Mycestro Is A 3D Mouse For Your Fingertips That You’ll Look Funny Using, But Who Cares?

Screenshot_2_18_13_12_10_PM

We all go through phases where we feel like we’ve seen every possible Kickstarter project that we’d ever want. And then one like Mycestro comes along and reminds us that this is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s a 3D mouse that you strap to one of your fingers and it looks like it could become a huge asset for multi-tasking.

If you think about how you use your computer, be it a desktop or laptop, you know that your hands move from the keyboard to the trackpad or mouse constantly, over and over again. It’s wasted movement for the most part, especially when you see the possibilities that Mycestro unlocks. The only thing left is for it to get funded, because it looks like all of the prototypes work perfectly.

Its founder and creator, Nick Mastandrea, has been tinkering on this project for quite a while, having been featured in Engadget a few years ago, but it looks like it’s ready for primetime. You’ll be able to pick one up for a $79 pledge in white, or $99 with your choice of color. The estimated shipping date is sometime in October of this year, if all goes well.

Have a look at some of its features, which include touch buttons that allow you to navigate your computer without the need for moving your entire hand to a dedicated area on a computer, thanks to 3D technology and space recognition:

Here are the specs for the 3D Mouse:

– Size of a wireless earpiece.
– Light, weighing next to nothing.
– Internal battery can be charged via USB.
– Battery life is estimated to be eight hours depending on usage.
– Two different replaceable clip sizes.

This isn’t a completely perfect situation though, as you’ll have to re-learn how to use a mouse. The other thing is that if you’re in a coffee shop or somewhere in public, people are going to look at you like you have some issues. The thing is called the Mycestro for a reason; it looks like you’re conducting your own private orchestra. In other words, you’re going to look weird. If you’re okay with that, then the benefits outweigh the public shame and looks you might receive.

The device works from 30 feet away from your computer, thanks to Bluetooth, so you could use this for presentations at work. The touch technology it has reminds me of Google’s Project Glass, which allows you to tap a panel on the side of the wearable device to make things happen, like a mouse or trackpad. The other plus is that it’ll work with any iPad or iPhone, with Android support coming by the end of the year. This could be a nice way to have a lean-back experience with a tablet, or do the driving while someone else holds it.

Check out this demo using it with an Internet-enabled TV:

It reminds me of the Xbox Kinect a little bit, but it’s in your hand and requires no setup.

With 38 days left to go on its Kickstarter campaign, Nick Mastandrea and his team has raised $39,735 out of $100,000. I think if people can look past the Mycestro as a curious oddity and understand how this could make them more efficient on the computer, this thing will get funded, and then some. The team says that a version for lefties will come a bit after the original model. Personally, I use the trackpad and mouse with my right hand, even though I’m a lefty.

So who cares if people think you’re making hand gestures into thin air to nobody in particular. Aren’t people who use Bluetooth headsets already weird? Exactly.

Doom 320 x 240 Screenshot Remastered To 9,600 x 7,211 Photoshop Art

One of the most influential first-person shooters ever has to be id Software’s Doom. Since it’s release back on December 10, 1993, we’ve seen three official sequels with Doom 4 planned to be released on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time in the future.

Over the years, Doom has received some nice improved visuals, but the original game’s classic graphics and art style have been left somewhat untouched each time the game is “improved” to be played on modern-day consoles. Deviant Art member Elemental79 decided one of the more classic screenshots from Doom needed to be improved from its original resolution of 320 x 240 pixels to a jaw-dropping 9,600 x 7,211 pixel image. This Bladeless Fan Is Your Beautiful-Appliance Deal of the Day

While the Dyson Air Multiplier looks nothing like a conventional fan — it more closely resembles a quidditch goal — it’s actually a fully functional appliance that got quite a bit of attention when it came out. Although Dyson touts the Air Multiplier as bladeless, it actually has a tiny fan hidden inside the body that pushes the air through the loop. If you’re worried about power, this Dyson blows with the best of them. It can output 162 gallons of air per second, which is a fair amount of air for a consumer fan, but let’s be honest: you don’t want this because it’s a better fan (although it is significantly quieter than a conventional fan), but because it would look amazing in your apartment. Throne of Nerds: A Song of USB and QWERTY

The iron throne is made up of many many sharp swords, but what would a throne look like in a nerd kingdom? Well, it would probably look something like this Throne of Nerds, covered with keyboards everywhere.

