Carrier IQ gives its remote smartphone diagnosing tool a global release

Carrier IQ has let customer service reps diagnose smartphones from afar with its IQ Care software for a while, but now the solution has been given a worldwide release. By wielding IQ Care (and asking a phone owner’s permission, we’re assured), technicians can see device-specific stats such as a battery’s drain rate, percentage of app failures, frequency of dropped calls and more. The outfit hopes that its software will make support calls shorter and ensure that fewer fully-functioning devices aren’t misdiagnosed and returned needlessly. As of now, however, there isn’t any word on which networks or hardware manufacturers will join the metric-hungry flock.

Carrier iQ Reinvents Customer Care with iQ Care[TM]

Leading Mobile Intelligence Provider Brings Proven Device-Centric Big Data Customer Care Solution to the Global Telecommunications Market

Mobile World Congress 2013
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Carrier iQ, a pioneer in mobile intelligence, today announced the worldwide availability of its iQ Care[TM] device-side care solution designed to reduce customer care costs, increase subscriber satisfaction, and reduce churn.

With the market for connected mobile devices accelerating, and smartphones and tablets continuing their market penetration, support costs are sharply increasing, fueled by a combination of factors, including uncertified applications, new interfaces, complexity of devices, fragmentation of operating systems, and the frequency of updates.

Mobile operators typically have access to a wealth of data from their networks and some user-generated information, but they have little insight on what is happening on the device itself. Only device-sourced metrics can give operators a true representation of the performance of a device to help resolve device support issues and improve the consumer experience.

“To truly create a differentiated experience across the customer lifecycle, mobile operators have to see the world from the customer’s view – the mobile device,” said Sheryl Kingstone, Yankee Group Research Director. “Operators are constantly striving to increase service quality and customer satisfaction to improve the overall customer experience. There is a great need to focus on improved care, particularly from the consumer’s perspective.”

iQ Care[TM] is a customer care solution aimed at reducing the duration of customer support calls, decreasing the number of no-fault-found device returns, and improving the consumer experience. Built upon Carrier iQ’s unique, big data Mobile Service Intelligence Platform[TM] (MSIP), iQ Care[TM] utilizes iQ Agent[TM] on-device software to analyze relevant user experience metrics from the device. With explicit permission from the end user, and without tangible impact on battery drain rates, data plan usage or user experience, iQ Agent[TM] gathers system information on the performance and usage of the device and delivers this information to the MSIP. Device-sourced information and actionable insights are presented to the care agents, enabling them to diagnose and resolve the consumer’s problem quickly and efficiently.

“iQ Care is a proven solution with the most recent deployment now handling eight million simultaneously reporting devices. We are charting a path forward for operators, device manufacturers and other service providers to leverage device-side insights, first for reactive care, then for proactive care and, ultimately, for self-care. This approach delivers a quick and substantial ROI while dramatically improving customer experience. iQ Care is another step in our vision to become the provider of choice for mobile intelligence to the smartphone industry and to the roaring growth of mobile-connected devices,” said Larry Lenhart, CEO of Carrier iQ.

iQ Care[TM] provides mobile operators and mobile device manufacturers with:

Reduced handling time on support calls

  • Higher first call resolution (FCR) scores
  • Ability to dramatically reduce unnecessary device returns (no-fault-found returns)
  • Robust privacy features that can be seamlessly customized to comply with customer privacy policies and applicable legislations
  • Actionable big data analytics about the device, its operation, and actual consumer experience
  • Ability to measure a device by comparing its performance to millions of other devices

iQ Care[TM] will be showcased at Mobile World Congress[TM] in Barcelona, Spain, February 25- 28 at the Carrier iQ booth (5H34, Hall 5), as well as at Carrier iQ partner booths.

