Coronavirus: SARS-Like Virus Hits 12 Globally With New British Case

By Kate Kelland

LONDON, Feb 15 (Reuters) – A fourth person in Britain has contracted a potentially fatal SARS-like virus which was unknown in humans until a few months ago, but health officials said on Friday the risk to the population remained very low.

Confirming the third British case this week of infection the new virus – known as novel coronavirus, or NCoV – the Health Protection Agency said the patient was one of a cluster of three in the same family.

This latest case brings the total number of confirmed cases globally to 12, of which four have been diagnosed in Britain, the HPA said. Of the total, five have died. Most of the infected lived or had recently been in the Middle East.

NCoV was identified when the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued an international alert in September 2012 saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man in Britain who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.

The virus belongs to the same family as SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – a coronavirus that emerged in China in 2002 and killed about a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide. Symptoms common to both viruses include severe respiratory illness, fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

The HPA, which earlier this week said the other two patients from the same family were being treated in intensive care units in separate hospitals in northern and central England, said the third case in the cluster was mild.

“The patient … is recovering from a mild respiratory illness and is currently well,” it said in a statement.

John Watson, the HPA’s head of respiratory diseases said that despite this, the HPA was advising the patient to self-isolate and limit contact with other people. Health officials are currently following up other household members.

Coronaviruses are typically spread like other respiratory infections such as flu, travelling in airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

“We would like to emphasise that the risk associated with novel coronavirus to the general UK population remains very low,” Watson said.

When a second case in this cluster was found on Wednesday, Tom Wilkinson, a senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at Britain’s University of Southampton, said that if NCoV turned out to be like the previous SARS outbreak, it may prove quite slow to spread from one human to another.

“But it’s early days to make any definite statements because viruses can change and mutate very rapidly, so what is right today may be wrong tomorrow,” he said.

Among the 12 laboratory-confirmed cases of NCoV to date, five are in Saudi Arabia, with three deaths; two are in Jordan, where both patients died; four are in Britain, where three are receiving treatment and the latest one is described as well; and one was in Germany in a patient from Qatar who has since been discharged from medical care. Carnival Cruise Tells Passengers They Can Keep The Bathrobes In Total PR Fiasco

They may have been stranded aboard a busted cruise ship for five days with little food, broken sewage systems and no heat or air conditioning, but at least they’ll get to keep the bathrobe.

On Friday morning, as more than 3,000 tired and dirty customers finally disembarked from the stranded cruise ship Triumph, @CarnivalCruise tweeted, “Of course the bathrobes for the Carnival Triumph are complimentary.”

It was a remarkably tone-deaf finish to a week-long public relations fiasco that began Sunday night when an engine fire crippled the Caribbean-bound ship and set it adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. Nonstop news coverage and social media chatter brought the public vivid images of the fetid conditions aboard the Triumph. Reports from passengers included details about overflowing toilets, hours-long waits to get food and flooded rooms during the five days they were stranded at sea.

HTC One leaks in black with carrier pricing

This week the HTC One has leaked once again, this time in a lovely black iteration complete with price points on three of the top four major carriers in the United States. This bodes well for the manufacturer as their launch with the HTC One X and HTC One S from a bit less than a year ago ended up not doing as well as they’d expected, largely due to carrier exclusives – rather than the wide release we’re seeing here, that is. Will this be HTC’s return to prominence with a single smartphone to rule them all?

With the HTC One it would appear that we’re going to see two different colors right out of the gate, including the white/silver version we saw earlier this week and the black we’re seeing today. This black version has been leaked courtesy of Unwired View’s @evleaks, the same source as the white/silver version. One point you really should be noting here is that this device works with a wholly unique two-button setup – not seen on any Android smartphone in the past.

This device is being tipped as coming to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all at once, each of them coming together some time in early March. Verizon has been tipped to be getting this device in a slightly different configuration on the 22nd of March as well, perhaps as a refresh of the DROID DNA. The release price for the HTC One has been tipped as $199 USD for a 32GB internal storage version and $299 USD for a 64GB version, both versions being priced the same on each of the three carriers besides Verizon.

