Solar Powered Copter

Solar Powered CopterWe have seen our fair share of devices that run on solar power in the past, but surely a solar panel that flies? That takes the cake, at least for now. A group of students at Queen Mary University of London have a vision to develop a solar-powered copter, which would definitely offer something that remote controlled toys which fly are unable to deliver in this day and age. Right now, existing remote controlled flying toys are subject to the law of diminishing returns, where you spend more time charging said toy than flying it, no thanks to the energy intensive requirements.

Perhaps with the help of a solar-panel built into the flying machine itself, it might help offset some of the energy consumption in-flight, and reduce the overall recharging period. Of course, keeping yourself and the kids entertained would not be the best way of making use of such an idea, as other more practical functions include delivering emergency power charges in the field, or to have a bunch of these function as some sort of portable solar array whenever a group of you are spending time in the great outdoors.

DaVinci Robot Minimizes Pain And Scarring During Surgery

DaVinci Robot Minimizes Pain And Scarring During SurgeryThe closest thing we have come to a robot surgeon associated with the name “Da Vinci” was covered nearly four years back, but this time around, there s another surgical robotic system known as DaVinci which will be able to perform gallbladder surgery on a patient, and best of all is, it will leave virtually no scarring at all, and even better news, minimal pain. According to a general surgeon, Dr. Khurram Kahn, “The DaVinci System is basically controlling the instruments and the surgeon is sitting on a console away from the patient and controlling the robot.”

DaVinci might have been around for a number years, and the one we are referring to today is an improved version thanks to the recent advancements made in the field of robotic surgery. Apart from boasting more precise control over the instruments, the user will also have a stable platform to work with alongside 3D vision. In fact, it takes a single incision to get to the gallbladder, cutting down what used to be up to 8” long to a matter of 2cm, is worth a mention.

Kia and DC Comics create a Superman car

DC Comics and Kia have both joined forces to bring you a crazy, and very detailed new car known as the “Optima Hybrid Superman One”. The Optima combined with the Superman details are supposed to emphasize that when you’re driving this car, you’re also saving the world, at least by reducing your carbon footprint. This car was on display a little over a week ago at The Jace Hall Show.

Optima Hybrid Superman One

The Optima Hybrid Superman One features a pretty intricate design. Plastered on the hood of the car is, of course, Superman’s logo, and on the back windshield you have a very detailed drawing of Superman himself, probably to emphasize that if you buy this car, Superman will have your back. The car is mainly covered in dark, blue body paint with accents of red and maroon detailing parts of the car’s front, rear, and windows. The Superman car also features red LED lights underneath the automobile to make it seem like you’re just one, red blur when you’re zipping away at night.

The interior of the car is when things start to go a bit downhill. However, if you love light-blue, you’re gonna love this. The interior is mostly decked out in light blue, with gray accents all around. The Superman logo is plastered on all of the car seats, as well as your car horn.

Kia and DC didn’t collaborate just to make a Superman car. They also created many more cars based on the entire Justice League. They created cars based on Batman, The Flash, and Green Lantern, and out of all of the cars, I think I would say that the Batmobile would be the only one I’d be willing to drive. The others are too gaudy. These cars were made in order to draw in donations for DC Comic’s “We The Pledge” charity. All of the proceeds go to the children in the Horn of Africa, who are suffering through both a drought and famine.

Never-Before-Seen Video Shows Fire Raining On the Sun

“On July 19, 2012, the Sun produced a medium-size solar flare,” NASA says on this new video captured by its Solar Dynamics Observatory, “what occurred with the flare was amazing.” It’s true. It’s amazing. Fire started to fall down like rain—a hell waterfall many times the size of planet Earth. You have to watch this uncanny document for yourself. More »

iWatch Leak Could Signal Desperation On Apple’s Side

iWatch Leak Could Signal Desperation On Apple’s Side What do you think of news, or rather, rumors, of Apple’s supposed iWatch? I suppose if there is a company that could reinvent the wheel, most folks would place their bets on Apple, but with their recent stock price going south while rival’s Google breaks the $800 mark quietly without any fanfare, perhaps it is time to explore the possibility that Apple planted leak of the iWatch on purpose. Consider the facts – three major news organizations got the scoop within a space of a few days between each other, but the scoop is more or less empty rhetoric, without any concrete information concerning the iWatch revealed other than the fact that Emperor Palpatine, er, I mean, Apple is behind it.

Could it be a strategy by Cupertino to tell the world that they are working on a smart watch, since whispers of a similar device by Samsung has already hit the news in January itself? At least one analyst claims this was done “out of desperation” on Apple’s part to show the world that they do not depend solely on the iPad and iPhone to survive. We are not quite sure what to make of the 100-strong iWatch team, though.

Alien Skin Eye Candy 7 Adds Realistic (and not-so Realistic) Effects to Photoshop

I’ve been using Alien Skin plug-ins with Photoshop for years, so it’s nice to know that the company behind these plug-ins continues to improve their tried-and-true Eye Candy package for those of you who want to embellish your images with cool effects.

The latest version, Eye Candy 7 improves on past generations, adding a new suite of lightning effects to its already impressive realistic fire, smoke and other filters. The plug-in installs easily on either Mac or PC and works with Adobe Photoshop CS5 or later or Photoshop Elements 10 or later.  It includes a wide variety of effects and textures, including chrome, animal fur, reptile skin, wood, clouds, snow, ice, metal, rust, and many others.

It’s also deft at placing perspective drop-shadows behind objects – a significant improvement over the basic drop-shadow feature in Photoshop itself. When combined with the extrude filter, it can be used to create a fairly convincing illusion of 3D depth.

