OTG Lays The Foundation For A Connected Airport That Speaks Your Language, Whatever That Language May Be

iPad GUI PSD

OTG, the restaurateur that made waves when it installed free access iPads in some of the world’s busiest international airport hubs last year, is improving its existing system with the deployment of a translation system that will allow it to provide translation of its restaurant menus in 13 different languages. The system is already live in test deployments at locations like Toronto’s Pearson airport, and CEO Rick Blatstein tells me it’s already having a positive impact on sales at OTG-run restaurants.

The effort will soon encompass 20 languages and see wider deployment in more of the airports where OTG is already operating in North America, including LaGuardia and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Blatstein said that his company quickly saw the value in offering multi-lingual support after realizing that at Pearson, for example, English is the first language of only around 40 percent of travelers at any given time on average.

“We have all of our menus and everything translated and tested ahead of time so that when you push the flag of your language, it automatically translates that for you,” Blatstein said. The idea is to make travelers feel more at ease, since they’re able to communicate in their own language. Ordering can happen right from the iPad kiosks, meaning there’s no chance of encountering language-barrier problems between travelers and serving staff.

OTG’s iPad deployment also provides travelers with access to Facebook, Twitter, flight status information, and more without charging them. The aim is to make air passengers feel less like a captive audience and more like treasured guests when spending time in the airports that frequent travelers likely know all too well. The translation service, applied at launch to restaurant offerings, is a first step, according to Blatstein, and one that will eventually make its way to the company’s offerings outside of its restaurateur endeavors, too. Customers could soon order commercial goods from iPads in the language of their choice, Blatstein suggests, or set up accommodations or ground transit at their destination ahead of time.

Airports can maintain multi-lingual staff, and cater to the most common languages spoken at their hubs, but you can’t cater to all the various people from every neck of the woods at every location all of the time. But with an iPad-supplemented customer-service model with built-in translation services, you actually might be able to be everything to everyone. OTG isn’t quite there yet, but it’s making big steps in that direction, and that could make air travel (or at least the parts in between) much more pleasant for all involved.

Blackberry Z10 Could Arrive On Verizon In April [Rumor]

Blackberry Z10 Could Arrive On Verizon In April [Rumor]If you’re a Verizon subscriber and you’re wondering when will you be able to get your hands on a Blackberry Z10, word on the street has it that Verizon could be planning to launch the smartphone come April. Granted April will be later compared to T-Mobile’s mid-March launch, but Verizon might have their reasons. As some of you guys know, the Blackberry Z10 is expected to be followed by the Blackberry Q10 which is the QWERTY version of a Blackberry 10 smartphone, and that the Q10 could be seeing a launch in April. This has led some to speculate that perhaps Verizon is hoping to launch both the Z10 and the Q10 at the same time, perhaps to nab more customers in one fell swoop. We’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Is an April launch on Verizon a bit too late for you guys?

Unofficial League Of Legends Themed Restaurant Opens In China

Unofficial League Of Legends Themed Restaurant Opens In ChinaWe’re sure that there are gamers out there who eat, breathe, and sleep Tencent’s League of Legends game. However in China it looks like you will be able to do just that as an unofficial League of Legends themed restaurant has been opened. The restaurant has been named Demacia which is a city-state within the game, and unsurprisingly the staff all dress up as characters from the game, and the menu features items named after the game, such as a dish called Cassiopeia. In fact once you’re done eating, you will also be able to play League of Legends in the café as well. Unfortunately this is not an official restaurant as Tencent Games’ spokesperson, Xiong Mao, the developer has nothing to do with this restaurant. We’re not sure if they will be taking legal action, but for now would any of you guys be interested in visiting such a restaurant?