The specifications for this device remain quite standard through the leaked ranks, those being a 4.7-inch full HD display with a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor under the hood. This device is also tipped to be coming with enhanced photography, videography, and audio support as well. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information as we head to the big HTC event next week in NYC – we’ll be there with bells on!

‘To A Future Woman In Tech’: Stacey Mulcahy’s Powerful Letter To Her Niece

Flash maven Stacey Mulcahy recently wrote an open letter to her 8-year-old niece, recounting the difficulties, both subtle and overt, that many women working in technology face.

Some of Mulcahy’s sentiments are lighthearted: “I hope that you attend conferences and find yourself complaining about long lines for the bathroom.” Others are straightforward about the many challenges that come with being a woman in tech: “I hope that you will speak about your expertise. And when you do, people won’t use some form of social media to point out your body issues. The only body on display, is your body of work.”

Read the letter here.

Wii U January Sales Predicted At Nearly 55,000 Units

Wii U January Sales Predicted At Nearly 55,000 Units

During the Nintendo Wii U’s launch week in the U.S., Nintendo announced it sold 400,000 units of its next-generation console, but it looks like in post-holiday sales it hasn’t been keeping up with its launch-week momentum as a new report is showing the Wii U isn’t selling so great these days.

This past January, the Wii U only sold only 57,000 units in the U.S. Those sales numbers aren’t coming from Nintendo, as we’re sure they’d be embarrassed to report that number, instead, they’re coming from an unnamed source who is said to have access to numbers from the NPD Group. Just to compare, the Wii sold 435,000 units in its first post-holiday month. (more…)

Joy Stewart, Homeless Florida Grandmother, Receives Home For Valentine’s Day (VIDEO)

NORTH LAUDERDALE — If one could paint a picture of dedication and determination, it would look a lot like Joy Stewart.

“She’s more of a man than most of the men I know,” son Michael Johnson, 24, said. “That’s a superwoman.”

Superwoman and her super grandchildren were handed the keys to a newly renovated home on Valentine’s Day thanks to a group of volunteers who were shocked into action when they learned of her misfortune.

Store Your Feet in These USB Flash Drive Slippers

We’ve seen diminutive USB sticks with huge capacities, but these slippers by Etsy artist Unique P Crochet can only carry 1 foot each, despite being comically large. Although frankly I’m not sure how many gigabytes are in one foot.

Rethinking the flagship: The case for Nokia’s Lumia 620

DNP Is this the phone that could rescue Nokia

It’s easy to dismiss the Lumia 620 as yet another cheaply-priced smartphone, but that isn’t the case. In fact, Nokia’s latest release made me completely rethink Windows Phone. Sure, the mobile OS lacks the app selection of its rivals, but maybe I didn’t need them to begin with. Maybe I didn’t need the same processor found in rival Android devices to run an OS that’s generally much lighter and more direct. Perhaps Nokia thought the same thing, because in reading over the Lumia 620’s spec sheet, there’s a lot of decidedly low-to-middleweight hardware. But it’s hundreds of dollars less than the Lumia 920 and once I got my hands on it, I realized this was the Windows Phone I had been waiting for.

Nokia needs a success. So does Microsoft — it’s been three years to the day since Windows Phone 7 was first announced

Nokia needs a success. So does Microsoft — it’s been three years to the day since Windows Phone 7 was first announced. Since then, we’ve seen Nokia transplant its ill-fated N9 into the stylish Lumia 800; then the bigger (and not as slick) Lumia 900 tried to crack America. On the sidelines, second-string Lumias like the 710 or the 610 arrived to antipathy. They lacked the design punch, build quality (and colors!) of the high-end iterations. Then late in 2012, Windows Phone 8 arrived and the pocket-straining Lumia 920 was unfortunately pitted against the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5. An operating system that still had to prove itself was now going up against Android’s and iOS’ strongest players and on a two-year contract, to boot! That’s a deep bet to make on a fledgling, niche OS. The Lumia 920 attempted to play on its strengths (like admittedly superb low-light photos and an enhanced touchscreen) to warrant the premium, but it doesn’t quite hit home for me. Dropping any price-tag pretension, it’s the Lumia 620 that is Nokia’s most compelling Windows Phone to date.
