GnomeZ is a new line of handmade and hand-painted resin zombie garden gnomes. The first in the series is Todd Grumble, a 10-inch-tall zombie definitely looks a little pissed off – probably because there are other zombie kids hanging and ripping apart the living on his front lawn.

USF Monster Tesla Coil Used To Play Super Mario Bros. Theme Song

We’ve seen tesla coils used for some pretty neat things recently like being used as a Nerf gun, but being able to bend electricity to your will in order to play the main theme song for Super Mario Bros. is probably one of the coolest things we’ve seen a tesla be used for.

Tampa’s University of South Florida X-Labs decided it was time to use their monster Tesla at full power in order to further show off their geekiness by having it play the theme song for Super Mario Bros. The video clip is short, but it’s nonetheless impressive seeing something that large, with that much power behind it, perform flawlessly.

According to the description of the YouTube video, the Tesla’s electrical arcs were over 10 feet with 220v of electricity pumped into the Tesla. It took two years for the X-Labs team to complete their monster Tesla, which resembled the one Nikola Tesla originally invented.

HTC One event teases big, flat, square device

If your curiosity wasn’t piqued before today for the HTC One event taking place tomorrow, it’s certainly about to be. The folks behind the wheel at the HTCGlobal Twitter account have just tweeted – or Instagramed, rather, a photo of a collection of devices with sheets over them, one of these devices appearing to be rather square in shape – and much larger than a smartphone. Could it be that another HTC Jetstream is on the way?

This big event is almost certainly set to be the home for the many-times-teased HTC One – aka HTC M7 device we’ve been drooling about for the past week or two. After that it’s all up to HTC to surprise the heck out of us from top to bottom. This photo shows what very well may be a timeline of smartphones the HTC crew has released since their inception as well, mind you, with the HTC tablets – large and small – amongst them.

Then again, there are some rather wild rumors that HTC will be releasing a tablet of some kind or another – a brand new one running something other than Android. Though such a rumor would be incredibly hard to substantiate – especially given HTC’s recent talk of creating less expensive Android smartphones as their next strategy, giving no word of tablets – the possibility always lingers. It may be time for HTC to pump up their efforts in the Sense for tablets arena, too!

It could also simply be an accessory – maybe a wireless charging pad? Quite likely is the idea that this unit is something less than central to the HTC strategy – but you never know!

Have a peek at the timeline below to check out all of the most recent HTC One news to see what we’re expecting tomorrow in the AM. Also follow along with HTC to see all the news up close and personal as we see it all in New York City as well as London! You can follow us right here in the main news feed or through our HTC tag portal!

Illinois School District Embraces Technology And Plans To Give 7000 iPads

Illinois School District Embraces Technology And Plans To Give 7000 iPadsPalatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 has gotten amazing results with its one-on-one experimental program, so much so, they have decided to give 6000 to 7000 students their own fourth generation Apple iPads. The original plan had put second generation iPad’s in the hands of about 1500 students and the feedback has been very positive. “We believe the one-to-one program is changing our teachers, it’s changing our instruction, and most importantly it’s changing the way in which students interact with their world,” said Daniel Cates, associate superintendent for administrative services.

The iPads come at a cost of between $1.25 and $1.43 million for a three year lease.  The cost will be covered through the district’s technology budget. The administration is considering plans to include all students in the plan by 2014-2015, as it has brought positive change in the schools. Other schools have joined the bandwagon as well, or plan to do so.

Teachers have also had encouraging things to say, from cutting down on paper use within the classrooms, to better attendance and participation from students and to helping out students with special needs. The devices have helped students who could not afford to have computers in their homes.  They are even helping teachers keep better checks on absenteeism.  Such plans go a long way in reshaping lives. Would you be interested if your school gave you a new iPad?

Korean mass transit moving towards wireless power

The world is slowly making the switch over to electric power, and while some mass transit systems have been powered by electricity for a while, it’s usually delivered through overhead cables that connect to the buses and trains at all times. However, Korea is moving away from overhead cables in favor of wireless power to its mass transit vehicles.

Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have ended up making major strides in powering mass transit systems over wireless protocols. The systems are called On-line Electric Vehicles (OLEV), and are actually already being tested on Korean roads today. If all goes well, they may switch to the new system permanently.

The technology uses inductive charging to wirelessly transmit electricity from the ground to coils underneath the floor of electric vehicles. The ground has embedded power cables that transmit electricity to the pick-up coils. So far during testing, engineers have recorded an 85% transmission efficiency with the cables and coils.

The technology is similar to what Utah State University is currently doing. Back in December, they introduced an inductive charging technology that involved the same wireless method, which would allows city buses to quickly charge up while waiting at a bus stop, an initiative that would cut down the amount of fuel needed drastically.

China Expected To Surpass U.S. With 246M Android, iOS Devices This Month

China Expected To Surpass U.S. With 246M Android, iOS Devices This Month

When Tim Cook made a visit to China earlier this year, he was quoted as saying the country could potentially become Apple’s largest market in the future. It looks as though Cook was right as a report published today believes China is expected to pass the U.S. for active iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, which would make the country the largest market for both devices.

The report comes from analytics firm Flurry as they’ve tracked over 2.4 billion app sessions a day across over 275,000 applications, which leads them to being able to accurately measure mobile device activity for over 90 percent of all of the world’s smartphones and tablets. In their report, Flurry says China was recorded as having 221 million active Android and iOS devices, while the U.S. had 222 million. By the end of February, Flurry is estimating China will have 246 million devices, while the U.S. has 230 million.

PlayStation 4 backwards compatibility to be entirely virtualized

Sony will be taking complete advantage of its purchase of Gaikai, and it’s cloud gaming services, for its soon-to-be-announced PlayStation 4. According to a recent tip from The Wall Street Journal, and a teaser video just released by Sony, we see that all signs are pointing to the PlayStation 4 being backwards compatible with PlayStation 3 games through a total streaming service with Gaikai.

PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games

Previously, it was speculated that PlayStation 3 games would not be backwards compatible with the PlayStation 4 because the PlayStation 4 would be utilizing a new AMD x86 chip. The chip would be incompatible with the architecture in the previous consoles. Gaikai’s cloud-gaming service would be the solution to that. Also, it’s speculated that with the Gaikai cloud-gaming streaming service, PlayStation 3 titles may not just be limited to the PlayStation 4. It could be streamed to the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3 itself, and even tablets and smartphones. Of course, it’s up to Sony to utilize it that way.

Gaikai will not be streaming PlayStation 4 titles because the max resolution it can output is 720p. Streaming the games would also require Gaikai servers to be relatively close to Playstation 4 users, and for the users to have a great internet connection. Gaikai only has experience streaming PC games, so even streaming PlayStation 3 will be a new challenge for the company.

The PlayStation 4 is speculated to cost about 40,000 yen, or $400, and it will be announced at Sony’s press conference in just two days. There, we will hear the details of the console and all it’s glory. It was just recently brought to our attention that Gaikai would be attending the conference as well, leading us to believe that the two have a huge, joint announcement for all of us.