You can also use Eye Candy 7 to add curved motion trails to objects, which is really helpful for adding movement to static images.

The interface itself is easy to use, offering quick access to numerous pre-built effects, but once you drill into a specific effect, sliders and a large library of presets let you have a tremendous amount of control over the appearance of your effect. You can also zoom in, view effects in split-screen mode with the original selection, and save presets.

Keep in mind that Eye Candy 7 is really designed for applying effects to selected objects, shapes or text layers, not as embellishment to a flat, full scene. That said, you can easily select areas where you want to apply effects using Photoshop’s robust selection tools – and this gives you a much more fine-grained control over effects.

Filters automatically preserve your original selection, and store the effect-enhanced image in a new layer. For those times that you want to fill an entire image, Eye Candy offers a nearly endless variety of texture-making tools which can be used on all, or a part of your images.

While Eye Candy 7 definitely can be used to create realistic (or at least semi-realistic) effects and textures, the huge number of controls available for each one will have you experimenting and playing around for hours. For instance, I found that with the right settings, the Rust tool could actually be used to add moss to objects – and that the Electrify effect could be used to create blood vessels. The possibilities are pretty limitless, and this single plug-in adds a huge variety of capabilities in a single package.

Alien Skin Eye Candy 7 retails for $199.99(USD) over on their website. However, if you buy today (February 20th), Alien Skin is offering a 30% off discount on all of their software. Eye Candy is also available in a demo version if you’d like to try before you buy.

Facebook Used By Police To Inform A Mother About Her Son’s Death

Facebook Used By Police To Inform A Mother About Her Son’s DeathSocial media has become quite useful in our daily lives with several features that have enriched our lives. Gathering people, sending out notices for events, sharing pictures has changed the way we communicate with one another. However Anna Lamb-Creasey is one person who is furious at the police for using the popular social networking website Facebook to inform her of her son’s death.

On January 24th, Ricky Lamb was killed when he got hit by a car and his body was shifted to the morgue. Meanwhile his mother Anna Lamb-Creasey became worried and tried searching for him but didn’t find any sign of him and started contacting hospitals and jails. Police of Clayton County tried to locate her through “traditional methods” and ended up sending her a message on Facebook. Unfortunately the message ended up in her “Other” messages folder, simply because it was sent by a Facebook account run by the name of “Misty Hancock” which is not on the friends list of Lamb-Creasey.

Lamb-Creasey is furious with the police for not getting the message through to her using more conventional methods.  She also believes that the message could have been sent from an official profile which would have been taken seriously.  The intent of the police officer who thought up the idea of sending the message seems good, however the way in which the message was delivered will remain questionable.

Red HTC One Disappears

Red HTC One DisappearsThe red colored HTC One seems to be a rather shy creature, considering how it appeared alongside the black and silver versions of the recently announced HTC One on the website just a day before. Thing is, it is no longer there, and perhaps the crimson colored model is something that is supposed to be kept under wraps for a special occasion, but with Valentine’s Day over, and that being a major event where certain manufacturers decide to roll out red or pink versions of a device in their inventory, could it be a mistake on the graphic designer’s part?

Who knows, and as to the reality of us seeing a red HTC One in the flesh remains up in the air, anything goes. Hopefully the folks over at HTC will be able to shed more light on the situation, or at least come up with an official statement to confirm once and for all as to whether the red HTC One will be as real as death and taxes, or will it remain in the mythic realm of unicorns and a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. We prefer to vote against it being a “Web error” – how about you?

Company of Heroes movie set for DVD and Blu-ray February 26

THQ may no longer be amongst us, but its Relic Entertainment-developed game Company of Heroes is still in the all clear with its movie adaptation. The straight-to-DVD movie is set for release next week on February 26 in North America, with a European release roughly a month later on March 25.

companyofheroes-movie

The full-length film, based on Relic Entertainment’s real-time strategy series, is about a band of soldiers that are tasked with stopping the Germans from completing their own atomic bomb during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. The movie will be available on both Blu-ray and DVD, and will include two behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as deleted scenes.

The movie is directed by Don Michael Paul, who is known for directing a handful of smaller movies, as well as starring in The Island. Company of Heroes stars Tom Sizemore, Vinnie Jones, Neal McDonough, Jurgen Prochnow, and Chad Collins. Sizemore has starred in past war films, including Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down.

Earlier last month, THQ sold most of its assets to other companies, and Relic Entertainment ended up being snatched by Sega for $26.6 million. There’s no word on what will happen to the Company of Heroes video game series, but we at least have the movie to look forward to. Hopefully it’s good, but it probably won’t live up to Steven Spielberg’s and Tom Hank’s own WWII films.

AMD Turbo Dock Technology Announced

AMD Turbo Dock Technology AnnouncedThese days, we do seem to see more and more companies take the multi-tasking route, that is, to roll out multi-functional devices and hybrids. Remember the good old days when your mobile phone was just that, and it did not do anything more other than to make and receive calls in addition to text messages? Well, smartphones have more or less rendered the featurephone defunct, and AMD intends to eke out a tiny market space by introducing their AMD Turbo Dock system, which is something that will automatically adjust the performance of an AMD-powered tablet, depending on whether it remains hooked up to a keyboard dock or not.

When in tablet mode, you will be able to enjoy 1080p HD video playback support, 3D gaming capability and a host of other features, but your CPU will not have to run at full speed since changes are you will not be running processor intensive tasks. AMD claims that their Turbo Dock technology is able to provide a boost to CPU and GPU performance by up to 40% whenever it is docked. Will it catch on later this year as hybrid tablets based on the AMD Temash platform arrive? Only time will tell, so stay tuned.
