While schools do teach computer skills as part of their classes, depending on the curriculum it will vary from basic use of productivity suites such as Microsoft Office, to slightly more rudimentary programming language, but that’s only if you have taken computer classes as one of your class choices. I remember back in the day when I chose computer classes as one of my picks back in high school, and we were taught Microsoft’s Visual Basic. However it was only because I chose the class that we were taught programming, but with the rapid advancement of technology these days, wouldn’t it be a good idea if all kids were required to learn some form of programming language?
US President Barack Obama seems to think it’s a great idea in his recent Google+ Hangout where he answered the question as to whether he thought the idea of kids learning basic programming language in schools should be made a requirement. “I think it makes sense, I really do … I want to make sure that (young people) know how to produce stuff using computers and not just consume stuff.” He then went on to state that by giving students an education in these matters at a relatively young age, they can build up their foundation and pursue a career without having to spend money and time on a four-year degree in college. Sounds like a great idea! What do you guys think? Would you like your kids to be required to learn basic programming language as part of their high school curriculum?

It’s never good when you have to make an official report to the public about a hacker attack your multi-billion dollar social network has had. That’s what’s happened this week as Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan lets it be known that several engineers on staff with Facebook had been the subject of a zero-day Java exploit. The good news is that no customer data was exposed (that’s your stuff), the bad news is that Facebook wasn’t the only company targeted by this attack.
According to Sullivan, this attack worked as a “watering hole”, using an unnamed “popular mobile developer Web forum” as a trap for unsuspecting visitors. When the first user on Facebook’s engineering team visited the site, that engineer tripped a wire, so to speak, that let the zero-day Java exploit begin to take hold of machines at Facebook. The attack here is related back to a Java exploit documented by Oracle earlier this month.
Similar attacks have been popping up recently in several places, one of them relating to Twitter’s recent incident in which 250,000 account passwords were stolen. Another related event occurred with Mozilla as they made Java instances blocked by default – can’t be too careful!
With the Facebook situation it would appear that even the patch from Oracle wouldn’t have helped the engineers as Sullivan notes that this attack was “injected into the site’s HTML.” In this case any user visiting the site with Java enabled would have been infected, bar none. This situation did allow the hackers to gain access to some “corporate data, email, and come software code.” How much and how serious this breach really was is not being made entirely clear.
What is being made clear by Sullivan is that Facebook’s engineers are attempting to reduce the amount of products they use that are dependent on Java. Of course that’s not the end of the story as the hacking attack community rolls on – a cat and mouse game ensues for all time. Check the timeline below for more Java-related history to see how one bit of software history may be on its way out.

Good news Blackberry Z10 owners, if you’re hoping to update your phone to the latest version of Blackberry 10, the folks at Crackberry have reported that the version of OS 10.0.10.261 has been leaked, so for those of you familiar with sideloading these leaked updates, you can go ahead and download it from the Crackberry forums. Personally I am not too sure how to go about doing that, so it’s best that you should do your homework before going ahead with it. The update is “official”, but it has not been officially released to the masses, so we’re not too sure what exactly has been changed. However according to N4BB, this is the same OS that they are currently running on the Dev Alpha B device, and supposedly there are even more browser improvements, making its performance even better than what it used to be. We expect that there are probably a couple of bug fixes thrown in there as well, but we guess we will have to wait for the official change notes in order to get a clearer picture.

According to an “extremely reliable source” from 9to5 Google, they claim that Google will be launching their own retail stores across metropolitan areas in the United States ahead of the holidays this year. Unsurprisingly the source claims that these stores will be used to show off Google’s own brand of products, such as the Nexus lineup of Android smartphones and tablets, as well as Chromebooks running Google’s Chrome OS. Google has yet to comment on these rumors, but considering that they already have their own online store, we wouldn’t be surprised if they decided that going brick-and-mortar would be the next thing to do. At the moment as far as Android stores are concerned, customers looking to explore Android devices will have to visit their local phone retailers or carriers, although in some cases, Android-dedicated stores have been opened where only Android devices are put on display. Either way we’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think about the idea of Google opening their own retail store?

Unless there’s any more last-minute tweaks, those fussy perfectionists at Belkin are ready to lift the cloche on the Thunderbolt Express dock. We’d originally seen the unit at last year’s CES, but the company postponed the launch after adding a trio of USB 3.0 ports and eSATA to the hardware. If you didn’t give up and shell out for the Matrox DS1 in the meantime, you can pre-order the Thunderbolt Express today for shipping next week.
Update: eSATA, which was added to the roster last summer, was ultimately dropped from the final production version.

After professing his admiration for a woman’s “physiology” on the sexually infused track, “If You’re Ready To Learn,” Brian McKnight is ready to shift back to his conventional sound with the release of, “More Than Words.”
Tentatively set to hit stores on April 2, McKnight’s eOne Music release features 16 tracks and marks his first new album in two years. During a recent interview with the Huffington Post, the “Anytime” crooner shared details on the project, in addition to his thoughts on possible repercussions stemming from the controversial adult track.
Last year you admitted that you had no desire to release another album ever again. What changed your mind?
Arizona fourth grader Kyera McCloskey got an accidental lesson in infidelity earlier this week.
According to ABC15, McCloskey and her fellow students at the Playa Del Rey Elementary School in Gilbert, Ariz. were given a very grown-up homework assignment on Monday. The students were prompted to read about various situations, describe what was happening in them and then offer a response or solution. One such “situation” was about a woman finding a hair clip underneath her bed with another woman’s hair in it.

It’s not exactly like The Hart + The Hunter chef-owners Brian Dunsmoor + Kris Tominaga were tentative out of the gate. Hell, their opening dinner menu at West Hollywood’s Palihotel included a dish of hanger steak and snails. Still, each month brings new dishes, and even though the talented duo dialed back weekday breakfast, deferring to eggslut, they’ve ramped up Sunday brunch, allowing them to expand on their Cal-Southern repertoire.

CHICAGO — President Barack Obama is portraying his State of the Union proposals as elements of a concerted effort to build “ladders of opportunity” into the middle class.
In remarks Friday at Hyde Park Academy in his hometown of Chicago, Obama says by reducing gun violence, expanding preschool access, raising the minimum wage and improving job training, the U.S. can ensure every child has a chance to succeed.
