Christopher Dorner Case: Dozens Of Pro-Dorner Protesters Rally Outside LAPD

LOS ANGELES — Dozens of protesters rallied outside Los Angeles police headquarters in support of Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer and suspected killer of four who died after a shootout and fire this week at a mountain cabin.

Protesters told the Los Angeles Times at the Saturday rally that they did not support Dorner’s deadly methods, but objected to police corruption and brutality, and believed Dorner’s claims of racism and unfair treatment by the department that he said led to the rampage.

Fireball makes its way across the sky in Northern California

It looks like Russia isn’t the only place getting some astronomical action. Within the same day that a meteor exploded over Russia and injured around 1200 people, folks over in Northern California spotted a ‘meteor’ zipping across the sky. The spectacle was caught on video by a couple of people driving in the San Francisco area. Not too long after the video was posted, many others took to social media to announce their sighting of the ‘meteor’ as well.

Northern California Meteor

But unfortunately, to rain on everyone’s parade, Mike Hankey, Operations Manager for the American Meteor Society at Pennsylvania State University, stated that what the Californian’s saw wasn’t a meteor, but rather just a fireball. He says, “Fireballs happen every single night, all around the world,” downplaying everyone’s enthusiasm. Hankey also states that the excitement from the Russian meteor that happened earlier had people more attentive to the things happening in the sky.

While it’s true that fireballs do occur every night, it’s still exciting to see the “shooting star” that we hear about in fantasies and children’s books. And while Hankey downplays the excitement of the Calfornia Fireball and labels it as commonplace, Jonathan Braidman, Hankey’s colleague, says,”This is a very common occurence. What is uncommon is that it’s so close to where people are living.”.

The people in California should be thankful that the fireball they witnessed wasn’t as dangerous as the meteor in Russia. The meteor, which injured 1200 people, also shattered windows from 4,000 buildings. Mikhail Yurevich, governor of Chelyabinsk, says that the damage amounted to the power of 20 atomic bombs, and also caused about $33 million worth of damage. So California, it looks like you dodge a bullet there.

Verizon FiOS, ViaSat Exede lead FCC broadband performance report

How do you pick your broadband internet provider? For many of us, the market dictates our selection, but a few lucky subscribers get to make their own call, rather than opting for the one and only service available in a particular locale. FiOS, Verizon’s fiber-optic solution, and Exede, ViaSat’s high-bandwidth satellite service — two common secondary offerings — happen to be the two frontrunners in the FCC’s latest broadband performance report, which rates companies based on actual download and upload speeds compared to advertised bandwidth, among other metrics. More often than not, providers fall short of promised performance, with companies like AT&T and Qwest leading the naughty list. But Verizon and ViaSat are both motivated to maintain subscribers, and exceeding expectations is certainly not a bad way to accomplish that.

This is ViaSat’s first appearance in such a report, due in no small part to the company’s recent Exede broadband introduction, which followed the ViaSat-1 satellite launch in late 2011. We experienced speedy performance during our own test last year, though latency remained an issue. The FCC covers this major downside as well, reporting a measured latency of 638 ms, compared to an average 29.6 ms figure for terrestrial services — but overall impressions seem quite positive. The FCC has published some 10,000 words on the topic, so if you do in fact have an opportunity to elect your own broadband provider, it might be worth your while to comb through the agency’s full report. It’s ready for your perusal over at the source link below.

Iceland wants to block online adult content

The thought of having online X-Rated material blocked in your country may be a nightmare for many of you, so be thankful that you’re not living in Iceland right now. A proposed bill by Iceland’s Minister of Interior, Ögmundur Jónasson, states that all online X-Rated material should be banned. This is quite similar to South Korea, who itself is in the process of blocking out online adult content. The main argument proposed by the Icelandic government is that children that view online adult content are “at risk”.

Iceland government wants to ban online adult content

The Icelandic government launched a wide consultation process on X-Rated material. The investigation showed that children at an early age who are exposed to adult content showed similar signs to victims who have been traumatized by actual sexual abuse. The government concluded that the violent nature of adult content, and it’s easy-accessibility thanks to the internet, led to an increased amount of sexual assaults. Halla Gunnarsdóttir, political adviser to Ögmundur Jónasson, stated “This move is not anti-sex. It is anti-violence because young children are seeing adult content and acting it out”.

There are several ways that Iceland can follow through with its ban on online adult content. It is considering banning all IP addresses used by X-Rated sites, and also making it illegal to use credit cards to purchase the content through websites. It could also have active volunteers, like the 800+ in South Korea, who seek out these sites and submit them to the government to be banned.

While it’s admirable that Iceland wants to ban online adult content to protect the children, its chances of doing so are very slim. According to Birgitta Jónsdóttir, a member of the parliamentary committee in Iceland tasked to discuss the proposal, the possibility of the bill being passed is “near zero”, but they’re looking into alternate ways to protect children from online adult content. They’ve proposed filtering software and programs to educate children and parents about the dangers of adult content. We’ll wait to see what happens. Iceland has already banned the printing and distribution of X-Rated material, as well as strip clubs.

BMW recalls over half a million cars over battery cable connector

BMW has recalled almost 570,000 cars due to an issue with one of the battery cable connectors, which is prone to failure and could result in a perma-stalled vehicle. The failure results from gradual degradation, which is why the earliest vehicle models being recalled go back to 2007. You can check out which models and years are included on the list after the jump.

Also affected by the problem is one terminal in the fuse box, which can also degrade and fail. When this happens, the connection between the battery located in the car’s trunk will no longer be connected to the fuse box, causing the engine to suddenly stall. According to the manufacturer, the problem has resulted in one small crash in Canada, but no one was hurt.

The 3-Series, 1-Series, and the Z4 have been recalled. In the 3-Series, coupes, wagons, and convertibles from 2007 to 2011 are affected, while the 1-Series cars span 2008 to 2012. The sleek Z4 sportscar, meanwhile, has affected years from 2009 to 2011. The United States is home to most of the affected vehicles at 504,000, while Canada has the rest at 65,000.

Drivers who have one of the affected models will receive a notification from BMW starting next month. When notified, the driver can take their vehicle to the nearest dealer, where the battery cable connector will be replaced for free. Those who have questions about the issue can contact BMW at 800-525-7417.
