Since its launch, the EOS 7D has caught the imagination of enthusiasts around the world so we were pleased to support such an exciting and challenging project with a camera that so many people are using to capture their own moments of inspiration.”

Also, our old friend Buzby is hiding in the gigapixel image too. Find him, and you could be one of three winners in our competition. People are selected at random, the first winner will receive an iPad, a year’s free broadband, and a trip to the top of the BT Tower to see the view in person. Second and third place win an iPad. Full terms and conditions, please see http://www.btplc.com/gigapixel/

Apple chairman says it’s “weird” without Jobs, but last quarter was still “phenomenal”

It’s been roughly 16 months since the passing of Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, and the chairman of the company’s board of directors, Arthur Levinson, says that it’s been “weird” not having Jobs around. Even though the company has released several new products since the co-founder’s passing, such as the iPad mini and the iPhone 5, Levinson says that it’s been tough to ignore Jobs’s absence.

arthur-levinson

Levinson has been on Apple’s board of directors since 2000, and was a close friend of Jobs. He says he’s still not to the point where he walks into boardroom and doesn’t miss Steve. He even admits that he can’t even finish Jobs’s biography, saying that “the Steve Jobs that was in the public eye was not, for the most part, the Steve Jobs that [he] knew.”

However, Apple reported $13.1 billion in profit and $54.5 billion in revenues last quarter, in which Levinson describes as “phenomenal.” And while the board gets to see products anywhere from 6 to 18 months before their launch, Levinson says that the board doesn’t really have much say into Apple products, saying that “ultimately, the board is there to hire and fire the CEO.”

Of course, after such a great quarter this time around, it doesn’t look like Apple has any plans to fire its current CEO, Tim Cook. Jobs left Apple in great hands, being high up on the executive list, Cook was a good choice to take over the Apple helm, and has so far led the company as well as anyone would’ve expected.

Here Comes The Next PlayStation! Join Us Live At 6pm Eastern/3pm Pacific For The Sony Event Liveblog

6_sony_logo_w

The war for your living room is about to heat up. While Microsoft is still keeping its own next-generation console under lock and key, rival Sony is gearing up to take the stage in New York City and show off exactly what it’s been working on for the past few years. Naturally, we’ll be liveblogging the whole thing starting at 6PM Eastern/3PM Pacific tonight.

Like nearly every other major hardware release in recent memory, the PlayStation 4 (or whatever it’s going to be called) has been the subject of scads of questionable rumors and clandestine leaks. Curious code name? Check. Preliminary glimpses at hardware? Check. Unnerving (and hopefully unfounded) reports that the console won’t play nice with used games? Sadly, check.

Even now, the rumor mill persists — Sony may push its next-gen console out the door as soon as November (with the ability to control it via smartphone, no less) if a new report from Kotaku holds water. Still, for while we know (or think we know) about Sony’s plans for tonight, expect the company to whip out a few surprises to keep the masses planted firmly on the edge of their seats.

That said, at this point it seems highly unlikely that Sony will pull back the curtain on everything it’s working on, if only because of its sketchy track record with keeping promises made on stage. One need only look at the company’s original PS3 announcement to see that some of the experiences that Sony promised it would bring to the table just haven’t materialized (or at least, haven’t materialized in the way we had hoped).

Either way, Sony’s little shindig in Gotham tonight is going to be one to worth listening in on. To stay abreast on all of Sony’s big announcements, keep your eyes on our PlayStation Meeting event tag here.

Twitter launches Advertisement API

Twitter has just launched its new advertising API. The new ads API is designed to help marketers get their ad campaigns out to the right type of audience. This way, Twitter can help create more relevant advertisements for both marketers and users alike. Twitter states that “our focus has been on delivering better ads for users, not more ads”, because more ads would mean a lot of angry Tweeters.

Twitter launches Ads API

There are 5 initial partners who have implemented Twitter’s Ads API into their marketing program. This list includes Adobe, HootSuite, Salesforce, SHIFT, and TBG Digital. By advertising using the marketing campaigns from these companies, marketers will not only be able to get their ads out through the company’s existing marketing program, but also to Twitter’s 200 million users as well.

The new API system will also be more targeted, providing Twitter users with ads that are most relevant to them. This new system was tested with the five partners back in January, and over several weeks, the companies were seeing very positive results. Adobe’s media optimizer was able to increase Adobe’s number of followers from 2 dozen new followers a day to about 400 new followers a day. By the end of the test, there was a steady rate of 115 new followers per day for Adobe.

Twitter is looking for new partners to add onto the list, and have placed an application on their blog. In the near future, you should see more promoted tweets, and more promoted accounts, but they should appear based on your interests. Twitter is also looking to launch a “promoted products” feature in its advertisement API soon.

Kinect 2.0 For Xbox 720 Specifications Leaked

Kinect 2.0 For Xbox 720 Specifications LeakedNew information about Kinect 2.0 has been leaked. The device will be shipped with every Xbox 720, whenever that is launched. However the specs haven’t been drastically changed.

The Kinect 2.0 is now rumored to have a new sensor for infrared detection. This will change the depth resolution to 512×424. The view field will be increased to 70 degrees horizontal and 60 degrees vertical. The Kinect 2.0 will sport a camera with a resolution of 1920×1080 and will have 6-bit YUV. Video stream will be at 30 fps. The Infrared detection sensor will work better in situations with poor light as well.

The new Kinect will come with USB 3.0 instead of USB 2.0. The device will be wired, and will reduce latency time from 90ms to 60ms. The far wider viewing angle will give the device the ability to detect 6 players, as well as removing the need for a tilt monitor. Players will no longer have to worry about cramping up and the device will have the ability to work around furniture as well. Also people of short or tall height will be able to use the Kinect just well. If all these features will be a part of the Kinect 2.0, then it might be able to give stiff competition to competitors of the Xbox.
