Pedego Trail Tracker Electric Fatbike

Pedego Trail Tracker Electric FatbikeFor those of you who love mountain biking, perhaps you love the well tarred roads that are smooth as a baby’s bottom, and we also know of the excitement in riding down a mountain trail. But what about those stretches of loose snow or sand? Such terrain is not exactly the most conducive for riding, even with the large 2.75-inch tires, as they seem to have a tendency to sink in and get all bogged down. Which could be why California-based Pedego has rolled out an electric fatbike that they call the Trail Tracker.

The Trail Tracker will be different from the pedelecs which rely on electrical power in order to augment the rider’s pedal strokes, as this is entirely an e-bike, where you can choose to pedal without any help from its battery reserve, or to run it via motor power alone. The 48-volt 10Ah lithium-ion battery will be able to send you rolling down at 20 mph, retailing for $2,975 a pop.

Stick-on Film Transforms Glass Into Smart Window

Stick on Film Transforms Glass Into Smart WindowSmart cars, smart homes, smartphones, everything seems to be getting a brain these days while humanity begins their long journey in being dumbed down. Well, Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has something interesting up their sleeves, which would come in the form of a stick-on film which is capable of transforming glass into a smart window, which will also do its bit in reducing the air conditioning load through the reflection of sunlight.

If you have flown on the grounded Boeing 787 Dreamliner before, you would have found its electrochromic dimming system useful, as passengers at the window seat are able to make windows on the aircraft more or less opaque with but a single touch of a button, taking around half a minute to change. Japan’s AIST claims that their new stick-on window film is capable of transforming from reflective to see-through in a mere 5 seconds, now how about that? This switchable mirror device will change its state whenever a low voltage is applied. Smart windows in cars, now this is what we’re talking about where the future is concerned.

Sony Xperia Z Rooted Before Official Release

Sony Xperia Z Rooted Before Official ReleaseThe Sony Xperia Z has yet to roll out officially in most countries, but apparently, it has been rooted before it was officially rolled out. DoomLord of XDA-Devs fame has relied on the CF-Auto-Root toolkit from the Nexus 4 rooting odyssey in order to achieve this. Using a slight modification on the Nexus 4 root tool, the Sony Xperia Z will be available to be free for modding as well as hacking according to your heart’s desire, and so far, it seems that Sony’s device is more than ready to be tinkered with even further.

We also have word that Sony remains reluctant to pose too many restrictions on its Android-powered smartphones, since it will actually encourage developers to perform hacks and mods. What do you think of the Sony Xperia Z’s root before its release? Will we also see the same happen to other smartphones in the market?

HTC One Photos Not The Coolest On The Block

HTC One Photos Not The Coolest On The BlockThe good folks over at MobileSyrup have managed to capture some photos using the HTC One, the recently introduced flagship smartphone earlier this morning, and I guess some folks figure out that HTC can very well keep their “Ultrapixel” battle cry. Sure, HTC has more or less managed to reduce the megapixel count all the way to just four, while sporting optical image stabilization and extra-large pixels that have been advertised to guarantee decent low-light performance and low noise.

HTC claims that such technology is supposed to be so far advanced that it is more or less impossible to port it over to the Windows Phone platform. Well, the sample image above does not really reflect the amount of advertising put into the HTC One. What do you think of it? Is it far too noisy, and do you think that the sample photo is over-exposed on the whites? Someone should actually perform a photo shoot out competition, and see just which high end model comes out tops, and I am quite sure that our Finnish friends over at Nokia will have plenty to say about the situation.

Chris Kelly: More Depressing News About Gas, Wages, Bush and Obama (NSFW)

Gas prices have just gone up for the 33rd day in a row. This would be terrible news for the recovery, but luckily in last week’s State of the Union address, President Obama discovered the power to bend time with words, and used it to increase everyone’s mileage.

In case you missed it, he announced:

“We have doubled the distance our cars will go on a gallon of gas.” (applause)

Ofcom announces 4G spectrum winners in the UK, snags less cash than expected

Ofcom announces 4G spectrum winners in the UK, snags less cash than expected

UK regulator Ofcom has revealed the winners of its 4G spectrum auction after more than 50 rounds of bidding: EE, Hutchison 3G (Three), BT subsidiary Niche Spectrum Ventures, Telefonica (O2) and Vodafone. It wasn’t all good news however, as the agency revealed the auction only roped in £2.4 billion pounds, less than the £3.5 billion it had anticipated. Left on the outside looking in? MLL Telecom and HKT Company. Interestingly enough it was Vodafone — headed by CEO Vittorio Colao who famously suggested only “technofreaks” were into 4G speed — that spent the most.

The idea is to spread high speed wireless across “almost the whole” UK population by 2017 at the latest, and the auction’s intent was to create more competition in the space. Telefonica UK specifically is required to provide indoor reception to at least 98 percent of the population by then, as a condition of its bid. As seen above, the available 250MHz of spectrum was auctioned off in two separate bands, 800MHz (ideal for expanded coverage and freed up by the digital TV transition) and 2.6GHz more suited to high speed data connections. So what’s next? You guessed it — another round of bidding, to determine where in each band the winners spectrum lies, before services roll out in spring or summer of this year. Hit the source link to check out the full results for yourself and prepare for the 5G battle, expected to commence sometime after 2018.

Evasi0n jailbreak updated for iOS 6.1.2. untethered

On February 4, the folks behind Evasi0n released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1. Not long after, Apple rolled out the iOS 6.1.2 update to deal with some issues with the mobile operating system, and Evad3rs – the team responsible for the jailbreak – got to work. As of today, the evasi0n application has been updated to version 1.4, allowing users to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 devices untethered

Screen-Shot-2013-02-19-at-23.09.22

You can use evasi0n to jailbreak any Apple device running 6.1.2, except Apple TV 3. Before doing so, you should prepare properly to make sure nothing goes awry. Check out our handy guide for a list of things you should know, and pay particular attention to the part about updating through iTunes, not OTA.

Grab the newest version of evasi0n from its website; it can be run on Windows XP or higher, OS X 10.5 or higher, and Linux x86/x86_64. Before getting started, remove the passcode on your device if you’re using one to avoid the issues it could cause with the jailbreaking process. The last big step is backing up your data, which is essential if you don’t want to lose anything.

Fire up Evasi0n and click “Jailbreak,” then leave everything alone to make sure you don’t accidentally mess something up. The entire process takes about five minutes, so lean back and listen to your favorite song or refill your beverage. By the time you return to your device, it’ll have likely rebooted and will display a jailbreak icon, which you’ll then need to tap on to finish the process and liberate your Apple device.

Oscar Pistorius Bail Hearing: ‘Blade Runner’ Arrives At Court On Wednesday

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius arrived at the court building in a police car with a blue blanket covering his head Wednesday as prosecutors prepared to outline in more detail why they believe the double-amputee Olympian murdered his model girlfriend and should be denied bail.

The 26-year-old Pistorius sat in the back of the car, which was in a convoy of three police vehicles that entered the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court through a side entrance ahead of the second day of his bail hearing.