Yahoo gets personal with homepage revamp

Yahoo! has launched a new, refreshed homepage, with a greater emphasis on personalization together with aggregation of news, entertainment, Facebook recommendations, and more. Designed for both desktop and mobile browsers, whether on tablet or smartphone, the new Yahoo! experience includes an updated set of applications, including pulling Facebook birthdays in if you log in with your account, and fitting recommended news articles from friends into an infinite scroll feed.

yahoo_redesign

That feed can be customized to suit your own interests, whether that be sports, world events, entertainment, or a mixture of them all. The new apps include local weather forecasts, stock tickers, and trending topics, and if you don’t want to use your Facebook credentials (or you don’t have an account) you can log in with your Yahoo! account and get suggested content from friends that way instead.

yahoo_update_mobile

Times haven’t been easy for Yahoo! in recent years, with a deal with Microsoft to use Bing as the underlying search engine failing to produce the sort of results CEO Marissa Mayer was hoping for. The strategy remains at odds with that of Google’s pared-back simplicity, putting everything a user might want to see at first glance into one page.

Yahoo! says the new homescreen wil begin to roll out to US users over the next few days, with plenty more tweaks and changes planned in the coming months. No word on international launch timescales at this stage.

Samsung receives patent for music player that lets you add your own riffs

Samsung receives patent for music player that lets you add your own riffs

Though patents often never amount to anything, we sincerely hope this wacky one from Samsung does. It’s an approved idea for a portable music player that also contains keys and motion detectors to let it function as a “musical instrument,” too. While listening to that epic jam, you could play along by pressing keys on the side of the device as if you were fingering a guitar’s fretboard. You’d be able to change position on the “guitar neck” by moving the player back and forth, and a motion detector on the side would sense the fingers on your other hand as you strum chords or pluck out a solo. Your GarageBand-style noodling, along with the original music would all blare through a speaker and amp combo on the device, to the amusement / horror of your friends. That’s assuming Samsung ever builds one, of course — but if not, our John Q. Engadget will be the first name on a petition to get it to market.

Bentley Flying Spur revealed: Most beastly 4-door to-date

Bentley has revealed its new Flying Spur, billed as the fastest, most powerful four-door Bentley to-date, and packing even vaster quantities of technology into its cosseting wood, leather, and metal-clad cabin. Set to officially debut at the Geneva Motor Show in early March, the new Flying Spur squeezes a 6.0-litre, twin-turbo W12 powerplant under the hood, pushing out 616bhp and 800Nm of torque for a 200mph top speed and a 0-60mph dash in 4.3s. However, inside, there’s a combination of comfort and gadgetry, with a 1100W Naim audio system and touchscreen controls.

new_flying_spur_1_2

The W12 is hooked up via an eight-speed ZF auto transmission to the four-wheel drive system, which normally splits things 60:40 (rear:front) but can bias its output by up to 85-percent to the rear (or up to 65-percent to the front) depending on road conditions. Bentley also promises a bump in responsiveness at low-speed, and 580 lb-ft of torque at just 2,000 revs. Economy probably isn’t going to be too high on the agenda for most owners, but the Flying Spur will put in a 19.2mpg combined cycle, with 343g/km CO2 output.

Bentley Flying Spur preview:

Under the muscular haunches, there’s a new air suspension system that automatically lowers the car when it climbs above 121mph. It’s also capable of more comfort, however, not just adjusting for stability, with up to a 13-percent increase in softness for passengers. Outside, it’s a mixture of aluminum, polymer composite, and other lightweight materials, with a new, longer and lower trunk lid, more upright grill, some extra creasing to draw your eye along the waistline, and a 4-percent increase in rigidity. Despite all that, it’s actually 50kg lighter than the version it replaces (ditching the “Continental” branding in the process).

Step inside, and Bentley’s attention to detail becomes clear. The Flying Spur will be offered in both four and five seat versions, depending on how willing you are to share your luxury, with a new, softer leather, 14-way power adjustable seats (all with both heating and ventilation), and electric rear sunblinds, with the option of a no-cost glass roof. In the four-door, the center console sweeps all the way through the middle of the cabin; either way, a single veneer is used for the dash and the doors, so that it appears like an unbroken swathe of wood.

new_flying_spur_front_cabin_2_2

The standard audio system offers eight channels and eight speakers, while the Naim system steps up with individual subwoofers. Both can play CDs, DVDs, music from SD cards and iPod/iPhone, and the onboard hard-drive. A touchscreen remote system in the back allows control over multimedia, navigation, and heating/cooling. An option, meanwhile, is the Bentley Multi-Media Specification, which throws in an integrated mobile WiFi hotspot, 64GB of storage, two 10-inch LCD displays for the rear passengers, each with their own multimedia loading stations (for CD/DVD, SD, USB, and HDMI input) and wireless headphones.

