Whitney Caudill: The Dreaded Question: Why Aren’t You Married?

Who decided that being single and 30- or 40-something is a bad thing? I could be cynical here and say that the marrieds respond this way because misery loves company. But, really, most people are conditioned to believe that there is only one path that “normal” people follow.

Strange alien slime appears after meteor strike

Here’s your daily dose of crazy. A strange, gooey substance has been appearing all over the Somerset nature reserve that’s about a thousand miles away from Russia. The mysterious substances have been showing up ever since the meteor event in Russia a few days ago. Both the tourists of the reserve, as well as the workers there, have described the slimes resembling “something living”.

Strange slime appears after meteor strike

The strange, alien slimes are appearing all over the Somerset nature reserve in grass banks that are located away from the water’s edge. The slimey substances are each about 10 centimeters (4 inches) in diameter and all of them are translucent. The reserve’s team will continue to analyze the blobs for the next few days.

The local folklore says that previous sightings of the mysterious, alien slime dates all the way back to the 14th century, at least based on their records. Back in the 14th century, the strange slime always appeared shortly after a meteor shower. The locals at the time called the slime “star jelly”, “astral jelly”, or “astromyxin”.

For now, everything is still a mystery. Unlike the 14th century, our technology is much more advanced, and an analysis by scientists could give us a clear, and probably logical, answer to what this substance really is. But until we have those answers, it’s all just a guessing game. What are your theories on what this substance could be?

One Swedish Made Light Enlarging Lamp

Simple is an understatement when it comes to the Vinge, a fine piece of lamp from Swedish design firm Note Design Studio. Stripped down to its essentials, the fixture puts out a beautifully soft light as a result of its massive white dome. And if the quality of light weren’t enough for you, the wing around the base spins 180 degrees letting you fine tune the light output to the exact mood you prefer for the moment. More »

Billy Crystal Has Some Advice For 2013 Oscars’ Host Seth MacFarlane On ‘Katie’

Anticipation for the 2013 Academy Awards is building with the Oscars set to air on February 24. Katie Couric devoted her entire show on Monday to discussing this year’s nominees and past winners and hosts.

Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal were on hand to discuss past Oscars hosts like Bob Hope, who holds the record for hosting the Academy Awards the most times with 19 appearances.

“There are hosts for different eras. I kind of like it old school… because they knew what they were there for,” said Goldberg, who has hosted the Oscars four times and has the distinction of being the first woman to host by herself. “They were just funny, they didn’t have to prove it. Hosting is not an easy thing and not everyone can do it.”

AT&T gives travelers 1GB of not-quite-free WiFi in the UK through The Cloud

AT&T gives travelers 1GB of notentirelyfree WiFi in the UK through The Cloud

Getting data is still a pain while abroad: it usually involves either popping a local SIM into an unlocked device or simply paying through the nose for roaming rates. AT&T wants to meet visitors to the UK halfway through a new WiFi deal with BSkyB’s The Cloud. The pact offers AT&T subscribers 1GB of free WiFi access per month at The Cloud’s hotspots in the UK, as long as they’re using the American carrier’s WiFi International app. The catch? As with AT&T’s normal approach, travelers need to have an international data plan already in place — which means The Cloud is more a way to raise the limit than a true replacement for a roaming bundle. Nonetheless, anyone who just needs that much more data for an Instagram shot of the London Eye can get their fill through the source links.
