House Science Committee Plans Asteroid Hearing

The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology announced Friday that it will hold a hearing in the coming weeks over asteroids that pose a “potential threat to Earth” after a meteor exploded over Russia and an asteroid passed close to Earth.

“Today’s events are a stark reminder of the need to invest in space science. Asteroid 2012 DA14 passed just 17,000 miles from Earth, less than the distance of a round trip from New York to Sydney. And this morning, a much smaller meteorite hit near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, destroying buildings and injuring hundreds,” said Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) in a press release.

“Developing technology and research that enable us to track objects like Asteroid 2012 DA14 is critical to our future. We should continue to invest in systems that identify threatening asteroids and develop contingencies, if needed, to change the course of an asteroid headed toward Earth.”

Robbie Rogers Gay: U.S. Soccer Player Comes Out, ‘Steps Away’ From Sport

In a poignant post entitled “The Next Chapter…” on his personal website, U.S. soccer player Robbie Rogers has come out as gay and also stepped away from professional soccer.

The 25-year-old midfielder from California played in 18 games for the U.S. men’s national team and starred for the Columbus Crew before leaving the MLS for Europe.

Although he described his playing career as giving him “more joy than I could have ever imagined,” the pain in Rogers’ writing is palpable at times.

Rep. Rayne Brown, North Carolina State Republican, Introduces Bill Criminalizing Nipple Exposure

North Carolina state representatives have introduced a bill that would “clarify” state law to specifically prohibit the baring of women’s breasts. Women worried about showing too much of their “private area” should use pasties, or perhaps duct tape.

The proposed legislation, House Bill 34, would make it a Class H felony to expose “external organs of sex and of excretion, including the nipple, or any portion of the areola, of the human female breast.”

Rep. Rayne Brown (R), who co-sponsored the bill, said that while it may seem frivolous and even funny, “there are communities across this state, there’s local governments across this state, and also local law enforcement for whom this issue is really not a laughing matter,” according to WRAL in Raleigh, N.C.

Six High-Altitude Vacations To Take While You Can

To celebrate her 50th birthday and the publication of her book, 1,000 Places To See Before You Die (Workman Publishing) 10 years ago, Patricia Schultz visited Machu Picchu. The 15th century “Lost City of the Incas” in the heart of the Urubamba valley in southern Peru, was recently voted one of the new seven wonders of the world. It’s a physically taxing journey to see it, though, partly because of the location at an altitude of nearly 8,000 feet, and also because to visit properly you need to scramble around an archaeological site. As her milestone birthday approached, Schultz decided it was better “to see it sooner, rather than later.”

Apple job listing hints at “next generation features” for Apple TV

Apple TV rumors have slowly been gaining steam recently, and even more speculation should be wound up from the fact that Apple has a job listing that looks to find an “experienced engineering manager to help deliver the next generation features for Apple TV.” While it makes sense that Apple will update the Apple TV set top box at some point, “next generation features” sort of hints at the possibility that Apple may change things up a bit.

While the listing doesn’t offer any specific information about Apple’s plans for the Apple TV, it looks like the Cupertino-based company is bumping up the number of people working on the Apple TV. This wouldn’t be too surprising, considering that the Apple TV is an area of “intense interest” for Apple.

There’s also a rumored event planned for March where Apple is said to be unveiling some new details on the Apple TV, specifically a new SDK that would allow app developers to make apps for the platform, something that Apple may be doing to prepare for an actual television set launch sometime later this year possibly.

As far as what these “next generation features” will consist of, it’s hard to tell at this point, but it’s even possible that Apple may aim for the gaming consoles, and could possibly introduce some new advanced features for the Apple TV that would see it take on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 head on in a battle in the living room.

Creepiest Commercial Ever? Ad For Czech Dating Site Lidé Is Hilariously Disturbing (VIDEO)

Well, that was sufficiently creepy.

That isn’t a short horror film or, as Buzzfeed describes, a “suicide PSA” above. It’s actually a a commercial for Lidé, an online dating site in the Czech Republic. In it, a sex doll apparently “kills” herself after her lover (?) starts looking for love on the web, a plot that honestly wouldn’t surprise us if it were made into an American movie. Come on, “Lars And The Real Girl” Part Two?

For Chicago couple Irv and Carlyn Ungar, Valentine’s Day is more than just a lovey-dovey holiday. February 14 marks their wedding anniversary, and this year the pair celebrated the big 7-5.

But the decision to get married on Valentine’s Day was more practical than romantic, Irv, 99, admitted in an interview with CBS.

“I thought, you know, I might have trouble remembering the date,” he said. “But there will always be a Valentine’s Day!”

SEEN AND HEARD: ‘NYC 1993’ At The New Museum, From The Mouths Of Gallery Patrons (PHOTOS)

Our new series, “Seen and Heard,” introduces the best quotes and snapshots from the past week’s art exhibits. From hilariously ignorant to downright eloquent, we’re on the lookout for the best gallery-goer commentary we can find. (Hint: Submissions are welcome!)

Did you make it to the opening of the New Museum‘s ultra-hip exhibit, “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star” this week? The crowded event was essentially a time capsule chock full of art relics from exactly 20 years ago, but what a year! Cindy Sherman‘s portraits, Matthew Barney‘s video art, and Felix Gonzales-Torres‘ ceiling-to-floor installation decorated the multi-level show, standing out as “downtown” eye candy for all who came to see (which included the likes of Jeffrey Deitch, Andres Serrano and “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgård).

LG touts 15 million Optimus L Series phones sold like so many refrigerators

LG touts 15 million Optimus LSeries phones sold like so many washing machines

As stylish as it can be, LG’s Optimus L Series is very appliance-like, the smartphone line that gets the job done versus the more luxuriant Optimus G. It’s almost no surprise, then, that LG’s sales rate has accelerated to the volume we’d expect from an air conditioner or fridge: just two months after the L Series hit 10 million in sales since launch, it’s already at 15 million. That’s no doubt heartening to LG, especially with the L Series II right around the corner. We doubt Samsung will break into cold sweats, though. When the Galaxy S III alone moved twice as many units by November of last year, LG still has some catching up to do in 2013.
