Benjamin Netanyahu Says North Korea’s Nuke Test Is Lesson On Iran

JERUSALEM — Israel’s prime minister says North Korea’s recent nuclear test shows that “sanctions alone will not stop” Iran’s atomic program.

Benjamin Netanyahu told a gathering of international Jewish leaders on Monday that the Western sanctions against Tehran “have to be coupled with a robust, credible, military threat. If they are not, then there is no chance to stop them.”

LG invests $655 million to ramp up OLED production

We saw LG‘s newest OLED HDTV televisions at CES last month, and we were certainly impressed. However, the price tag wasn’t really in our range, and limited availability severely diminished the chances of even owning one in the first place, but LG Display has announced they’re investing $655 million to put the new televisions in mass production next year.

The company will implement a new 8th-generation OLED manufacturing line in South Korea that LG plans to start up in the first half of 2014, building 26,000 input sheets every month using LG’s WRGB OLED evaporation process. These sheets will be big enough to manufacturer 55-inch televisions.

It looks like LG Display is ramping up its efforts in order to compete with Samsung, which also recently launched a 55-inch OLED television set at CES last month, as well as curved displays alongside LG, with both companies referring to them as “the world’s first” curved OLED set, even though they debuted at the same time.

OLED televisions are said to have more vivid colors with deeper blacks and whiter whites, compared to existing liquid crystal display units. The new technology also allows manufacturers to make really thin TVs, and it may eventually make its way into laptops, where the OLED technology could save on battery life. LG’s investment will begin sometime during this first quarter.

Thump Through Your Day

Remember your first boombox? Did you have the one with the removable speakers? Maybe yours was skinny enough to carry on your shoulder. So when you walked to your friend’s house you could listen – and force others to listen – to your tunes the entire way. There were the dual cassette versions that were cool too. And oh boy, didn’t we all love the ability to record off the radio!  Whatever your style, having your own portable cassette player (boombox just sounds so much better) was da bomb back in the day.

Keep that boombox feel with a couple modern day meal must haves from Perpetual Kid. Start your morning right with the Boombox Mug, $11.49. Every time you tip your cup of joe the world will flashback to boombox days.  Leave it drying on its side to give a smile to all who pass by. Though I don’t think you will want to take this one breakdancing. When you are ready for food show off your Boombox Lunchbox, $13.99. This tin contraption will contain your vittles and illustrate your love of ghetto blasters. You can even walk into lunch or school with it on your shoulder to really work it. So stay cool and retro, with these boombox reminders and you will be the hippest person at the office.

We're liveblogging HTC's big event tomorrow at 10am ET!

We have some idea what HTC is planning to show us tomorrow, although we’re hoping to get all the juicy details (perhaps even confirm a name) at the company’s big reveal. So far, we’re expecting to see the very latest iteration of Sense, a Butterfly-mimicking 1080p display and probably some more imaging innovations, if HTC’s Twitter-based teasers are anything to go by. There are New York and London event planned and we’ve got teams attending both. It’s set to kick off at 10am ET and you should be able to see the appropriate geo-adjusted time in our magic bubble below. Bookmark our liveblog page and we hope to see you then.

Doppelganger Game Token with Dual Screens: LCD&D

There are hundreds of tabletop games, board games and card games, and with them come even more tokens and other game pieces, some of which you’ll almost surely lose over the years. This neat little invention by Rodney Benesh lets you replace your lost game tokens and personalize your gaming experience as well.

doppelganger universal tabletop game piece by rodney benesh

There’s nothing fancy about the Doppelganger. It’s just two one inch LCD screens positioned back to back and resting on a one sq.in. base. Connect the Doppelganger to a computer via USB to transfer up to 30 images; a button on the Doppelganger’s base lets you flip through the pictures. The current prototype’s battery lasts up to 4 hours, but Rodney hope to increase that to 8 hours in later models.

Pledge at least $20 (USD) on Kickstarter to reserve your own Doppelganger. The Doppelganger may be a simple device, but as the video above shows, its functionality is limited only by your imagination. I’m guessing people who love playing role-playing games won’t have a problem with that.

Meteorite fragments found in Russia up for sale

After last week’s meteor fly-by in Russia, many people have been searching for fragments of the rock that eventually made its way onto the Earth’s surface. A larger chunk of the meteor landed in a frozen lake, leaving a 20-foot wide hole. It’s said that many people have discovered meteorite fragments and are now selling them online for a few dollars.

Most of the fragments discovered have only been small rocks, between the size of a pebble and a golf ball, and Russian scientists say that the meteor was probably no more than two feet in diameter after it entered the Earth’s atmosphere, but they say that a large chunk of it is probably in the lake that it crashed into. However, divers have yet to find any large fragments on the bottom of the lake.

In the meantime, Russians are putting their discovered fragments up for sale online, with A two-centimeter fragment selling for 500 ruble, which is approximately $16.60. However, there’s no telling if the fragments for sale are authentic. Geologists say that unclassified fragments can sell for around $0.50/gram, while slightly rare fragments can cost as much as $50/gram. However, extremely rare fragments of lunar and Martian meteorites can sell for over $1,000/gram.

NASA estimates that when the meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere, it weighed about 10,000 tons and was approximately 55 feet in diameter. NASA says that a meteor that big only strikes the Earth about once every one hundred years. The shock wave that was produced by the meteor ended up injuring over 1,000 residents, and it’s estimated that damages are over $33 million.

Microsoft Job Postings Confirm "Windows Blue" and Yearly Updates From Here on Out

Windows 8 was a big step for Microsoft, and rumors have been swirling that its arrival is heralding more than just live-tile interfaces. A report from November indicated that Windows would move to a cheap, annual upgrade cycle called “Blue,” not unlike OS X. Now, job postings seem to confirm that yes, Blue exists, and under that name.