Here’s Everything Wrong with Inception

Though it only seems like yesterday that Inception came out (because of everyone overusing the Inception horn), it’s been over 2 years since a big budget mainstream movie has wrinkled people’s brain like it did. But because it was so committed to wowing us with illogical logic, there were bound to be mistakes in the movie. Here is everything wrong with Inception, which now doesn’t seem nearly as good as it was when I watched it the first time. [Cinema Sins] More »

Zero Motorcycle releases app for iOS and Android with customizable dashboard

DNP Zero Motorcycle releases app for iOS and Android

If you’re a loyal Zero Motorcycle owner — even after a few unfortunate recalls by the electric bike maker — you’re about to be rewarded for your dedication. The Santa Cruz-based firm has just released an app for both iOS and Android that provides a customizable riding dashboard along with valuable statistical data about your vehicle. You can change the dashboard so it displays percentage state of charge, torque, drivetrain component temperatures, battery amps and more during Riding Mode, and after the ride’s over you can flip over to Statistics Mode to get stats like how much gas money you might’ve wasted if you weren’t riding a Zero. If you don’t have one, you can still play with the app in Demo mode just to see how it works. The app pairs with the bike over Bluetooth and is available for free from both the App Store and Google Play.

Zero Motorcycles Releases First Ever Motorcycle iPhone and Android App
— New Mobile Application Allows Riders to Customize Motorcycle Performance —

PR Newswire
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Feb. 19, 2013
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Feb. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced the release of its highly anticipated mobile application for Apple iOS and Android devices. The “Zero Motorcycles” app is the world’s first mobile application with the ability to control the performance characteristics of a production motorcycle. Connected via Bluetooth, the motorcycle pushes live, or archived, information from the motorcycle to the app on the rider’s mobile device. Featuring two basic modes, the app displays either a customizable riding dashboard or statistical data about the motorcycle. Riders can customize the riding dashboard with options such as percentage state of charge, torque, drivetrain component temperatures, battery amps and more. When parked, owners can view a lifetime of information about the motorcycle and have access to compelling statistics such as how much gas money they have saved.

“The Zero Motorcycles app marks the first time in history that a production motorcycle’s top speed, torque and regenerative braking can be easily adjusted by an owner in seconds. Not only is it fun, it also results in a riding experience that is truly customized to meet the unique needs of every individual,” said Scot Harden, Vice President of Marketing for Zero Motorcycles. “We encourage interested fans to download the app, play with it in Demo Mode and then schedule a test ride with their local dealer so that they can truly appreciate the Zero Motorcycles experience.”

Once paired to a motorcycle, owners can begin customizing settings and feeling good about a host of compelling economical and ecological reasons to ride electric everyday. Among the customizable settings are fields to enter the owner’s cost of electricity, cost of a gallon of gas and the miles per gallon of their alternative vehicle. To bring a little extra joy to every ride, the app uses this information to calculate statistics, such as how much money has been saved on gas, the unbelievably low cost of energy consumed per mile and how much CO2 has been prevented from being released into the atmosphere.

The entire 2013 Zero Motorcycles lineup features the ability to connect to each motorcycle’s cutting edge Z-ForceTM powertrain. Seamlessly integrated into the powertrain, the app also allows owners to send their motorcycle’s diagnostic reports to a technician so that it can be quickly and easily reviewed. A fantastic deal for owners, there is no additional cost for any of this functionality and the Zero Motorcycles app is free. More information, a user guide and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the Zero Motorcycles mobile app webpage. The app can be downloaded at:

Jabra unveils Motion Series, offers integrated motion sensor for environmental adaptability

Jabra has unveiled its new Jabra Motion Series of headsets, which includes the Jabra Motion UC and the Jabra Motion. The line is unique due to its use of motion sensors and microphones to monitor and react to environemental situations intelligently. For example, audio will be optimized based on the ambient noise levels in the surroundings, and adjustments are made based on movements, such as shutting off when one lays down to nap.

motion_image_1440x810px_01

The integrated motion sensor and “intelligent” microphone allows the user to spend more time concentrating on the call, and less time adjusting and fiddling with the headset. One example of the motion sensor at work is the auto-on feature that turns the device on when it senses that it has been picked up. Likewise, if one goes from sitting to walking, the audio will be tweaked to adjust for the change in noise that will result, ensuring that the call quality is not diminished.

Says Jabra’s CEO Mogens Elsberg, “We aim to help the mobile worker gain the full benefits from their mobile devices and UC solutions. It is our experience that one of the most important factors for users, embracing these communication platforms and devices, is the headset which bridges the gap between the users and the promise of efficiency and flexibility with sound.”

