How Google Makes Android Understand You

It’s the future, and that being the case, you’re going to want to talk to your smartphone and have it make heads or tails of what you’re saying. Getting that to work can be a pretty tough job however, unless your phone can learn like a human. And as Wired explains, that’s exactly what Google’s Jelly Bean operating system does. More »

MIT and US Army crafting uniforms with full-body fiberoptic sensors

MIT and US Army crafting uniforms with stealthy fiberoptic communication, sensors

Militaries want soldiers to carry an increasing amount of tech on to the battlefield, but that isn’t necessarily convenient — or comfortable. MIT and the US Army have started early work on uniforms with fiberoptic sensors that would alleviate much of that burden. By weaving in microfibers cut from a mix of specialized, fluidized materials, the partnership can build data links that cover the entire body without breaking or adding significant bulk. They could serve as basic elements of a communication system, but MIT has broader ambitions: the sensors could track wounds through heat signatures, and just might prevent friendly fire incidents by sending a don’t-shoot signal when targeted with a laser sight. The fibers still have to get much thinner before the Army can offer smart uniforms as standard issue, but the wearable tech may keep soldiers nimble and, just possibly, save a few lives.

Bungie Announces Sci-Fi Video Game Destiny

The creators of the incredibly popular Halo franchise have announced a new project they are working on called Destiny. The video game will introduce players to an epic science fiction universe, including a persistent online world filled with sweeping adventures.

destiny

Destiny promises to combine a first-person action game with persistent, dynamic world – offering console players a connected living world they can explore combined with social spaces where they can congregate and celebrate achievements. The game will allow players to adventure as a group or alone.

The game will be set in the distant future with players acting as guardians of the last city on Earth. Players will explore the ruins of our solar system from Mars to Venus and battle enemies of humankind to reclaim what was lost during the collapse of mankind’s Golden Age.

Destiny is being published by Activision and is tentatively planned for a December 31 release on the Xbox 360 and PS3. It is rumored to be a launch title for the Xbox 720 and/or the PS4 as well. Sadly, there is no mention of a PC version at this point.

EA discounting iOS Games for up to 90% off during President’s Day sale

Today is 1st US president George Washington’s birthday, which also marks President’s Day in the US. To celebrate, Electronic Arts is discounting over 55 of its games, some of which you can grab for as much as 90% off their normal price. This means that every single one of their games on sale is only $0.99, even their iPad games.

Screen Shot 2013-02-18 at 11.39.53 AM

Some workers have today off, since President’s Day is a national holiday, so if you’re one of those people, it seems like EA is giving you something to do on your day off. Games like Mass Effect Infiltrator, Dead Space 3, and a handful of Need for Speed titles are only $0.99 on the iPhone, while Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Mirror’s Edge, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 are on sale as well on the iPad.

Other iPhone that are receiving heavy discounts include Madden NFL 12, Monopoly Millionaire, Risk, The Sims 3 series, Shift 2 Unleashed, and a couple of Yahtzee titles. As for the iPad, many of the iPhone games are also on sale for the iOS tablet, but there are also a few exclusives, including Battleship, Command & Conquer Red Alert, NBA Jam, and SimCity Deluxe.

The sale ends today, so if you’ve been thinking about getting one of these games, be sure to hurry your way home from work (if you don’t happen to have the day off) and take advantage of these deals while they last. Electronic Arts didn’t say exactly when the sale will end, but we’re guessing that when the clock strikes midnight tonight, the sale will vanish into thin air.

Mobile Data Volume Grows, Appetite Among Users Are Insatiable

Mobile Data Volume Grows, Appetite Among Users Are InsatiableWith the advent of mobile devices that are data-centric, it goes without saying that more and more of us are hooked to a mobile device, be it a tablet or a smartphone, that requires us to remain connected all the time to the Internet if we were to make the most out of it. Well, having said that, it is then not surprising to read that mobile data volumes have grown exponentially yet again last year, doubling in the year 2012 itself. The main reason for its accelerated growth did not hinge entirely on 4G LTE only, as the leap in smartphone subscribers in China proved to be another telling contributing factor.

This particular data is the result of network equipment manufacturer Ericsson’s work, where mobile data usage in Q4 2011 and Q4 2012 was compared. Not only that, subscriptions for mobile broadband also increased by 50% thereabouts year-on-year, and when you translate that to the number of human heads, it means more than 4.4 billion mobile subscribers are walking on the face of the earth – amazing! Nokia might want to think of shutting down its featurephone business now…

Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update Arrives

Samsung Galaxy Note Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Update ArrivesFolks who own the Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) will be pleased to hear that the long awaited Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update has finally arrived and ready for your download. The rollout is said to be gradual, meaning it will happen in stages, but so far initial reports from users worldwide do seem to point towards a generally favorable reception. What does this latest Android update bring to the tablet? Pardon the pun there.

