OUYA CREATE Game Jam winners burst forth

In order to get game developers to contribute to the OUYA project, OUYA and Kill Screen collaborated together and launched the CREATE Game Jam. The event was a massive success for OUYA, drawing in around 165 game developers. They drew in developers with special grand prizes, like a $20,000 grand prize, and a $5000 prize for each winner in the specialized categories.

OUYA and Kill Screen announce the winner of the CREATE Game Jam

After several weeks, both Kill Screen and OUYA finally have a king to crown in their contest. The game, Strange Happenings on Murder Island, developed by FreeLives, has been crowned the Grand Prize winner of the entire event, scoring them the coveted prize of $20,000. Strange Happenings is an odd, Minecraft-esque game, packed with gun violence, dinosaurs, and possibly drug-induced levels. We can definitely see the entertainment aspect of the game.

There were also 6 special categories in which the winners won the $5000 each. The winner for the “Most Surprising” award was ‘Television’ by Laboratory Games LLC. The winner of the “Four Bright Buttons and Two Joysticks” award was ‘Bombball’ by E McNeill. The winner of the “Most Immersive” award was ‘Whispering Willows’ by Night Light Interactive. The winner of the “Pop Your Eyes Out” award was ‘Pipnis’ by Santa Ragione. The winner of the “Best Couch with Friends” award was ’2D Cube Zombie Platformer’ by Molinware. And finally, the “Best Game Created Using the Unity Engine” award went to ‘Stikbold’ by Team Stikbold.

So congratulations to all of the winners. It was also a huge win for OUYA as well. Not only will the winners of each category be included in the OUYA gaming system, but every other game that competed should be available for the system too. These games are optimized to be played on the OUYA system, and they should make the Kickstarter product that much more appealing when it finally hits the stores in June.

The Obama Administration’s Newest Project: Map The Human Brain

The Obama Administration’s Newest Project: Map The Human BrainThe Obama Administration has announced plans to map the human brain in a decade long research project.  The project is in the works to be unveiled by March and hopes to do for the brain exactly what the “Human Genome Project” did for “genetics” as reported by the The New York Times. The Human Genome Project identified all the genes in the human DNA that helped understand disease and their treatment, human evolution and many other areas.

The project which could cost billions of dollars will be announced with the annual budget proposal.  Although the actual cost of the project as well as the amount it will get from federal funding is unknown, but it seems that the Obama Administration is highly invested in the project. “Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy — every dollar/ Today our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer’s. They’re developing drugs to regenerate damaged organs, devising new materials to make batteries 10 times more powerful. Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation” President Obama said during his State of the Union address.

The project could do very well for the economy, as was the Human Genome Project, which cost $3.8 billion to complete, and as per federal research has returned almost $800 billion by 2010. The project could possibly transform the brain research industry and create jobs in the research sector.

TMNT Patrol Buggy: Ninja Turtles, Assemble!

One of the buried treasures at last week’s New York Toy Fair was this cool buggy I found hiding out in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles booth. Basically, it’s like a mega buggy that can seat all four Ninja Turtles, but can also break off into individual cars.

The Patrol Buggy line comes in individual rides for Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, and then they can snap together to form the giant   four-turtle mega buggy shown above.

You can also connect two of the vehicles together and launch either Leo and his rocket grenade, or Raph and his road rash missile towards their foes.tmnt buggy 2

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles patrol buggies will sell for $19.99(USD) each when they arrive this August, and are compatible with standard TMNT action figures (each sold separately.)

Who Needs to Knit When You Can Use a Lego Machine that Makes Clothes Automagically?

There are many things you probably don’t know about Lego. One of them, however, is not the fact that you can build anything with it, from sorting M&Ms to an an entire house. This awesome Lego loom is another example of this. More »

Best Chicago ‘Harlem Shake:’ UIC’s Tau Kappa Epsilon Wins HuffPost Poll (VIDEOS)

Last Friday, we rounded up some of our favorite locally-made “Harlem Shake” videos and asked our readers to help us choose the cream of the ever-growing crop.

