CREATE Game Jam declares its winners, picks the cream of the OUYA crop video

Kill Screen wanted to jumpstart OUYA game development with its Create Game Jam, and it turns out that there were more than a few takers — 165, to be exact. That makes the grand prize winner, FreeLives’ Strange Happenings on Murder Island, something special. The top-down action game’s dinosaur rampages and Minecraft-like art were wild enough to earn the developer $20,000 and a head start in what’s increasingly becoming a crowded field. Other developers weren’t entirely left out, as winners in specialized categories still received $5,000 each. There’s no guarantee that the results of Create will resonate with gamers in the long run; if they lead to a better selection for an untested console, though, they’ll have been worth the effort.

Sprint’s 4G LTE Network Available For San Francisco

Sprint’s 4G LTE Network Available For San FranciscoSprint has added new locations to its 4G LTE network, mainly in the San Francisco area, New York City and Washington, D.C as s part of their nationwide rollout of the 4G LTE network. The service seems to be great in some neighborhoods, while not so good in others.

The site deployment has started in San Francisco and coverage will become better as more sites are added.  The sites being added are an addition to 58 locations announced by Sprint in January.  More sites will be added later and announced once Sprint reaches good coverage .

According to Engadget’s testing team, the highest speed they could get was 16.7Mbps for download and 9.4Mbps for uploads.  The service seems to vary location wise and it seems reliable in Potrero Hill and South of Market areas. Sprint is  following a strategy where it’s launching the 4G LTE network in locations and then getting customer feedback.  Although Sprint has not been able to completely follow its projected network launch area, but they seem to be doing well and should have the network updated before the end of 2013.

Opera cuts down its workforce by 10%

Opera has just reported that it lost about 91 of its employees, which amounts to almost 10% of its workforce. Half of the employees were developers for the software company, and the reason for the cut was due to Opera’s decision to switch over to the open-source WebKit browser. The switch left the company with 840 employees last quarter, down from the 931 that it had previously had.

Opera cuts down its workforce by 10 percent

Opera has stated that the restructuring of the company due to the switch actually cost around $7.8 million. Due to Opera switching from it’s old proprietary, rendering engine, Presto, to WebKit, many of the jobs at the company became obsolete. Opera stated that the workers left voluntarily after they had received their severance packages. Opera was kind enough to help many of the workers find new jobs within the industry.

Opera also stated that because of the switch to WebKit, it didn’t need to dedicate a majority of its resources to improving Presto. All it needed to do was contribute to the open-source WebKit community. With that, some of Opera’s key engineers were transferred to more product-specific roles within the company.

Opera believes that with the company switching to WebKit, and with its recent acquisition of Skyfire, the company is about to start its new, exciting chapter. It had recently announced that over 300 million users are using its product on a daily basis, and it’s ready to do something big to one-up itself. It will show off a glimpse of what it’s been working on at the Mobile World Congress next week.

Harrison Ford Rumored to Appear in Star Wars: Episode VII

I’ve been undeniably excited at the thought of new Star Wars films coming to theaters. We already know that J.J. Abrams will be directing Episode VII, which is expected in theaters in the next few years. What remains unclear is exactly what timeframe the new film will cover.

A new rumor has surfaced that points to a timeframe at least 30 years after the events that happened in the original films. The source of this rumor comes from the fact that Harrison Ford is rumored to have signed on for the film. The original report came from Latino Review’s “El Mayimbe” who claims to have triple checked the information before breaking the story.

old han solo

For what it’s worth, Slate reports that this particular publication has a good track record in breaking rumors such as this one. So far, Disney has offered no confirmation that Harrison Ford will be participating in any upcoming Star Wars film. So far, rumors for the new film indicate that it will focus on the children of Han Solo and Princess Leia, in which case a cameo from Ford would seem appropriate – even though the actor is now over 70 years old.

Israeli Lunatic Sniper Instagrams a Photo of a Child in His Crosshairs

The Israeli Defense Forces has a history of overzealous campaigns on its official social media accounts. So maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that an IDF sniper doesn’t take his job very seriously. Or that’s the impression we get, since he Instagrammed a photo of what appears to be a Palestinian child in the crosshairs of his rifle scope. Real, real messed up. More »

Apple A7 CPU Spotted?

