Thousands Support Tunisia’s Islamist Party In Rally, Democracy, Non-Violence Hailed

TUNIS, Tunisia — Thousands of supporters of the ruling Islamist party, waving banners and chanting, marched Saturday in the capital in response to rising criticism about Tunisia’s direction two years after its revolution.

Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has run afoul of his own governing party, Ennadha, by announcing he would seek to form a Cabinet of technocrats after leftist opposition politician Chokri Belaid was shot dead outside his home on Feb. 6 – setting off anti-government riots around the country. Saturday’s demonstration was a show of support for the party in the face of Jebali’s initiative.

Researchers testing frugal autonomous car system, aim for $150 price tag (video)

Researchers testing frugal autonomous car system, aim for $150 price tag (video)

Google certainly has pockets deep enough to trick out self-driving cars with any kind of pricey gear, but researchers at the University of Oxford have begun testing a solution that aims to keep things affordable. Currently, the system leverages an array of low-profile stereo cameras and lasers that rings up at about £5,000 (approximately $7,750), but the next goal is to knock the price down to £500, and eventually to a cool £100 (roughly $150). “Really, we do need to solve the engineering challenges of not relying on expensive sensors, but relying on cheap sensors,” Professor Paul Newman told the Telegraph. “But doing some really smart things with those cheap sensor feeds.”

Rather than a vehicle that acts as a chauffeur at all times, Newman’s vision for the modified Nissan Leaf, dubbed RobotCar, is for it to take control on select occasions. While drivers go about their commute, the system composes a 3D map of the car’s environs and commits it to memory. When the auto identifies a familiar setting and feels confident about its ability to take the reigns, it could let the driver know it’s ready to assume control. Right now, the automobile’s been tested on private roads, but the team behind it is working with the UK’s Department of Transportation to roll it onto public streets. Head past the jump for a glimpse of RobotCar in action.

AquaLung Dreamlab Oceanwings: For Flying Underwater

I’ve seen wingsuits used in basejumping and skydiving, but I guess it makes sense to use something akin to those suits underwater, since some animals like ray fish use their “wings” to fly underwater.

The Oceanwings neoprene suit from AquaLung Dreamlab is supposed to help humans in their subaquatic activities. The suit was created by French designer Guillaume Binard and Frédérique Gouin. It looks like the suit lets you sort of “fly” through the water without much energy expense, though it will probably take some time to get used to the way that it makes the water flow around your body.

You can see the suit in action in this underwater video directed by Jérôme Espla, featuring Pierre Frolla as he dives into the abyss.

Mark Kamins Dead: DJ-Producer Who Dated And Discovered Madonna Dies At 57

DJ and producer Mark Kamins, who discovered Madonna before she signed a record deal, has died. He was 57.

A source close to Kamins confirmed his death to Billboard. According to reports, he suffered a “massive coronary” in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he has been teaching. Kamins had allegedly been struggling with heart problems for the past few months.

Kamins took Madonna under his wing in 1982, passing her demo on to Sire Records executive Seymour Stein, who quickly signed her. The rest, of course, is now pop music history. Kamins, who also produced her single “Everybody,” was also the first in a line of high-profile Madonna romances.

Google Takeout now offers more support for Blogger and Google+

Google Takeout now offers more support for those of you with a Blogger account and/or a Google+ page. Now through the Google Takeout service, you can export information contained inside of your Blogger account as well as information in your Google+ Stream or Google+ Circles. The Takeout feature is provided by The Data Liberation Front, a Google engineering team in charge of making it easier for users to move their data in and out of Google products.

Google Takeout now offers more support for Blogger and Google+

For those of you who don’t know, the Google Takeout service is an impressive service that lets you export data contained in your Google accounts. You can export data from Google+,Google+ pages, Blogger, Buzz, Contacts, Drive, Latitude, Pages, Picasa, Reader, Voice, and YouTube.

Google Takeout previously offered its services for your personal Google+ account, but now if you have a Google+ page set-up for your business, or websites, you can export the data from those as well. The new Blogger support allows you to export data from your entire Blogger account, or you can choose to export only a single page or blog. The data will be exported as an Atom XML file. Your Google+ pages will be exported as HTML files containing your posts and JSON files containing the circles on your page.

The Google Takeout service is like taking a trip down memory lane. Viewing files and data from the entirety of your Google accounts is very nostalgic. Looking back to your very first posts can be mind-blowing, seeing how far you’ve come and how far you’ve changed over time. I’d highly recommend you try it out.