We asked, and you told us: through Monday, nearly 1,900 votes were tallied and the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity came out on top with a decisive victory, receiving about one-third of all votes cast. The 12th floor boys of Loyola University Chicago’s Mertz Hall came in second and University of Chicago students narrowly edged the Groupon crew to receive the third-most votes.

Burger King Twitter account hacked to show McDonald’s superiority [UPDATE]

Hacking into systems and servers to play some harmless pranks isn’t anything new, but today Burger King’s official Twitter account was breached and the hackers appeared to be die-hard McDonald’s fans, because they ended up changing the page’s branding to the McDonald’s logo and name, and mentioned that Burger King “just got sold to McDonald’s because the Whopper flopped.”

burger-king-twitter

Burger King’s Twitter account, which has almost 90,000 followers, was made to look like McDonald’s own Twitter feed, with a McDonald’s logo and all. The only difference was that the username remained unchanged. Many of the tweets beared the hashtag “#DFNCTSC”, which seem to suggest that the hackers behind this comical trick are a part of the Defonic Team Screen Name Club, who are best known for hacking into Paris Hilton’s phone.

The hackers continued to tweet for 30 minutes before the account was finally suspended for the time being. Tweets were filled with text, photos, and videos that made fun of Burger King and its employees, including a couple of tweets mentioning employees doing drugs in the bathroom. The rest of the tweets were pretty random and some didn’t really make sense.

Twitter has recently been a huge target for hackers, with over 250,000 passwords leaked from a hacker who broke into the service’s servers. This also isn’t the first time that verified accounts, and popular Twitter users have been targeted. Major League Baseball was recently hacked, as well as the New York Yankees account, which made fun of Derek Jeter.

UPDATE: We’ve received some stats about the hacking from Unmetric regarding the Twitter account. The number of followers that the account gained jumped from 83,000 to 110,000 within 60 minutes, and the hackers sent a total of 55 tweets before the account was eventually suspended, 33 of which were either replies or retweets. McDonald’s also chimed in on the Burger King hack, assuring users that they had nothing to do with the fiasco.

Mimobot’s US Presidents flash drives give Americans patriotic storage

Mimobot's Lincoln, Washington flash drives give Americans patriotic storage

We wouldn’t have foreseen thumb drives figuring prominently into our President’s Day observations, and yet… here we are. In sync with the holiday, Mimoco has kicked off a US Presidents collection of Mimobot storage that lets Americans carry their national pride on their USB 2.0 ports. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are the only current options — what, no William Henry Harrison model? — but the 8GB to 64GB of capacity should keep either stick useful once the novelty wears off. As long as you’re prepared to spend between $20 to $130 to pick one up, either of the Mimobots is a decent choice for a drive. Just hurry if you want a flash-based replica of the country’s key founder — there’s only 1,000 Washington drives to go around.

Presidential Poll Shows Bill Clinton Topping New Jerseyans’ Lists

Just in time for President’s Day, a new poll shows Bill Clinton topping New Jersey residents’ list of favorite presidents.

In a Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press survey, 22 percent of New Jerseyans named Clinton as their all-time favorite president. Coming in at number two is Ronald Reagan, who topped 16 percent of respondents’ lists, dropping from 24 percent in 2010.

“Three years ago, Ronald Reagan garnered the most support of any president in our poll, but he seems to have lost some of that support to the nation’s first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln,” poll director Patrick Murray writes.

Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack Leaked

Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack LeakedScreenshots of the upcoming Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack has leaked before the official release, and this would definitely have put a damper on Bungie’s big reveal. However, I am quite sure that fans of Halo would not be upset at all, as any information released concerning the Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack before its official date would be more than welcome fodder, at least to keep them happy for the moment. This leak happened over the weekend, just hours before the major Bungie Destiny reveal, where this upcoming DLC is said to introduce a fair number of stunning new multiplayer settings.

What you see above would be called “Monolith,” while the other two are known as “Landfall” and “Skyline.” Hmmm, nice wordplay, that, especially when you consider you can call those “Skyfall” and “Landline” instead. But I digress – nary a word concerning the release date or other additional details surrounding the Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack have been revealed, so we intend to keep our eyes peeled on this case.
