We knew way back at CES that Qualcomm had a few lower-end chips up its sleeve, but now it’s official: the Snapdragon 400 and 200 have been formally detailed in a company blog post thrown up today. Following in the footsteps of the high-end Snapdragon 800 and 600, these units are being aimed at “the mid-tier and entry level smartphone segments.” The 400 options include dual Krait CPUs running at up to 1.7GHz per core, quad ARM Cortex-A7 CPUs humming along at up to 1.4GHz per core, and an Adreno 305 GPU. You’ll also find support for TDSCDMA, DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps), 1x Advanced, W+G CDMA, and multi-SIM capabilities of Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS) and Dual SIM, Dual Active (DSDA), as well as support for up 13.5 megapixel camera sensors, 1080p video capture / playback and Miracast wireless display tech. For the number nerds, Snapdragon 400 processors now include the following part numbers: 8226, 8626, 8230, 8630, 8930, 8030AB, 8230AB, 8630AB and 8930AB.
As for the 200, you’ll get quad ARM Cortex-A5 CPUs at up to 1.4GHz per core, an Adreno 203 GPU, HD video playback, GPS, LPDDR2 RAM, multi-SIM support and the ability to handle up to 8 megapixel camera sensors. Snapdragon 200 processors now include the following part numbers: 8225Q, 8625Q. Unfortunately, pricing is being kept under wraps, and it seems that Qually is going to leave it to its wondrous partners to actually announce new hardware that’ll be powered by its latest duo. With Mobile World Congress kicking off in a matter of days, something tells us you won’t have to wait much longer for the nitty-gritty.
For all the jokes, pornography addiction is a real and actual addiction. Really. Stop laughing. I’m serious. No, it’s— Look. Porn works like any other addictive substance: It re-wires your brain in ways that make you need it, and probably proves harmful to the rest of your life. (See update below) More »
Let’s face it: neither TracFone nor its Net10 badge are known for adventurous phone selections, let alone dipping into Windows Phone 8 devices. Color us surprised when Huawei’s Ascend W1 not only surfaces at the FCC — the phone maker said it planned a US launch — but is explicitly labeled as coming to a TracFone brand, most likely the smartphone-friendly Net10. There’s no shocks at support for the budget carrier’s HSPA frequencies, then. While FCC filings don’t clue us in as to prices or ship dates, the choice of network suggests the Ascend W1 won’t cost much off-contract when it crosses the ocean.
Tonight is the big night for Sony, with a rather solid expectation of the PlayStation 4, a new set of controllers and functionality to with it, and a swath of new game announcements to boot. What we’re going to do for you here and now is make it all real simple in a guide that’ll get you pumped up and prepared for the event [6PM EST right here on SlashGear]. It all begins with what we’re expecting the actual console to present – and yes, we are expecting a new console.
PlayStation 4: a whole new machine
The next-generation console from Sony is being tipped to be a lot of different things, so before you jump in here, know this: the lot of these tips are rumors. Unless it’s written here specifically that we’ve got confirmation of anything, you’ll want to follow the link back to the post where we first encounter each bit of information. Take everything here with a salt block. Also remember that Sony has promised commitment to the PlayStation 3 through the year 2015.
With Microsoft’s own Xbox 720 hot on its heels, Sony will likely set a release date for sometime inside November. There you’ll find a remote control for TV-related content and a new set of wireless controllers as well. You can also expect pricing on the PlayStation 3 to be slashed almost immediately after the announcement of the PlayStation 4 as well as surprisingly low prices coming with the PS4 itself.

We’ve seen more than one PlayStation 4 controller leak with a rather similar-looking overall body to the classic PlayStation controller design. The big differences will be in touchpad controls not unlike what we’re using currently on the PS Vita which, also, has seen some price slashes as of late. This touchpad tip has come more than once.
Also take note that the PlayStation 2 is now no longer being manufactured. The code-name for the PlayStation 4 has been tipped as “Orbis” several times over the past few months and has been suggested to be working with an AMD processor. We’ve also seen a rather unbelievable tip for a Sony PlayStation EyePad for 3D control of the PlayStation 4 – not to mention the Dual-Shock/Move hybrid that, once you see, you’ll never be able to un-see.
Software Features
You’ll be seeing some backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4 that’s entirely virtualized. In this case that means that you’ll be able to play PlayStation 3 games and legacy games galore, but they’ll all be downloaded from the cloud in one way or another. You can expect Gaikai technology to be in full effect for streaming content as Sony picked them up last year. PlayStation Home Arcade should give you some more clues on this futuristic universe – sort of like a microcosm.
The Sony Entertainment Network Online Store has been ramping up with games, movies, and more and will certainly be re-addressed at the event tonight. The PayPal bump for the PlayStation Store earlier this year also points toward larger anywhere-purchase strategies for Sony. There’s also a rumor of a Sony online TV service launching soon.
The one-owner-only rumor for games on the PlayStation 4 rages on – that one’s still a toss-up, mind you – see the discussion on this in the “Opinions” section below.
Games
You will be seeing Destiny on the PlayStation 4 after it hits the PlayStation 3. That’s all but confirmed by everyone and their mother now that a legal document was made public surrounding a case that involved Destiny content and the companies that will work with it. Have a peek at this Destiny trailer and freak out about it!
One game you can expect will not be optimized for PlayStation 4 is Grand Theft Auto V – its creators have specifically addressed the idea that they’re waiting for the PS4 release and have said no way! You can expect The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt though in all its REDengine3 glory.
