3D Feh MIT has already moved on to 4D printing video

The bad news: just as much of the world is starting to get excited about the prospects of 3D printing, science is moving on to the world of 4D. The good news: in the future, you might not have to assemble that Ikea chair yourself. “4D printing” is the term cientists are using to refer to a technology that MIT’s Skylar Tibbits talked up during a recent TED appearance. The fourth “d” here is time, referring to an object that, once printed, is capable of changing shape (over time, naturally).

“Essentially the printing is nothing new,” Tibbits told the BBC. “It is about what happens after.” So far the concept has been demonstrated with thin strands of plastic, which, once added to water, form into a predetermined shape, using energy from the absorption. Suggested future applications involve furniture, pipes, bikes and buildings. First, however, scientists will have to demonstrate the technology on a larger structure, of course, and they’ll explore the possibility of other energy sources, like heat, sound and vibration.

Tom Cruise Misses Suri, Sends Private Jet To Pick Up 6-Year-Old (VIDEO)

Well, that’s one way to get a kid to pick a favorite parent: Tom Cruise, 50, who is in London for a movie, sent a private jet to pick up his 6-year-old so she can join him for five days.

It was last week that little Suri missed out on school to spend some quality time with her daddy, E! reports. “Tom sent his private jet to NYC to pick up Suri so she could come to London and spend some time with him,” a source told E! exclusively. “He has been working quite long hours on the set, but he was able to have some time off to be with her.” According to HollywoodLife, until last week the father-daughter duo hadn’t seen each other since Christmas.

While that was going on, Suri’s other parent (the now less cool one?) Katie Holmes spent her solo time at a party in Beverly Hills, according to the Daily Mail.

Malek Chamoun, Blind Australian Weightlifter, Depicted As Drunk By Program On Binge Drinking (VIDEO)

A Feb. 25 episode of Australian TV program “Four Corners” tackles binge drinking in the country and explores what it finds to be a “crisis” of alcohol-fueled violence. To convey that message, the program, titled “Punch Drunk,” uses videos of drunk youth rampaging through streets and scuffling with police, their effects maximized with dramatic background music. One problem: Malek Chamoun, one of the men portrayed as stumbling drunk, wasn’t drunk at all. He’s a champion weightlifter — and he’s blind.

Chamoun appears just over 10.5 minutes into the segment, and can be seen hesitantly descending a set of stairs as a man by his side helpfully supports him down. According to a note on Chamoun’s Facebook page, his guiding cane was just out of frame.

“Pfftt i wasn’t drunk, i’m blind!” he wrote on Facebook. “I was even holding my cane, but the idiots cut it off in the vid. The media has to watch out, this could impact my reputation with my weightlifting carreer [sic].”

Pinky And The Brain Now A Reality, World Domination Not On The Agenda Yet

Pinky And The Brain Now A Reality, World Domination Not On The Agenda YetDo you still remember the cartoon series, Pinky and The Brain? It made me wonder why someone as smart as The Brain would want to hang out with Pinky who more often than not thwarts the former’s plan to take over the world due to Pinky’s relatively low IQ count. Well, scientists have managed to connect the brains of lab rats successfully, where communication is done straight to one another through cables. The wired brain implants pave the way for sensory and motor signals to be sent from one rat to another, which would be the first ever rat-based brain-to-brain interface.

Of course, what is the point of such a system if the receiver could not interpret the information sent correctly and accurately? Professor Miguel Nicolelis and his team at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina are the ones behind this ambitious project, where there will be an “encoder” rat, while the other rat is the “decoder”. The learning process is far from easy, taking around an hour each day, with 45 days in total to get the rat to know what’s right.

Maryland Gun Control Bill Passes Senate

The Maryland Senate on Thursday passed a sweeping gun control bill that would give the state some of the country’s strictest gun regulations.

The Baltimore Sun has details:

In a 28-19 vote, senators approved a plan to require a license to buy a handgun, limit magazines to 10 bullets and ban the sale of assault-style weapons. Maryland State Police would be empowered to audit gun dealers, and state rules limiting gun ownership for people with mental illnesses would be expanded. Other provisions increase the information sent to databases used for background checks.

Alien Vs. Predator: Evolution available now on iOS and Android

Sci-fi third-person shooter Alien vs. Predator: Evolution is out now on iOS and Android. Players will become a member of both species and will fight against members of the opposing species, equipping yourself with various weapons and upgrading along the way. You start the game as either a Young Blood or Facehugger to stalk your prey.

Developer Angry Mob Games and Fox Digital Entertainment announced the news today that the game, which is based on the popular movie series of the same name, is available in the iTunes App Store, as well as the Google Play store for $4.99. Gamers will eviscerate “their way through several unique environments, earning character upgrades and learning new and brutal execution moves every step of the way.”

The game is based on the film duology of the 2004 movie Alien vs. Predator and the 2007 film Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. In the game, assuming control of an alien lifeform, gamers must use their various natural weapons like claws, tails, and shoulder cannons to make their way through hordes of space marines.

Whichever creature type you choose, though, gamers will be able to upgrade their weaponry with new abilities, and each species has its own unique skills, as well. For example, aliens can call facehuggers to their aid, while Predators can bust out net guns and proximity mines if need be.
