UN Hosts Banquet Of Bruised Food To Highlight Waste

OSLO, Feb 19 (Reuters) – The United Nations treated government ministers and officials to a meal of blemished African fruit and vegetables on Tuesday to highlight how perfectly edible food is being rejected by European supermarkets.

The five-course meal for 500 delegates at a week-long United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) event in the Kenyan capital included grilled sweet corn tamales, yellow lentil dal and mangomisu – a tropical version of the Italian dessert tiramisu.

The food was all reject-grade by the standards of European buyers, who sometimes cancel orders after produce has been harvested. The rejected food often rots or is fed to livestock because farmers produce more than local markets can absorb.

“No economic, environmental or ethical argument can be made to justify the extent of food waste and loss currently happening in the world,” said Achim Steiner, head of the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) which hosted the dinner.

“With this dinner, we are demonstrating to retailers, consumers and policymakers who can push for change that the astonishing amount of food we throw away is not just edible and nutritious, but also delicious,” he said.

A total of 1.7 tonnes of food was collected, both for the meal and as a donation to local charities.

Tristram Stuart, a British founder of the Feeding the 5000 campaign group that worked with UNEP, said farmers singled out supermarkets in Europe as the worst of their buyers abroad.

Fruit and vegetables were often rejected for cosmetic reasons such as colour or shape. French beans had to be exactly the right length, for instance, and any that were too long had to be cut short, with the ends fed to livestock.

“We are demonstrating the colossal scale of gratuitous waste, even in countries like Kenya where there are millions of hungry people,” he said. “The waste of perfectly edible, ‘ugly’ vegetables is endemic in our food production systems.” (Reporting By Alister Doyle, Environment Correspondent; Editing by Tom Pfeiffer)

Apple targeted by Java zero-day bug [UPDATE]

Last week, Facebook was attacked by a zero-day Java exploit. While the social network said that no personal data was stolen, it’s never too comforting when companies and services get hacked. This week, however, Apple was the target this time around, saying that a “small number” Mac computers have been infected.

Apple has confirmed the news to Reuters and say that they’re currently working with authorities to investigate the attacks, but luckily the Cupertino-based company says that “there was no evidence that any data left Apple.” Apple also plans to release a tool later today that will protect Mac users against the software used in the attacks.

UPDATE: Apple has released a new version of Java meant to plug up the vulnerability. It’s available now on Apple’s support page or through the Software Update tool on OS X.

However, the exploit was said to be spread from a website for software developers, so it seems regular consumers are okay at this point. Apple ended up identifying a small number of systems that were infected, but isolated them immediately to prevent further spreading of the bug. Since newer Macs ship without Java installed, most users shouldn’t worry, but the removal tool should provide a sense of ease anyway,

Similar attacks also targeted The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Twitter just recently. All companies affected said that no critical information was stolen, but of course, that didn’t make the situation much better. Twitter says that 250,000 accounts were hacked, resulting in conscience users to change their passwords right away.

Web denizens who regularly run Chrome or Safari are used to seeing PDFs in-browser, but their Firefox-using counterparts have had to settle for either a download or a third-party plugin. Other updates on the desktop involve more incremental CSS and startup speed tweaks, although Android users do receive theme support, Chinese localizations and lowered minimum hardware requirements. Russian Police Confiscate Meteorite Fragments from Enterprising Citizens

As you all know, last Friday a massive meteor entered the atmosphere over the Chelyabinsk Region of Russia. The meteor was large enough that scientists believe significant chunks reached the surface of the Earth. The meteor also caused quite a fireball in the sky and several explosions that shattered glass and injured over 1000 citizens in the area.

Russian citizens in the area are now trying to make a little bit of money by selling fragments that they claim to be from the meteorite online. However, Russian police are having none of that and have stepped in and begun to confiscate supposed meteorite fragments listed online. Russian police officials say that they confiscated about 60g of a substance claimed to be meteorite fragments from a Chelyabinsk resident.

Russian police say that they will send the material to be analyzed to determine its composition and determine if it poses any health risks. Officials are asking people not to buy the meteorite fragments because they are being sold without permits or certification. Fragments have turned up online selling for 10,000 to 500,000 rubles (~$330 to $16,600 USD.)

Blizzcon 2013 taking place on Novemeber 8th and 9th

At the annual BlizzCon convention, gamers from World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo all get together to witness the next big thing Blizzard has to offer. At BlizzCon 2013, players will be able to get a hands-on demonstration of the latest Blizzard games, become an audience to a discussion panel with Blizzard’s game developers and artists, have competitive, yet casual tournaments with other fellow gamers, compete in contests, purchase Blizzard’s gaming merchandice, and more. The global finals for the Battle.net World Champsionship Series will also be making its debut at BlizzCon 2013, where select top pro-gamers from all around the world will compete.

Blizzard wasn’t able to hold its annual BlizzCon event in 2012 because of the company’s jam-packed schedule. It was in the process of launching its latest installment of the Diablo series, Diablo 3, as well as the World of Wacraft: Mists of Panderia expansion. It was also in the process of developing its StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm expansion.

BlizzCon 2011 was a major success, and tickets sold out within seconds, so there’s no time to think once the tickets for BlizzCon 2013 goes on sale. While you’re thinking, someone else (or rather thousands of other people) will have already confirmed their purchase. You don’t want to be left out of Blizzard’s biggest event of the year. Blizzard has also launched a site that will let you book your hotel in advance with special BlizzCon rates. Will you be attending this year?