This throne will not cut those who sit upon it. If anything the keys will provide some minimal cushioning for your backside. It was made by Mike DeWolfe, a computer programmer from Canada.

He warped the keyboards and even scorched almost all of the ESC keys to symbolize how impossible it can be escape suffering and blackness. Mike sounds like a cheery guy. I’m not living in his nerd kingdom. The only key that is left undamaged is the ESC key on the highest positioned keyboard.

In back, the keyboard cables have been arranged like human hair that is roughly braided, but not really. It is a tangle. This shows how good plans and order can degenerate into chaos. Or it’s just a cool chair made out of old keyboards. You decide.

V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Review: over-ear excellence strikes again

This week we’ve had a look (or a listen, rather) to the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 over-ear headphones, the newest in a line of hardcore solutions from the team that brought you some of the best ear-blasting sound machines we’ve got in our review archives. This newest design is what the company calls “crowdsourced” as they’ve made the creation process one where more people were involved than on any previous project in the company – audiophiles, producers, editors, and DJs alike. The end product is a pair of headphones that sound just as good or better than the Limited Edition LP2s we saw last year (and the original LPs back in 2010) in a slightly more compact setup – a win win!

beappa0000

With the Crossfade M-100 model you’ve got 50MM “Dual-Diaphragm” Drivers with dual inputs at the bottom of either shell. You can plug your cord into the bottom of your rightphone and on the left you’ve got a real-deal V-CORK to seal the deal. Unlike most solutions that simply leave the second port open, V-MODA provides a couple of rubbery plastic corks you can use to keep your innards safe from environmental harm – simple and useful!

pluggedup

You’ve got hardcore quality with this set of phones as well, bringing on some rather extreme promises from the V-MODA crew, starting with kevlar-reinforced detachable cables complete with 45-degree plug strain relief – on both cords, mind you. These cords can withstand bends “more than 1 million times” according to V-MODA, this being, again according to the company, “over 100x industry standards.”

orange

Both cords are rather fabulous to work with, also, one of them a “SharePlay” audio cable that’s able to bust out another port right through the first, the other a SpeakEasy mic cable that allows you to work with a built-in microphone solution. The color scheme here is black and orange – if you didn’t already notice – this a rather unique way of providing differentiation at first glance from earlier models and bringing on one of three different color combinations.

port

You’ve got a choice between Matte Black, Shadow, and White Silver combinations – and like previous V-MODA over-ear solutions, you also get extra shield customizability as well. While there aren’t replacement shields in the box like there were for the LP2 Limited Edition model, you can order extras when you head to the V-MODA online store – and get custom engravings, as well. You’ll be paying $310 USD for the phones themselves, then a shield kit will cost you an additional $25.

folded

These phones extend out for the largest of heads and fold up and in with V-MODA’s own “CliqFold” system to get as small as possible for easy mobility. You also get a shell for extra protection and portability, this holding every bit of gear you get in the box. You’ll also find that you’re getting a 2 Year + Immortal Life 50% deal with this purchase as well – that’s V-MODA’s way of saying “thank you” for joining their team – discounts forever.

shell

These phones work with frequency response between 5 and 30 kHz and have a sensitivity of 103 dB @ 1kHz 1mW. The Crossfade M-100s are the highest quality headphones V-MODA has ever offered, audio and all. Here you’ll find that the biggest difference between the LP2 model we’ve heard before and the M-100 is the base, first of all – when the deepness matters the most, a round punch in the drum is what you’ll heard the hardest on the M-100s.

