Star Wars on Your Wall

Decorating a kid’s (little or big) bedroom must involve something entertaining, that looks good and yet does not drive you insane when installing. Tough combination sometimes. And then of course you don’t want it to be TOO permanent, as inevitably they will change their interests. The Strawberry Shortcake girl’s room will have to be converted to a teenage hangout at some point. And little Bobby won’t always want to sleep in a room dominated with “Cars” characters. If your little ones are passing through a Star Wars phase we may have the perfect, unique solution for their wall(s).

A long, long time ago in a kids room far, far away came the Walltastic Star Wars Wall Stickers, £39.95 at Prezzybox. Characters literally jump out at you as the appliques are 3D. This is not your typical wallpaper nightmare either. Installing the stickers is actually a cinch. The mural comes in 12 numbered strips. Hang them, in order, using a little wallpaper glue in one corner to complete the work of art. You won’t hassle with glue everywhere and unbearable mess. Once up, don’t worry about mucky hands as a damp cloth will easily clean the scene. And plenty other characters and themes are available including Dora the Explorer, Peppa Pig and The Avengers. So if you are looking for a simple yet fun way to decorate the kid’s domain, invite some of their favorite characters in.

Universal Background Checks Backed By Republican Rep. Joe Heck

WASHINGTON — The prospects of passing an important part of President Barack Obama’s gun control agenda improved a bit on Tuesday when a House Republican announced his support for universal background checks for firearm purchases.

“I think the idea of background checks across the board, I’m not opposed to them,” Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.) told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “And I disagree with people who say that this is going to be the first step to gun registration, which leads to gun confiscation. Look, about 40 percent of folks already undergo background checks when they get their guns. And that information is purged after a short period.”

“Too many people just want to discount everything out of hand. And you can’t. You’ve got to have a thoughtful discussion,” he added. “You’ve got to look at what the definitions of each of these things are and how they will be applied before you say: ‘I’m against universal background checks, or I’m against this, or I’m against that.’ Look, we have a problem. Let’s figure out the best way to address the problem. And to me the problem is…. making sure an individual who shouldn’t have a weapon of any type – because they have a propensity to commit a violent act – doesn’t get their hands on that weapon.”

With Playstation 4 Event, Sony Attempts To Beat Microsoft To The Punch

By Tim Kelly and Malathi Nayak

TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp is expected to showcase a new PlayStation console on Wednesday in a pre-emptive strike against Microsoft Corp’s bid to make its Xbox the world’s leading hub for household entertainment.

The rare PlayStation event in New York comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360, which beats the seven-year-old PlayStation 3’s online network with features such as voice commands on interactive gaming and superior connectivity to smartphones and tablets.

“Their focus is on establishing a beachhead for the next generation of consoles, and that’s what February 20 is all about,” said P.J. McNealy, CEO and founder of Digital World Research. “The reality is they have been playing catch-up.”

Pushing ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo Co Ltd’s new Wii U could help Sony revive an electronics business hurt by a dearth of hit gadgets, a collapse in TV sales and the convergence of consumer interest around tablets and smartphones built by rivals Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.

Tablets and smartphones already account for around 10 percent of the $80 billion gaming market. Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of game-only consoles.

After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox’s 67 million installed base and well behind the 100-million selling Wii, analysts said.

A lackluster launch in November of the Wii successor, the Wii U, gives Sony a chance to focus on toppling Microsoft as all three battle the encroachment of casual gaming on tablets and smartphones. Nintendo cut its sales target to 4 million machines from 5.5 million for the year ending March 31.

STREAMING

Microsoft’s answer to the casual gaming threat has been software that gives users extra content and allows them to surf the Internet from their mobile devices. The Xbox already streams Netflix and ESPN and links to tablets and smartphones using Windows or Apple’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android. Sony’s PS3 online network has lagged.

“For Sony, they have to come out and make this PlayStation event the definitive statement of why gamers need to adopt the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation Orbis or whatever they end up calling it,” said Greg Miller, PlayStation executive editor at video game site IGN.com.

Sony’s purchase in July of U.S. cloud-based gaming company Gaikai for $380 million hints that the Japanese company will pursue a similar streaming strategy to Microsoft. Sony, industry watchers say, may also offer an expanded range of free games to counter the threat from casual gaming.

Sony, which under its CEO Kazuo Hirai is focusing on gaming, mobile devices and cameras, needs a hit product. But by betting on a PS3 successor, Hirai, whose most profitable business is life insurance, risks deepening consumer electronic losses as he will have to sell consoles at below the manufacturing cost to gain market traction.

That choice is made harder because the other two pillars of Hirai’s new Sony – cameras and mobile – are losing money.

Sony expects to post a $1.4 billion operating profit in the current fiscal year. Yet, much of that rebound is gains from offloading real estate, including $1.1 billion for its New York headquarters.

The PlayStation event in New York starts at 2300 GMT (1800 EST).

Bahrain Accuses Iran Revolutionary Guard Of Setting Up Terrorist Cell To Attack Government Buildings

ABU DHABI, Feb 20 (Reuters) – Bahrain has accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guard of setting up a militant cell to assassinate public figures in the Gulf Arab kingdom and attack its airport and government buildings.

Bahraini authorities said on Sunday they had arrested eight Bahrainis in the group, with links to Iran, Iraq and Lebanon.

The kingdom, base for the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has been in political turmoil since protests erupted there in 2011, led by majority Shi’ite Muslims demanding an end to the Sunni monarchy’s political domination and full powers for parliament.

Bahrain has accused Shi’ite Iran of fuelling the unrest, an accusation Tehran has consitently denied.

In a statement published by the official Bahrain News Agency late on Tuesday, Bahrain’s head of public security said the cell was part of a group called the “Imam Army” which included Bahrainis at home and abroad and members of other nationalities.

“Investigation has also revealed that a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard codenamed ‘Abu Naser’ masterminded the whole terror operation,” the agency quoted public security chief Major-General Tariq Hassan al-Hassan as saying.

Abu Nasser supplied the group with $80,000, Hassan said, and instructed it to gather information, recruit and obtain weapons storage in Bahrain.

“MISTAKEN PATH”

The cell’s planned targets included the Ministry of Interior and Bahrain International Airport, he said. The group attended training camps run by the Revolutionary Guard inside Iran, as well as some operated by Iraq’s Hezbollah in Baghdad and the Iraqi city of Kerbala, Hassan added.

Five of the detainees were arrested in Bahrain and three in Oman, General Hassan said, adding another four Bahrainis were being sought by the authorities.

He said authorities had collected evidence in the form of papers and electronic documents, flashcards, phones, computers, cash and images of bank transactions.

On Monday Ramin Mehmanparast, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, dismissed Sunday’s news of the arrests.

“Unfortunately Bahraini officials are following a mistaken path,” Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

He said Bahraini officials were “making accusations against various countries including Iran, and they imagine that in this way they can solve the problem they are encountering”.

News of the arrests emerged after an upsurge in unrest on the island last week. A protester and a policeman were killed in clashes on Feb. 14 as anti-government protesters marked the second anniversary of the uprising.

The violence has clouded the atmosphere around talks that began on Feb. 10 between the mostly Shi’ite opposition and the Sunni-dominated government to find a way out of the impasse over Shi’ite demands for more democracy.

Another round of talks was due to be held on Wednesday afternoon. (Reporting by Raissa Kasolowsky; Editing by William Maclean and Andrew Roche)