For starters, the operating system will be bumped all the way to version 4.1.2. Yes, I know, it is not exactly cutting edge since it would miss out on Android 4.2 as with other more recent devices, but at least this means you will be able to enjoy some Project Butter goodness, in addition to other stuff such as Google Now, a new customizable notification area, Multi-View, new gallery, Pop-up Play, Smart Rotation, Page Buddy, continuous keyboard input, and Samsung Cloud services, among others. If you have yet to receive the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update on your Galaxy Note, patience is the keyword here. Nice to see Samsung roll it out earlier than expected.

Burglar Breaks $100k Glass Door To Steal $64k Of Goods At Apple Store

Burglar Breaks $100k Glass Door To Steal $64k Of Goods At Apple StoreHmmm, Apple Stores do seem to be a rather decent robbery target as of late, considering how highly sought after Apple products are. Not only that, as Apple continues to churn out incredibly thin and light MacBooks (regardless of whether they are the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro), in addition to the highly desirable Apple iPhone, you can be sure that getting rid of stolen stock on the black market should net a successful Apple Store robbery some handsome cash. Well, apparently an Apple Store in Boulder, Colorado was robbed, being stripped of $64,000 worth of goods.

Unfortunately, the custom glass door that was broken using an old school method of throwing rocks at it proved to be more expensive than the booty that was stolen. In fact, the custom glass door at the Apple Store cost nearly $100,000, clearly making the damage nearly twice as costly than the merchandize carted away. Some of the Apple items stolen were MacBooks, iPads and iPhones. Why don’t they just steal the door the next time instead?

Apple releases new iPad TV ads focusing on app catalog

One thing that Apple has going for them is their massive collection of hundreds of thousands of apps specifically catered toward the iPad, and to show off some of the more notable ones, as well as boast about the variety of apps available, the company has released two new TV ads that quickly go through a selection of cool apps.

Screen Shot 2013-02-18 at 11.10.00 AM

Each of the ads, titled “Alive” and “Together”, go through various adjectives and show off an app that describes that specific adjective. Each of the adjectives are “randomly” selected from a fast randomizer of different words, similar to how you hit a question mark block in Mario Kart and it quickly cycles through items before it eventually lands on one.

It’s a slightly different vibe than what Apple has normally done in the past. We’re mostly used to cartoony piano music playing in the background while Jeff Daniels walks us through some of the cool features of a new iOS device, but this time around it’s a little more fast-paced, with a handful of neat apps being displayed.

We see quite a few apps actually, including GarageBand, iBooks, TED Talks, iMovie, Vimeo, iPhoto, and FaceTime. We’re also seeing both the iPad and iPad mini make appearances, letting users know that all of the 300,000 apps available for iPad, are compatible with both the full-size iPad and the smaller 7.9-inch iPad.

Destiny set for Xbox 720, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2014

If you’ve heard anything about the upcoming “game changer” title set to be produced by Bungie over the next 10 years in installments with Activision, you know that it certainly wouldn’t make sense for the whole series to be appearing on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In fact the first installment will be on those two consoles, but essentially everything afterward has been confirmed in legal documents to be hitting no less than the PlayStation 4, the Xbox 720, and the PC. The information that reveals said bits and pieces comes from a Call of Duty legal dispute where the contract between Activision and Bungie had to be unsealed.

destiny

The full document comes from The LA Times but the important section is right here. You’ll find “Destiny Game #2″ to be the subject of production on the PlayStation 4 and Personal Computer, while the Xbox 720, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 are being set for the Destiny Game #1 release. This means – it would seem – that the PlayStation 4 won’t be ready for action in time for the release of the first Destiny Game.

color

The folks at Bungie have been longtime Xbox developers having made one of the most successful gaming franchises in the history of the world with Halo, so it’s not out of the question that they’re simply going to hit the Xbox 720 first even if the PlayStation 4 will be out “in time” for one of the first Destiny installments. The fact that the first release is set for pre-order right this minute for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has us wondering, on the other hand, how this contract figures in with the PlayStation event occurring this week – could it be that no PlayStation 4 will be shown?

Have a peek at the Destiny trailer above and see how the PC and mobile platforms – like the iPhone, in this case – will very obviously be taking part in the overall structure of Destiny and its many tendrils. This game will not be limited to one platform, nor will it be dependent on one piece of hardware for you to be able to play it. This is the next generation in gaming made real – anywhere, anytime. We wouldn’t be surprised if this game were playable on NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD before all is said and done.