In the end, it’s all about refinement. V-MODA’s Crossfade M-100 headphones are the finest combination of sound quality, tactile quality, and comfort I’ve experienced at this price range in a pair of headphones – only the LP2s come close. These headphones will be your go-to choice for everyday listening and will be the pair you grab when you’re about to board a 10 hour overseas flight – I know I will.

Bill Gates discusses Microsoft and their mobile sector

In an interview with CBS, Bill Gates talks to Charlie Rose about his life, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and more interestingly Microsoft. He says that the way that Microsoft went about the mobile industry didn’t allow them to get the leadership they needed. He says that they should have entered the market earlier in order to get the lead on cell phones and that “it’s clearly a mistake”.

Bill Gates discusses Microsoft and its mobile devices

Bill Gates says he and CEO Steve Ballmer are “2 of the most self-critical people”. He says that “There were a lot of amazing things that Steve’s leadership got done with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is a key to the future, the Surface computer, Bing – people are seeing as a better search product, Xbox“. Gates says that due to the self-critical nature of both him and Ballmer, they feel like they could better.

Bill Gates also discusses sleep and that he needs at least 7 hours of sleep, or else his “IQ begins to drop”. He wishes that he could be like other people who can thrive off only 4 hours of sleep. He is a night person and he “gets very excited about something that’s going wrong or right”. He would sometimes stay up until 2:00 A.M., which would prove to be difficult if he had an appointment early in the morning.

Alongside the talks of Microsoft, Bill Gates says that he wants to introduce a new high school course that brings together Science and History. He is also working on innovations in cheap and clean energy. While they weren’t able to get the lead on the mobile market, it seems that Microsoft is doing well in catching-up in the industry. Their Windows 8 mobile devices are starting to get traction in the industry, and hopefully with the release of Windows Blue, they’ll be seen as a major competitor.

LG Invests $655 Million Into Making Cheaper OLED Screens

LG Invests $655 Million Into Making Cheaper OLED ScreensLG is all set to invest $655 million into mass producing organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels that’s can be used in Televisions. Production will commence in an existing plant in South Korea and mass production is expected by 2014.

LG has already invested money in the OLED technology and has created prototype units, like this LG EA9800 curved OLED TV.  Unfortunately the cost of creating OLED screens did not make a viable project, but now, LG is all set to create cheaper screens. The biggest hurdle in LG’s way of investment was a hefty lawsuit from rival Samsung, which had accused LG of stealing OLED technology. LG had counter sued Samsung as well.  The lawsuit had been going for 18 months and was just dropped last week. Now that the company no longer has legal worries, its plan of pumping money can get underway.

OLED technology is a successor to liquid crystal display (LCD) technology and is known to deliver better brightness and image quality. They are also quite energy efficient, but have been quite expensive, which should change. LG plans on creating 55-inch OLED HDTV, in the low power range. We will have to wait for 2014 to see if the promise of cheaper OLED televisions becomes a reality

NYT says Tesla Model S review the result of shaky judgment, Musk calls it even

NYT Tesla Model S review the result of shaky judgment, not conspiracy

The dust-up over the New York Times‘ Tesla Model S review may have left no real winners, but that doesn’t preclude at least trying to reach the truth. According to the newspaper’s Public Editor, Margaret Sullivan, the final answer rests where it often does: in between the two extremes. Following interviews with driver John Broder, Tesla staff and others involved in the tale, the scrutineer believes the review was conducted honestly, but that improper decisions and less-than-precise notes led to the charging woes and accusations of deception that characterized the drive. Broder should have topped up the way the company recommends, but wasn’t planning on dragging anyone through the mud, Sullivan says. Whatever you think of her verdict, it’s enough for Tesla founder Elon Musk to relax — he’s already saying that the inspection “restored” his trust in the Old Gray Lady’s integrity. About the only demand we have left is to get enough Supercharger stations that there’s never a repeat incident.