Bentley is yet to confirm pricing for the new 2014 Flying Spur, which will begin hitting dealerships in summer this year. However, we’d expect somewhere in the region of the $210,000 starting price of the existing model, climbing rapidly the more customizations you ask of the company.

HTC announces HTC One

There is a new flagship smartphone in the Android side of town, and it will bear the HTC name this time around. Simply known as the HTC One, do not mistake this for its previous HTC One series that came with suffixes of alphabets such as the HTC One S, the HTC One X, and the HTC One X+. This is simply called the HTC One, where it was specially crafted with a distinct zero-gap aluminum unibody, and will also introduce new features such as HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, which we will talk about in greater detail.

First of all, there is the HTC BlinkFeed, which functions as a personal live stream on your home screen itself, ensuring that you will be able to check out all relevant and important information such as social network updates, entertainment and lifestyle updates, news, and photos without having to fire up an app. Talk about being on top of things with but a glance! The HTC BlinkFeed offers local as well as global content from over 1,400 media sources with more than 10,000 articles per day.

As for the touted HTC UltraPixel Camera with HTC Zoe, the former will change the way you shoot photos and videos with your smartphone. HTC Zoe lets one shoot high-resolution photos which come to life in three-second snippets, sort of like a 50% discounted version of Twitter’s Vine. Having said that, Zoes will be displayed in a special manner that brings the gallery to life, while turning the once stoic photo gallery of still images into a motion gallery of memories.

HTC’s UltraPixel camera will feature a best-in-class f/2.0 aperture lens and a breakthrough sensor with UltraPixels that gather 300% additional light compared to the traditional smartphone camera sensors. It claims to offer astounding low-light performance, and has an ultrawide-angle, front-facing camera that also does 1080p video capture.

As for HTC BoomSound, it offers front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier on a smartphone for the first time, complementing the Full HD display. HTC Sense TV is a must-have for couch potatoes, as it turns the new HTC One into an interactive program guide and remote control for compatible TVs, set-top boxes and receivers.

Divoom Bluetune-solo portable Bluetooth speaker

Portable Bluetooth speakers, ah, we sure as heck have seen our fair share of them in our time. Well, just like how there is a myriad of other smartphones out there, so too, do we embrace the diversity of Bluetooth speakers, and the latest release from Divoom is certainly worth checking out. Known as the Bluetune-solo, this portable Bluetooth speaker from Divoom will boast of an X-Bass Sound System as well as built-in microphone, allowing you to use it as a hands-free kit when you require to carry out a conversation on your smartphone while both your hands are occupied, or as the law dictates (such as when you’re driving, that is).

The main selling point of the Bluetune-solo portable Bluetooth speaker in our books would be its ability to daisy chain multiple units together. In a nutshell, users are able to add on and remove speakers according to their current audio needs. The compact Bluetune-solo is easily thrown into a bag, and can be taken with you wherever you need your music to be.

As mentioned earlier, the Bluetune-solo sports an X-Bass Sound System that delivers patented PO-Bass Technology. In other words, your ears will be able to enjoy deep bass and more vibrant sound compared to other portable and compact speakers in the same market range. The Bluetune-solo will also feature a built-in rechargeable battery that is said to carry enough charge which offers up to 8 hours of play time.

When you throw in its daisy-chain capability that enables one to string multiple speakers together, you will end up with a customized audio experience for small and large listening environments. Sporting an all-in-one button that is conveniently located on the top of the speaker, the Bluetune-solo wirelessly will hook up to all Bluetooth devices including smartphones, tablets, and laptops among others.

You will be able to select from a range of bright and trendy colors including red, blue, white, orange and slate, and in case you still have that do not support Bluetooth, there is an auxiliary-in port. The Bluetune-solo can be yours for $49.90.