Apple A7 CPU Spotted? The iPhone 5 sure as heck is due for an update, and so far initial rumors have pointed to a handset that is aptly known as the iPhone 5S. Of course, we are not ruling out the possibility that we could be looking at an iPhone 6, but history has dictated so far that the iPhone 5S would be a far better bet. Well, the closer to the new generation iPhone’s launch, the higher the chances of one of the parts suppliers cracking under pressure, including an image of the alleged new motherboard in the handset that depicts an Apple A7 chipset. This A7 chipset will definitely continue from where the iPhone 5’s A6 left off.

Word has it that the Apple A7 chipset will double the number of CPU cores and RAM, which means we could very well be looking at a quad-core 1.2GHz A7 processor and 2GB RAM, where the latter’s clock speed would have slowed down a wee bit. There are also whispers of the GPU being the quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4.

We would like to ask this though, will Apple continue to use the Cortex A9 CPU cores, or will they make the jump to something more fancy like the A15 like Tegra 4 and the Exynos 5 Octa?

New Nexus Smartphones To Come With Fantastic Cameras?

New Nexus Smartphones To Come With Fantastic Cameras?Right now, you can more or less say that Sony Mobile has the best working cameras on smartphones with the sensor that they use, although the folks over at Nokia also would want to put in their 2 cents’ worth. Well, it seems that future generations of Nexus smartphones and tablets from Google (under the pretense of the Internet search giant’s name, of course, where manufacturing will still take place at established hardware players’ factories) will arrive with “insanely great cameras”, according to Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president of engineering.

Gundotra continued to say that they are “committed to making Nexus phones insanely great cameras. Just you wait and see.” Well, we are definitely waiting in patience, Gundotra, and would love to see it – so will you hurry up and make sure that we can get a closer look at these insanely great cameras sooner rather than later? One thing’s for sure, Google I/O would be a more likely platform for such cameras in Nexus devices to be unveiled rather than at MWC 2013 that is happening real soon. We’ll be at both events on the ground with our eyes peeled, so stay tuned!

Microsoft Job Postings Confirm Additional Windows And Windows Phone Blue Details

Microsoft Job Postings Confirm Additional Windows And Windows Phone Blue DetailsThere is nothing quite like a job posting to reveal information on upcoming projects, as we have seen that happen time and again in the past. Well, one of the more recent job postings by Microsoft did claim that Windows Blue will include user experience improvements, apart from just interface tweaks that happen underneath the proverbial hood. Not only that, there was also a reference to ‘Windows Phone Blue’ spotted on Microsoft’s job site, now how about that?

This should be taken as a surefire confirmation that the Windows client team is currently working on the upcoming Blue refresh of Windows 8. In the job posting, the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE) which is said to be heavily involved in making improvements to the start screen, application lifecycle, windowing and personalization, will also improve on the mentioned operating system components in Windows Blue. An excerpt of the job description reads as follows :

We’re looking for an excellent, experienced SDET to join the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE). The Core Experience features are the centerpiece of the new Windows UI, representing most of what customers touch and see in the OS, including: the start screen; application lifecycle; windowing; and personalization. Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide.

Rock Band weekly DLC ending in April

It’s a sad day for Rock Band junkies as developer Harmonix has announced that weekly DLC — consisting of a few new songs that get released every week — will end towards the beginning of April, with April 2 being the last week for Rock Band weekly DLC. The developer announced the news this morning and said that they’re wanting to focus on other projects for the future.

Rock-Band-Blitz-screenshot-580x326

Harmonix has managed to release weekly content for Rock Band for 275 consecutive weeks containing over 4,000 songs in total. However, the developer has been scaling back production of Rock Band DLC as they are beginning to make the transition to other projects. Harmonix says they have several new titles in development, and they want to start putting more focus on those in the future. However, no future Rock Band releases are planned.

From now until April 2, Harmonix will release the rest of the Rock Band Blitz songs, as well as various “Pro Guitar” upgrades, as well as songs by artists that have not previously appeared in a Rock Band title. From here on out, Harmonix will not be licensing anymore songs, and will take the rest of the time to roll out the songs that they already have licenses for.

Claiming the largest music library of any game available, Harmonix will be continuing its ongoing DLC sale of 50% off over 1,100 songs as a personal thank you to all the fans who helped make the DLC possible, and to help players continue to build their personal libraries from the back catalog.