The event starts at 6PM Eastern Time – that’s New York City time, if you did not know. If you’re living in Minnesota like your humble narrator, you’ll be tuning in at 5PM (CST), and if you’re in England, you’ll be tuning in at 11PM. Over in California you’ll be seeing this event at 3PM (PST). We’ll have the whole lot of announcements ready to rock as they pop up straight from Sony right here on SlashGear – don’t miss it!
Maybe it’s a little too particular to complain about your gadgets not getting the exact kind of charge they’re supposed to get. Oh well. The Kopi KBAR power strip fixes that issue with with a switch that lets you change the wattage when your phone’s juicing up. More »
It was sometime last week when the whole world was shocked as a 10-ton meteor actually bore down on Russia, and injured nearly 1,000 people in its fallout upon landing – or rather, crashing into Russian territory. Having said that, you can also say that fans of South Korean sensation Psy will have a piece or two to counter that. Basically, the Russian meteor has broken new records on YouTube as well as DailyMotion, where collectively, all eyewitness meteor videos uploaded to both online video services have picked up over 130 million views throughout the weekend – at least, according to social analysis service Visible Measures.
This is the highest rate of viral growth ever recorded where an online video event is concerned. Visible Measures have identified over 400 videos which were uploaded since last Friday, and some 160 of them have already passed the 100,000 views mark. The winner is far out in front at 26.7 million views and counting, but it still has a long way to go before being able to smell the 1 billion views mark of Gangnam Style.
LivingSocial Inc. has just received another $110 million from its current group of investors who still have hope in the daily deals company. The investors are still fighting for LivingSocial, despite the whole $650 million net loss that it reported in 2012, as well as the $558 million loss it reported in 2011. The company had to lay off around 400 employees back in November, as well as its Senior Vice President, Dickson Chu, back in July.
LivingSocial CEO, Tim O’Shaughnessy sent an e-mail out to all of his employees saying that the $110 million investment will be used to “build our reserves, solidify our long-term plans and execute against our vision for the future”. This should provide a boost in morale for its employees, because if its investors are still willing to bet on it, there might still be hope yet.
The list of investors who shelled out $110 million wasn’t released, but Amazon could have been on that board. Amazon has a 30% stake in LivingSocial, and for one of the most successful e-commerce sites, it’s going to do its best to make sure its investment doesn’t go sour. O’Shaughnessy did say, however, that LivingSocial had multiple options for funding.
O’Shaughnessy has high hopes for this year, and has stated that by Springtime, LivingSocial will begin to see profits. LivingSocial isn’t the only daily deals site that’s having it rough. Groupon, the other well-known daily deals site, who 12 months after it went public, reported that their IPO pricing of $20 plummeted 88%. Hopefully with this newly acquired money, LivingSocial will be able to get itself out of its slump.
Asus has a first today – having announced the TUF Series Sabertooth 990FX/GEN3 R2.0, which is touted to be the first AMD-based motherboard in the world that will carry PCI Express 3.0, allowing you to include next generation high performance graphics cards inside. In fact, you can carry up to a trio of DirectX 11 graphics cards with 28nm GPU technology within, where these can be set up via NVIDIA SLI or AMD CrossFireX. I guess gaming and performance enthusiasts will find the Asus Sabertooth to resonate the most with them, and with the famous Asus TUF Series thermal design, you can be sure that overheating is not going to be on the list of issues to contend with.
Similar to all other TUF Series motherboards, the Sabertooth has also undergone military and server-grade testing in order to make sure of its absolute stability, reliability, and longevity. Other features include a quartet of DIMM slots, Northbridge and Southbridge, independent and automatic fan speed control, and of course, a five-year warranty for that added peace of mind.
We have seen George Lucas more or less release his Star Wars cash cow for all it is worth – wait a minute, I take that back. Otherwise, he would not have done Episode 1 in 3D. But I digress, does the same tactic work when it comes to computer gaming peripherals? Razer thinks so, having re-released their range of StarCraft 2 peripherals ahead of the the Heart of the Swarm expansion, hoping to ride on the coattails of the game’s popularity to boost hardware sales along the way.
Just what kind of action packed hardware are we talking about in this re-release? Well, the range will include the Razer Spectre StarCraft 2 Gaming Mouse, the Razer Marauder StarCraft 2 Gaming Keyboard and the Razer Banshee StarCraft 2 Gaming Headset. I suppose it would make the avid StarCraft fan feel as though life is “perfect” with all of these in tow, and if you still lose out in multiplayer games, remember this – it ain’t the hardware’s fault, man. Live with it. [Press Release]
If you happen to be working on a tight budget each month, but are seriously in need to a spanking new smartphone because you accidentally dropped your last handset into the toilet bowl and have it swim with the fishes, then Acer might have a possible solution for you, with the bank account friendly Acer Liquid Z2. Touted to cost you anywhere from 100 to 130 Euros when it is released as an unlocked device in Europe, the Acer Liquid Z2 will at least be powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice – meaning, you need not fret about not being able to enjoy Project Butter and its smooth interface.
As for the other features in the Acer Liquid Z2, they are functional at best, with a 3.5-inch HVGA display to greet your eyes, accompanied by a rear facing camera, 512MB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, A-GPS support, an FM radio, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and SRS Sound. No idea on whether it will make it across the pond after its European release.