The Jabra Motion Series is optimized for Microsoft Lync 2013, with Jabra boasting that it has been a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner since 2007. There’s no word yet on when the Motion Series will be available for purchase or how much you’ll have to shell out for the headsets, with the Jabra website currently displaying availability as “Coming soon.”

Jeep Twitter Account Hacked, Gets Logo Change

Jeep Twitter Account Hacked, Gets Logo ChangeIt was just yesterday when we reported on Burger King’s official Twitter account being hacked early in the morning, and the pranksters there decided to tweet the entire world that the fast food chain was being bought over by McDonald’s. Well, a somewhat similar situation has occurred today, and the transportation industry is involved this time around, as Jeep’s Twitter account was hacked, with its logo being taken down and replaced by the Cadillac emblem.

Briefly earlier this morning, followers of Jeep’s Twitter account would most probably have been shocked to see the Cadillac emblem appear, no thanks to a group of mischievous hackers. Apart from the logo change, there was also a tweet that mentioned that Jeep had been sold to General Motors. It was sometime around 3pm when Chrysler regained control of their own Twitter feed, and said, “Thanks for all the heads up on one of our brand accounts. The team is on it. It’s good so many of you have our back!” Looks like the worst is over, huh?

Sony NEX-3N: The Awesomest Beginner Mirrorless Camera Is Now Smaller and Lighter

We’re big fans of Sony’s line of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. Sony Europe just announced NEX-3N, the latest update to the starter NEX camera. We loved last year’s NEX-F3, and, really, we should be elated that Sony has made it considerably smaller and lighter to make it more appealing to entry-level customers. Alas, we’ve got mixed feelings. More »

CNN finally adds live TV streaming access to its Android phone app

CNN finally adds live TV streaming access to its Android phone app

While some of us try to avoid mainstream media and the accompanying Things You Should Be Afraid Of Today reporting, sometimes we need a place to go for 24/7 coverage of a disabled cruise ship, and CNN is always there. Now it’s there on Android too, after launching live streaming of both CNN and HLN on iOS back in 2011 a new update for its Android phone app has brought the feature (and the classic “This is CNN” greeting by James Earl Jones) to the platform. You’ll still need to be a subscriber to a participating cable TV service to actually watch the feed, but getting your dose of Anderson Cooper on the go is as simple as inputting your account details, and then you’re set. Feature parity — who doesn’t love it? (Android tablet owners, Windows 8 users, Symbian…)

Sony announces Cybershot WX300, HX300, and TX30 ultra-zoom and waterproof cameras

Sony has rolled out three new compact cameras, two of which boast exceptionally small bodies, and one that has all the outdoorsy trimmings needed to withstand long treks and harsh environments. Each camera – the WX300, HX300, and TX30 – offer their own array of features tailored to a specific kind of user. Whether you’re looking for an ultra-slim compact or something to snap images underwater, these cameras will meet that need.

WX300_Black_Front-1200

First up is the WX300, which Sony boasts as the world’s lightest and smallest camera available with 20x optical zoom. This super-zoom compact features a wide-angle Sony G Lens, and utilizes SteadyShot for blur-free images. According to the announcement, this camera features double the image stabilization of the last Cybershot 20x zoom camera. Likewise, autofocus is said to be 3.6x faster than the previous model. There’s integrated Wi-Fi that allows photographers to utilizes their smartphone as a remote, as well as making it easy to send images to the cloud without using an SD card and computer.

The HX300 offers quite a bit more zoom at 50x optical, which is just about the highest you’ll find on a compact camera. The HX300 is designed to resemble a dSLR, but does not have an interchangeable lens, instead offering a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T with a coating to reduce flares and reflections. There’s on-board Optical SteadyShot for blur-free images, as well as a high-speed autofocus for a combination that produces sharp, clear images.

Last but not least is the TX30, which is designed for outdoor use, offering protection against freezing temperatures and jostles. The camera is waterproof to 10 meters, and is likewise dustproof. Touted as the world’s thinnest compact digital camera, the TX30 features 5x optical zoom and a Magnifying Glass Plus zoom mode that takes it to 15x.

All three cameras can be pre-ordered now, and will be released next month.
